  1. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com I did this contest reminder filler for this week for two reasons. First, it's been a busy and exhausting week at home after work, plus I was having some technical difficulties the other day that kept me from working on the comic as long as I was hoping, so I decided to throw out something a bit shorter. Second, I really want to remind people about this contest. There's little I would like more than fan art for my birthday. It doesn't cost you a cent to send me this present; just the time it takes to make a drawing, a sketch, or even a quick game avatar. And EVERYONE will get a sketch from me in return, or even one of the grand prizes! So check the full rules on my main page and send in your submissions!

Comic 4/29/17 - "You" Times Two, "Eep" Times Three(p) TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Just to be clear, I'm counting last week's strip, so Dino-Mo has dramatically shouted "YOU!" twice in a row, eliciting an "Eep" from Enticia, Dodge, and Sugar Rush, hence the title. I'm still working on the next storyline, but I'm hoping that I can keep the number of characters small. These big group shots are a pain in the tuchus, especially when working with a limited number of frames. Granted, this is a webcomic; I could always add more frames. But I would like to print these out in an actual comic, and so in more recent years, I've been doing my best to keep the format consistent. I really like Dino-Mo's speech bubble in the last frame. While this is a bit of deja vu from the previous comic, Dino-Mo is getting angrier and angrier, so her firey speech balloon from the last strip is now burnt and crispy.   3. theheroesofcrash.com Jackknife has yet to learn his lesson about following people. Although perhaps I shouldn't say "yet", as that suggests that someday he WILL learn his lesson... The hardest part about drawing today's strip was drawing Dino-Mo in that first panel. It was an awkward pose and it needed quite a bit of editing, particularly around her arm. It's surprising how tricky it can be to draw people from behind; there's fewer features to draw, but we're pretty used to visualizing people from the front, so all the angles are different. I definitely had fun with word balloons in this strip, particularly in panels 1 and 3. It's funny how simple things like that can give so much character to... well, characters!
  4. theheroesofcrash.com Awkward moment alert! Dino-Mo's typically fairly laid back, but if you threaten her teammates, you're pushing her buttons, and she's a bit more likely to hold a grudge. Enticia's already on her bad side, and it looks like Belt Boy's getting there, too! The first panel is a bit of a callback to the 7/3/07 strip, in which Cannon falls out of the school upon leaving the front doors. I know it's not practical for a school to float in the air, but I still like the effect, and it seems that any superhero should be able to reach a door a mere twelve feet in the air. Getting down, apparently, is harder... unless you have wings, or the strength to pull of a "superhero landing". Hey, just reminding you that there's still a month left in my contest, and EVERYONE who enters gets a prize! Just in case you forgot...

  5. Comic 4/8/17 - Necros Returns!

    theheroesofcrash.com We return to the canonical comics after last week's filler, and we now see who has Belt Boy so worried - none other than his dreaded arch-nemesis, Necros! I colored the first panel lime green because if Disney (and Tumblr) has taught me anything, it's that lime green is the color of evil. Ursula's voice-stealing magic, Scar's steam columns at the beginning of Be Prepared, Maleficent's dragon flames and glowing spinning wheel... all lime green. And there's more lime green-colored villainy in those movies. Try googling "Disney villains lime green" and see what you come up with! While Necros does have a nose beneath that mask (He may be evil, but he's not rocking the Voldemort look), I thought that it kinda ruined the skull effect of his mask to show the shape of his nose when drawing him from a side view in my simplistic cartoon style. Consider his mysterious noselessness a style choice. It seems rather apt that this is the six-hundred and sixty-sixth canonical comic, and we're witnessing the return of the strip's nastiest villain so far, especially when his nightmarish shadow looks so demonic. I assure you that the shadow is merely a reflection of Belt Boy's fear in his head, and that Necros isn't actually casting a demonic shadow. But even if that shadow is nothing more than a visual metaphor, Necros himself is an imposing figure in person, and Belt Boy knows full well that his bite is even worse than his bark.
  6. theheroesofcrash.com One of my favorite website traditions is the annual April Fools' Day filler. I'm not big on practical jokes, myself... but Cannon sure is, which is why he pranks a character from someone else's webcomic every year! This year's target is the Happy Homemaker - a supervillainess bent on taking away her fellow woman's choice to have a career. Her arch-nemesis is the feminist superheroine Gyno-Star, who appears in the last panel. If you want to read a feminist webcomic whose wit and flawed heroes are reminiscent of one of the GOOD seasons of The Simpsons, then check out The Adventures of Gyno-Star via my Links page! Many thanks to the talented Rebecca Cohen for letting me borrow her characters! Last year, I had considered having Cannon play a prank on Gyno-Star, but I couldn't think of a practical joke that was clever enough. I like to make Cannon's pranks take advantage of the target's attributes, or at least be poetic in some way. While Gyno-Star does have a few character flaws (she can be a bit vain or self-absorbed at times), I didn't feel like Cannon's pranks could take full advantage of that, and I felt that it wouldn't be right for Cannon to play a prank that mocked Gyno-Star's feminist ideals (That's the sort of thing that Gyno-Star's villains would do). This year, I considered Gyno-Star again, but then I thought it would be fun for him to prank one of Gyno-Star's villains, and playing this joke on the Happy Homemaker just sprang to mind. I have to be honest, Happy Homemaker looks kinda like an evil version of my own mom in that first panel. But I suppose that she is, essentially, an evil mom, having unsuccessfully attempted to rebrand herself as "The Stay-At-Home-Mom". I had fun drawing her retro 1950s look, which seems to work well with my drawing style (Which was partially inspired by retro-style cartoons). Sharp-eyed viewers might notice that one picture frame reads "Lair Sweet Lair" (although it's partly obscured by a text balloon). I liked that gag, as well as "Out Darn Spot" (If that's not the name of a cleaning product, it should be!). Drawing this comic was a lot of fun, which probably made it easier to stay focused and complete it in record time (I submitted it to Rebecca Cohen for approval before posting it). I consider it an honor that she liked the concept when I first proposed it, and an even greater honor that she liked the finished product! :-D I do like making fan art, but if you want to let me know how much you like MY characters, don't forget that I still have my annual Fan Art Contest going on! But a villain of this caliber deserves a dramatic introduction. I'm proudest of that panel in the lower left. I like BB's punched expression and the blurry fist. Just altogether a good, toony image.   8. theheroesofcrash.com Looks like Miss Sunflower was getting cocky this time! Belt Boy has more than a few rope tricks up his sleeve - er, belt! Pretty happy with how this comic turned out, particularly that last panel. Logically, Miss Sunflower should probably be facing the other direction if she's been lifted over BB's head in a direct arc with no twists, but I decided to go with aesthetics over realism. I'd rather look at her cartoonish expression than the back of her head. By the way, folks, there are just TWO MONTHS left in my annual fan art contest, and I want to remind you that I'll award surprise sketches to ANYONE who enters!   9. Comic 3/11/17 - Split Second Timing

    theheroesofcrash.com Uh-oh... seems Miss Sunflower has gotten the upper hand! How's Belt Boy going to make it out of THIS one? Gonna break this commentary down panel-by-panel. In the first shot, I wanted to make sure that I didn't draw Belt Boy dodging her blasts in any of the same poses he used when dodging her blasts in their first battle. I should probably practice realistic lighting, but in the meantime I just went with my gut on how to shade Sunflower's metal parts to get something that looked aesthetically good and fitting with my cartoonish style. Panel 2 is Belt Boy looking uncharacteristically smug. Like I said, Cannon's rubbed off on him a bit. Panel 3: fun with sound effect lettering! I like the shapes of the letters I came up with; they look a bit stretched and toony. Belt Boy's clearly seeing stars... and comets and a planet! The little "burst effect" in the background was added last minute to give it more pizazz; I used a gradient effect and a blurring eraser, and I'm pretty happy with that. Panel 4: Loving BB's cartoonish KO pose here. The background was a bit tricky to do, but I like how it looks, especially the driveway with a sloped sidewalk and arrows. The sign is actually a pair of subtle pop culture references; 2nd Time Around was the name of the antique store owned by April O'Neil's family in some Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles universes, and the unbroken clock is set to four of two - the title of a They Might Be Giants song is "Four of Two" (And its lyrics suggest that it may be a good song for BB to fall unconscious to...!).   10. theheroesofcrash.com With an evil, witch-like villainess bursting out of a trash can she'd been trapped in, I couldn't resist making a Power Rangers reference. Tee hee! Belt Boy doesn't have Cannon's natural sarcastic wit, but after years of having Cannon as a friend and seeing witty hero reparte in comics/cartoons/movies, he's able to make some decent quips against evildoers. Granted, a lot of them are puns, but he takes pride in them. I colored the trash can in the second panel with the grays and blues it's supposed to have, then put a translucent layer of red coloring over it to make it look like it was heating up. I also used translucent layers for the steam. I love how B.O.N.N.I.E. is cowering behind Belt Boy in the last panel. While she could easily have communicated with BB without popping out of his belt - much like she did in the previous comic - I felt that making her hide behind him made her emotion that much stronger.

  11. Comic 2/25/17 - Now Hear This

    theheroesofcrash.com Somewhere between Justice League and Tom and Jerry... lies The Heroes of C.R.A.S.H. Hoo boy! Today's comic was quite an undertaking. I wound up using a lot of layers for that last panel in order to have the translucent layers and sound effects. The last two panels, at one point, were going to be one long panel, with an additional image of Sunflower just before she crashed into the wall, but breaking it up into two panels seemed to let the action flow a bit more, making it easier to read. I decided to make the two panels share scenery and a stretched-out word balloon to illustrate that the two images are close to each other in terms of both distance and time. Well, here they are: How to Enter Step 1: Create some awesome fanart Step 2: Attach said awesome fanart to an e-mail with the subject "Birthday Fanart Contest - [Name of Category]" Step 3: Send that e-mail to heroesofcrash@yahoo.com Step 4: Tell all your friends how awesome The Heroes of C.R.A.S.H. is (Optional) Traditional Fanart Category Traditional Fanart means any fanart that you've painted/drawn/sculpted/etc. You could send drawings, sketches, paintings, pixel art, sculptures, or decorated cupcakes. Your medium could be pencil, pen, crayon, charcoal, clay, Play-Doh, Model Magic, jelly beans, metal, gelatin... whatever! What DOESN'T count for this category? Only something that falls under the... Generated Fanart Category Generated Fanart means that you've created a character using a video game (Such as a Mii or a wrestler from a WWE game) or some sort of online character creator (Like Hero Machine or Gaia Online).     theheroesofcrash.com Belt Boy's used the Wrapper Rope of Righteousness before... waaaaaaaaaaaay back in his first battle against Miss Sunflower. Tying her to the trash can appears to be a new twist, but it looks like this plan might backfire on him...! The sound effects in the first panel are actually borrowed from the first time BB used his Wrapper Rope. I even wrote the letters in green, similar to how they were written before. Drawing Miss Sunflower was a pain, but the backgrounds - though difficult - were more fun to play around with. The anime influences on my art aren't as strong as they once were, but every so often they make themselves known, like in that last panel (which I love!).

  14. Comic 2/4/17 - Belt Boy Flips His Lid

    theheroesofcrash.com She's back! The return of the super-mean, superpowered supervillain (with a super-silly name), Miss Sunflower! Seems Belt Boy wants to calm her hot temper with some refreshing soda, but is this plan all wet? I accidentally gave today's comic's title to last week's comic, although it's still pretty apt. Last week's title was supposed to have been "Old School" - a reference to all the mentions of school in the dialogue, as well as to Belt Boy's classic science class project-based plan. This week's title, I came up with off the top of my head. A good portion of my comic is inspired by the old Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoons of the late 80s and early 90s. While a lot of people don't really like how the Turtles would often resort to silly visual gags and slapstick instead of actual ninja fighting, I still enjoy it, and today's gag is an homage to that. I do, after all, want to give my comic the feel of a Saturday morning cartoon. I'm decently pleased with how the layout of today's comic turned out, given the limited space I alotted myself. If I could add a panel, I'd put one between panels 4 and 5, showing Miss Sunflower struggling to her feet.
  15. theheroesofcrash.com Seems Belt Boy has a plan coming together... and it's going to either be brilliant or extremely silly. Oh, who am I kidding? Knowing Belt Boy, it'll probably be both. For this comic, I decided that B.O.N.N.I.E. could communicate with Belt Boy without putting up her screen via his B-Chip - the communication device that he, Cannon, and Titanium Maiden all have hidden in their headgear. It seems logical, as having her screen out would probably keep him from running as fast. I also decided to have BB look a bit less worn-out than he did in the last strip in which he appeared; he's covering it up a bit better as he puts his "game face" on. Plus, I think it helps that he's focused on one thing right now: defeating Miss Sunflower. And I'll admit, I just like how he looks in the first panel and I didn't want to ruin it by frazzling his hair or showing the bags under his eyes. So I'll excuse them away however I want. So there. Nyah, nyah. :-P Seriously, though, I do like his pose in that first panel. While I've been largely focused on improving the anatomy of my characters over the past year or so, I feel like I've neglected the "toony" side of their design, leaving my characters a bit stiff. So, I'm doing a bit of experimenting by starting my drawings with a "line of action" in order to make better poses. From what I understand, it's best to exaggerate the line of action as much as possible, as it loses some of that exaggeration when you add in structure. I think that first panel is an indication of how well it's helping; BB looks like he's really moving. The title of this comic is a reference to actor Paul Zaloom, who played the title character on Beakman's World. While I appreciate Bill Nye's past and continuing contributions to the scientific community, he was only my third favorite educational TV scientist. My second favorite was Mr. Wizard (I remember waking up early in the morning and seeing Mr. Wizard's World on Nickelodeon many times hwen I was really, really young), and my number one pick was - you guessed it - Beakman. His show was a lot like Bill Nye's with its comedic tone and cartoony sound effects, but he had two co-stars (A disgruntled man in a rat suit named Lester, who often served as the straight man or victim for many a joke, as well as one of three different female lab assistants that changed between seasons), and he actually answered kids' science questions that were mailed to him (In an era where the internet wasn't popular yet, computers weren't in every house, and Googling stuff was essentially impossible, this was HUGE.). Also, I got to meet "Beakman" at a science museum tour, help him on stage, and get his autograph, so he's definitely a sentimental favorite. :-) Oh, and lastly, did you catch that pop culture reference on the cover of Belt Boy's book? That gag was a last-minute addition, and I hope some of my fellow animation fans get it...!

  16. Comic 1/21/17 - Sneaky as a Fox

    theheroesofcrash.com Ouch. Enticia would not take that as a compliment if she could hear that comment. And she'd probably have some qualms about ever being called "foxy" again. Now, I'll say this: I won't make fun of Megan Fox as a person. I don't know much about her personally. But as an actress, she's pretty subpar. She doesn't show much expression in her roles. I've heard some people argue that that's just how her face looks, but I disagree; I've seen her show emotion in interviews. Specifically when she did the first Ninja Turtles movie and she said how much she loved The Secret of the Ooze and how she had a childhood crush on Michelangelo. She was really, visibly jubilant about that, and I have to respect her taste there.Of course, when they asked her if she'd REALLY patched things up with Michael Bay, her gaze dropped, her voice became monotone, and she kept blinking as she said that they were "all good friends now". Yeah, not good at acting, not good at lying, and not good at portraying April O'Neil. But she still deserves better than having to put up with Michael Bay. Yeesh. Anyway, I digress. I used some copy/paste in the Sketch layer for the top two panels, but made the effort to make sure that Unk and Enticia's arms switched sides. I'm pretty pleased with Jackknife's expression in that last panel, as well.
  17. theheroesofcrash.com Enticia's trying to be a better person. She really is. But those brownies do NOT make it easy. When I first started drawing Enticia's boyfriend harem as featureless figures, it wasn't out of sheer laziness (although that was the primary reason). Part of it was because I hadn't decided who was actually IN her harem at the time. While I do have a good chunk of her harem figured out now, I must admit that I like the symbolic notion of her boyfriends practically being a part of the background, which is pretty telling about her relationship with them...! By the way, it's hard to tell, but Bastion has a very slight, very subtle, purple tinge to him in that last panel, in order to show that he's still part of the harem, even if he does stand out to Enticia a lot more. I'm trying to put my characters in more dramatic poses by using exaggerated lines of action; I'm pretty happy with how it turned out in panel #2.
  18. theheroesofcrash.com ...then who can you trust? Well, you can trust me when I tell you that Dino-Mo isn't going to take Belt Boy and Sugar Rush's actions lightly...! While I'm trying to make most of my characters more proportionally consistent, I'm less concerned about doing so with Gelatin Boy. I feel like it reinforces the fact that he's a blob of gelataneous goo, capable of squashing and stretching even more than my already-toony characters. Plus it makes it easier to play with his expressions, which is helpful when he doesn't have visible eyes.
  19. theheroesofcrash.com Hoo boy... Dexter's not terribly optimistic about 2017. Personally, although I think it would be naive to assume that any problems we had in 2016 will go away by themselves come January first, I'm a bit more hopeful that we as a people can turn things around by getting active and trying to make this world better. While 2016 has had its share of terrible events - from celebrity deaths, to a zoo tragedy becoming a ridiculous meme, to a racist tangerine being elected to the most powerful office in the world - I'm at least glad that I was able to make my own year a little better with my Daily Drawings. It was fun, it got my art a lot of attention, it got me to experiment with my art, and it's the first New Year's resolution I actually kept. That being said - although I may do a few bonus drawings that I owe after New Year's - I do not plan to continue the Daily Drawings into 2017. Instead, I'm going to take some time to focus on improving my writing. As a webcomic creator, art is but half of the equation. I want better dialogue, deeper characters, and more engaging storylines, so I want to get better at writing so that The Heroes of C.R.A.S.H. can continue to improve. I also have a few ideas for other books and projects I'd like to flesh out further, but I'm keeping them under my hat... for now...! Wishing you all a happy 2017!   20. Filler 12/24/16 - A Christmas Wish

    theheroesofcrash.com Well, folks, at the time that I'm typing this, it's in the wee small hours of the morning on Christmas Eve! By sundown it'll be Chanukkah, by tomorrow it'll be Christmas, and the day after that is Kwanzaa! There's so many wonderful holidays this weekend, and - especially in times like these where there's a lot of outspoken hatred and prejudice - it's important that we take the time to celebrate and appreciate both what makes us different AND what we share in common. We all have different, beautiful ways of celebrating the same values of love and goodwill towards others, and we should do our best to show that throughout the year. So whether you celebrate none, one, or many of the holidays occurring this December, know that I wish you a happy and safe holiday season. I know I've had Muppets on the brain a bit lately (You've seen my Daily Drawings, right?), but I honestly thought that this quote was a good one to use; despite being from a Christmas song, it reaches out to people of all faiths. Jim Henson was a man who appreciated diversity and sought to give people an idea of what a peaceful world could be like through educational shows like Sesame Street or the social commentary of Fraggle Rock, so it seems more than appropriate to use his words for this filler. Wishing you all Happy Holidays! Canonical comics return in January! :-)

    theheroesofcrash.com We cut away from Belt Boy to discover the ramifications of his earlier actions. Or inactions. Or Sugar Rush's actions...? Well, whatever; Belt Boy wasn't there, and Gelatin Boy got thrown in the trash quicker than Trump's campaign promises (Not that they were good promises to begin with). Speaking of Trump, I hope that you contacted the electoral college before they officially vote on Monday (Using the e-mail list at AskTheElectors.org or the contact info at FlipThe37.blogspot.com like I've been suggesting all this past week on Tumblr and Facebook). And if you're reading this after Monday... well I hope Trump ALSO got thrown out quicker than his aforementioned campaign promises. Seriously, 2016 owes us this after such a nationally-despised year.
  22. Belt Boy's ready to take on Miss Sunflower mano a mano...Or is that mano y mano? Mano y womano? *A quick Google search later...* Huh... it's really "mano a mano", and that means "hand-to-hand"... Which may not be accurate since BB and Sunflower are both decked out in tech gear. Well, in any event, there's gonna be some fighting. Not much commentary to add on this strip, except maybe that I really like BB's pose in panel #2. I actually have a bit more commentary for last week's strip: I went back and edited last week's strip; I accidentally forgot to put on B.O.N.N.I.E.'s eye lens. Whoops!
  23. theheroesofcrash.com Isn't that always how it goes? You think you have everything sorted out, and then WHAM! Life throws you a curveball that hits you right between the eyes. What emergency is Belt Boy being alerted to? Find out next time! Y'know, we don't see a lot of B.O.N.N.I.E. in the comic. This is largely because - although she has thoughts, feelings, and emotions - she is still a computer program, and while it would be a stretch to say she lacks free will, she does have some limitations on what she can do. She doesn't pop out of Belt Boy's utility belt unless summoned, or unless she's been instructed to appear under certain conditions (like if there's an emergency). Still, she can act on her own when given free reign (She plays a LOT of online games when not actively helping BB with tasks!). The other reason is that her "vector look" is a bit annoying to draw at times. She might be due for a redesign (Or, in her case, an upgrade!).
  24. theheroesofcrash.com Ah, back to canonical comics. I put in a lot of effort to get this week's comic ready on time between all the cleaning and Thanksgiving prep I've been helping with. I aim to keep doing canonical comics until Christmas and New Year's, when I'll have some appropriately seasonal fillers. I'm totally enjoying this storyline, but I don't want it to drag on forever like the last one did, and so I'm trying to keep the details necessary, the story concise, and the fillers to a minimum. Hope you're enjoying it! While I've been working on my characters' anatomy, I don't want them to lose their toony quality, so I've also been working to make them look less stiff. I'm hoping that Belt Boy's energy and fluxuating moods come across in this week's strip.

Anyone who knows me, knows that as soon as December begins, I practically turn into a Christmas elf with enough holiday cheer to light up the tree in Rockefeller Center. I was initially going to have the radio play Christmas music (One local station has already started! Ugh!) to hammer home the idea that we start Christmas too early, but I decided to go with a slightly more obscure joke and have the radio start playing Alice's Restaurant. Fans of this song know that it's played EVERY Thanksgiving on many radio stations across the country (My family always listens... especially my mom and my sister Tyler Winthrop , who are HUGE Arlo Guthrie fans!). I recommend giving this song a listen, especially in light of certain political events as of late. Those of you who are anxiously awaiting the next canonical strip are probably a tad frustrated, having three fillers in four weeks, but we have had two holidays and one disastrous election I wanted to address. I do hope you've been enjoying my fillers, but if not, I plan on making the next four updates be canonical comics, up until the Christmas and New Year's fillers.
