  1. What Are You Ingesting?

I got accused of spreading tea porn in the Scribophile moderators forum.

  4. What Are You Ingesting?

Lapsang Souchong Smoky Black Tea. Two teaspoons steeped in 12oz. water for 2½ minutes at 192°F. I definitely need to let it steep longer. The suggestions on the tin said 1-5 minutes, so I played conservative. Got all smoke and little tea flavor. Still, every sip brings back memories of Central Texas barbecue joints that I grew up with, so that's a plus. Yeah, I never thought I'd say this, but it needs to be stronger! Wow.
  5. What Are You Ingesting?

... and I didn't have to wait too long—just an hour or so since my last post, the mailman drops off the tea from China! And boy howdy, were they nice to me. In addition to the full Downy Dragon Pearls and Lapsang Souchong Smoky Black Tea orders, I got the following samples: Aged Raw Pu-erh Brick Tea 2005 - 10g (ordered free sample) Fuding Shou Mei White Tea Cake 2011 - 10g (ordered free sample) Jasmine Snow Bud Green Tea - 7g (extra free sample) Lapsang Souchong Wild Black Tea - 7g (extra free sample) Organic Lapsang Souchong Smoky Black Tea - 7g (extra free sample) My only regret is that I'd just poured a big, fresh glass of Crystal Light Tea with Lemon. It's okay. I feel a shutdown coming on, so after I wake up, I'll give teas a chance.
  6. What Are You Ingesting?

A better-brewed cup of jasmine green tea. Might be the last for a while, since my Teavivre order from China is supposed to arrive today! In addition to the Dragon Pearls mentioned in my last message, I've got a tin of Lapsang Souchong and a sample of 2005 Pu-Erh brick tea. The customer service person also comped me three extra samples for the trouble with my original order, so I'm looking forward to seeing what they sent. Arrival due by 8pm. I can't wait!
  7. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

Got a phone call to remind me about my appointment with the psychiatrist tomorrow. This appointment has been three times rescheduled. I assured the receptionist that I would be there this time. Barring any suspected heart attacks, that is.
  8. Things that make you sad.

The potted flowering plant made it to my friend's father's funeral. He called it "beautiful." Told his mother that he wanted it if she didn't. At least some good came from this.
  9. Things that make you worried.

The mayor of the city of Garland, TX has resigned, just last night. He resigned over the decision of the city council to tear down an old armory and build a skate part / dog park in its place. Claimed it was against the will of the people of the city. What worries me is that Mrs. Prof claims he was a TNR supporter. The Mayor Pro Tem will fill in until the next regular election, which happens in May 2018. No clue where he stands on TNR.

English muffin toasted. Topped with Tiptree Little Scarlett Conserve, which (according to the novels) was James Bond's favorite jam. That should give me a positive energy rush for a little while.
  11. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

5:59 a.m. CDT 20171018. T-minus seven days until surgery day. Getting anxious still. Did a blog post about the surgery yesterday. Being stuck in this damned house doesn't help any, and neither does the Astros losing again. Right now, I'm sitting in my usual place with a heating pad slung over my shoulder to keep from shivering. My Nest thermostat says we're right at 77°F, but my body is feeling the 50s outside. I've already taken all of my pills and am just waiting for them to kick in and knock me out. Debating about whether or not to get up and toast an English muffin for breakfast.

  15. Blogs

Just an all-purpose thread on blogs. If you have one, if you read one and like it, if you have comments about one. Fire when ready. I'll start things off with a little post about software and the death of paper documentation. https://dleejackson.lbjackson.com/2017/09/new-software-and-a-lament-for-paper-manuals/
  16. The Pharaoh Returns

Welcome to life in a low-budget drum & bugle corps from the early 80s. Seriously, welcome back!
  17. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

Good lord. Seven years?!?!? You have my deepest sympathies, my friend. I don't know what else to say, other than I'm glad you're feeling better. I can somewhat sympathize, though. After my gall bladder was removed, my bile duct kept wanting to slam shut. Strictures, the doctor said. He had to go back in twice through my mouth to cut it open, again to implant a stent, and again to remove the stent. After that, he put me on a medicine called Actigall, meant to keep gall fluids flowing, in the hope that it would keep me from having strictures. As it turned out, the stent had fixed the problem, but I went on the Actigall unnecessarily for two years after that. It made me sweat uncontrollably at the slightest exertion. You should have seen me at E3—I hope no one recognized me—I had to go back to my room and take a second shower one day of the show because of the sweating. It also gave me massive bile duct spasms that kept me on a pain medication (Talwin NX) for years. Eventually a gastroenterologist took me off of it and all my problems went away. Miracle cure.
  18. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

Don't jinx me! Every time I thing something medical is finally coming to an end, it goes sideways. I would be interested to hear how you can relate to it, though, if you don't mind sharing.
  19. What Are You Ingesting?

Back on my jasmine green tea again. You know, after drinking something as strong as pu erh for as little as 10 cups, even that makes my jasmine green tea seem somewhat flavorless now. Teavivre is sending a stronger jasmine green tea next time, though. They had distribution problems and ran out of what I'd ordered, so they "upgraded" me from Premium Jasmine Dragon Pearls Green Tea to Superfine Jasmine Downy Dragon Pearls Green Tea. It is a more expensive tea, granted—let's just hope it tastes better than the sample of the Premium that I got with my first order.
  20. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

4:46 a.m. CDT 20171017. T-minus 8 days until surgery. Yes, we're starting the countdown thing again, mainly because my anxiety level has already risen a bit in advance of the HF10 implant surgery. Anyone every see the movie based on Michael Crichton's The Terminal Man? I always get those heebie-jeebies ahead of any kind of nerve stimulation procedure, and this is the doozy of them all. It's the first one to get close to my cerebrospinal area. I don't want to wind up like the main character did. Overanxiety, I know. I should be superhappy that I'm going to be losing the pain and the hydrocodone. Still ...
  21. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

FINALLY! I've been approved for the trial implant of the spinal stimulator which will hopefully get rid of my back pain! The implant surgery is scheduled for sometime on Wednesday, October 25th (yes, that soon!). They'll be implanting a trial Nevro HF10 spinal cord stimulator that operates at 10 KHz. The "test drive" will last about a week. If I like how it works, they can do a permanent implant later in a second procedure. I've been on the phone about it all day last Friday and once this morning. The office manager got back to me rather quickly today. Also today, I got a letter from Blue Cross with approvals for a ton of different procedures, each of which I guess will be necessary to implant the device. I think it'll be done outpatient, which is a blessing given my recent inpatient experience.
  22. I need to vent.

I don't even know if this is a vent. Depression has got me down hard today. I've barely seen Mrs. Prof, and even after she's come home she's still working on stuff from the National Feral Cat Day thing at the pet adoption center. Even she had depressing news—one of their kittens died today. Between all of that and my body acting like it's hitting tolerance to the hydrocodone, I can't seem to get a good thought in my head (other than the tea thought). I'm even having to eat chicken tonight. I'm a beef eater. So, in an attempt to fight all of this off, I'm going to post a photo of the house I lived in in Pasadena, TX from age 5 to age 13 (I think). Differences between now and then: The Google GPS mark wasn't there. There was a garage. The house was painted white. There was no air conditioner in the front right window. There were a pair of wax-leaf lugustrum trees on either side of the driveway entry. That god-awful car wasn't there. The hedgerow in front of the house had a garden (hah!) of horrid plants. The two trees near the car weren't there. Other than that, I'm sure there are a million differences between now and then that I can't see. Mrs. Prof is treating Baker better than she's treating me at the moment. Why do I care? Vent over.

  24. Things That Make You Happy

My second order from Teavivre has just today arrived stateside, in Chicago! @CritterKeeper, you think you can grab a cattle prod and hurry 'em up there?
  25. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

I think I'm hitting a physical tolerance with my hydrocodone. I had a moment after waking up that was reminiscent of the time before I was on the medicine, when everything from my back down my right side hurt intensely. I checked the clock, and sure enough—it was dose time. I may have to report this to my pain management doctor, but I don't know what he'll do. Probably drug test me (I'm in the clear there), but I don't know what else. Kinda worries me.
