I admit that I am impressed they even have a vaccine against shingles. I'd like one. I once almost got hit by a falling roofing tile during a storm and it scared the hell out of me.

King Charles I had a similar problem.  You may not like Cromwell's solution.

Parents can. I may have caused a few myself.

Being an expert in cartoon physics, I can safely say that falling rock traps are only dangerous to the coyotes who set them.

Heh. I saw one on TV a few decades ago. Two cowboys facing off, one of them says "this town ain't big enough for the both of us" - then the camera pans out and the town is actually a model-railroad town around their feet.

I have driven in ice storms in three states. I don't recommend it - if you have a viable alternative, do that instead.
That said: it's worse in areas that rarely gets such things (such as Seattle where I lived for 30+ years, Portland OR that I was driving through during one, and Dallas where the Professor is) than in areas where they are fairly common (such as Indiana where I went to college).
There are several reasons why the areas that rarely get them get it worse. Three big ones:
    1) Almost nobody knows how to drive in them
    2) Almost nobody - not road maintenance crews, not emergency services, not electric line crews, not city buses - has specialized equipment to deal with them. (Seattle buses typically need chains for one 24-hour period, or less, every five to eight years; guess what they usually aren't carrying when that time arrives, particularly if it starts in mid-afternoon.)
    3) Ice at 31.5 degrees Fahrenheit is much slicker than ice at 0 Fahrenheit.

Adrian is approximately (best estimate) 600 years old. He was born in Europe. He has living descendants.
Statistically, something over half of the people in the world with European ancestry in the past 600 years should be descended from him. (If he were a thousand years old, it wouldn't be "something over half" - it would be "essentially all".)
I doubt he was the first Elf. And I doubt that Elves happened only in Europe.
IMHO, pretty much everyone in the world has at least one Immortal ancestor, and most have more than one.

    Humpty-Dumpty time...
I had a great fall yesterday as I was returning from getting blood work done.  I was stepping up onto my porch/landing/whatever in front of my front toor, and my leg cramped up as I put weight on it.  I collapsed as a result, faceplanting into the wooden beam alongside the left of my doorr entryway. and slamming my leg into the concrete.at the base. I cut my hand and my butt. My wife had to call an ambulance to get me up. I'm still shaking from the fall. Still somewhat traumatized. My left knee got knocked out of alignment. My neck hurts on my right side. I'm shaking a lot, and my wife wrapped up my hand in gauze. More details as I can remember them.

    Hoooo-boy...
I spent about 15 minutes trying to clear off the little end table where my daily medicine dispenser boxes sit. They'd gotten pretty overloaded: I'd say there was about 5 inches of paper piled on top of it. I managed to move about an inch before the pain in my lower back became unbearable and I had to stop. I barely made it over to the recliners, collapsed in mine, and just sat for several minutes until I could get back enough control to type this up. Even that's been a strenuous affair, requiring several breaks to get my hands to stop shaking.
I'm really going to feel this in the morning. Hoooo-boy...

Much prefer having my body over yours, Prof, and I have my right arm in a sling with no idea why my shoulder has hurt so much for the last four days. (I can do left-handed mouse, but left-handed typing is awkward.)
May all your {censored} get resolved favorably, and soon.

Yesterday evening my laptop suddenly stopped detecting any Wi-Fi signals; borrowing my parents' laptop I determined that the Wi-Fi was fine - my laptop was the problem. Restarting the computer only made it worse - now the icon on the taskbar and the entry in the settings for Wi-Fi were gone entirely. I didn't want to wait for a computer repair place to be open to fix the problem (or to either pay for someone to fix it or try to make use of the warranty) if I didn't have to, so I used my parents' computer to go to the website of my computer's manufacturer (ASUS) and check the support section for suggestions.
I found a solution that seems to have worked for the moment, but before I thought to go to the ASUS site I found a bunch of Redit posts complaining about the network card my laptop has (and the drivers for said card) not being very reliable, and some people talking about having this problem repeatedly. So now I find myself worried that my laptop's wireless functions could malfunction again at any time without warning.

If you're thinking of dual-booting Windows and Linux, I strongly recommend having two separate drives. Leave the Windows install alone, and install Linux on the second drive.
Then if you need to reinstall Windows, disconnect the Linux drive. Don't trust the Windows install process to keep its hands off.

So I'm at the restaurant waiting for my omlette when a cook tells a waitress "we have no bananas".
Why is there never a barbeshop quartet arround when you need one?

Well, it's reported that they did win their first big battle...
...that being, the regular-army troops demanded that the conscripts hand over all the personal possessions they brought with them (apparently a traditional thing in that military), and the much more numerous conscripts beat the tar out of them.

Warn your manicurist. The good ones can make allowances that drastically reduce the chance of getting cut.
(Note though that "drastically reduce" is not "eliminate".)

The US has this strange conceit embedded in our Constitution, that it is solely the US Congress' decision whether or not the US is at war.
You'd think the nation attacking us would have some say in the matter.
Iran, as I understand things, has been at war against the US since very shortly after the Shah lost power. They've had a finger in numerous attacks against the US, its allies, and neutral nations. But the US is not at war.
