It is actually derived from burgher (referring to townfolk rather than delicious meat patty sandwiches). That's boring, though.

It's really a pity that most people's knowledge of Helen Keller's life begins and ends with her childhood, because she was a remarkable woman!  She was not the first deaf and blind person to learn to communicate; Charles Dickens had already written about Laura Bridgman's achievements there, which is what inspired her family to go beyond the home sign language they'd relied on until that point.  But she was the first deaf-blind person to earn a bachelor's degree, from Radcliffe College in Harvard University, and went on to become a world-renowned author, public speaker, and activist.
She campaigned for women's rights and suffrage, labor rights, and socialism, as well as advocating for the disabled.  She was one of the founders of the American Civil Liberties Union.  She was not a communist but a member of the Socialist Party.  When she advocate dfor the disabled, she spoke openly about the link between poverty and disability, such as poor factory conditions and diet, as well as women forced into prostitution contracting syphilis, then a leading cause of blindness.  She realized just how lucky she had been to be deaf and blind in a family who could afford to hire specialist teachers and send her to special schools, and fought to help others with disabilities who did not have access to such advantages.
She also carried out a secret love affair, and engagement, and almost eloped.  She enjoyed music through feeling its vibrations.  She traveled to dozens of countries and was friends with fellow radical Mark Twain.  She outlived not only her teacher and companion Anne Sullivan, but her successor Polly Thomson, and her ashes were placed next to theirs in the National Cathedral.  She was not perfect; she was a follower of Swedenborg and a supporter of eugenics.  We tend to picture her in a Victorian or Edwardian setting, but she didn't pass away until 1968!

"The few own the many because they possess the means of livelihood of all ... The country is governed for the richest, for the corporations, the bankers, the land speculators, and for the exploiters of labor. The majority of mankind are working people. So long as their fair demands—the ownership and control of their livelihoods—are set at naught, we can have neither men's rights nor women's rights. The majority of mankind is ground down by industrial oppression in order that the small remnant may live in ease."
    — Helen Keller, 1911

Happy Children's Day!   On May 5 in History:   553 - The Second Council of Constantinople begins, with the goal of once and for all getting everyone on the same page about how to Christian. Predictably, it ends up doing the opposite of that.   1215 - English Barons say they don't have to do what the king says anymore. Quite sure he'd kept it a secret, King John wracks his brain wondering how they figured that out.   1260 - Kublai Khan assumes control over the Mongol Empire. What's left of it, anyway. Barely half of Asia! Pathetic. We'll have to do something about that.   1494 - Christopher Columbus lands at Jamaica. An old hand at this by now, he quickly issues orders to his crew, saying, "All right, hurry up, these people aren't going to murder and enslave themselves!"   1789 - The Estates-General in France convene for the first time in 175 years. This is good; they'll be able to talk through their problems and everything will settle down.   1821 - Death of Napoleon. Europe heaves a collective sigh of relief.   1862 - A contingent of the Mexican army defeats a much larger French force at the town of Puebla. This will be celebrated in future by Americans who know nothing of the event donning every Mexican stereotype they can think of and drinking lots of tequila. Also by Mexicans saying, "Oh yeah, that's a thing that happened."   1904 - Cy Young pitches the first perfect game in modern baseball history. If only there were some award he could be given to acknowledge his achievement.   1925 - John T. Scopes is arrested and charged with teaching science in a science class.   1961 - Alan Shepard is the first American to go to space. This was your one chance to stop us, aliens.   1983 - Henry Cavill is the first baby in history born with a computer generated upper lip.   2002 - Spider-man is the first movie to top $100 million dollars in its opening weekend. Maybe there's something to these comic book movies after all, eh?

    On April 25 in History:
404 BCE - Sparta finally defeats Athens in the Peloponnesian War. They determine that Athens is going to be one of their best buddies now. Athens is thrilled.
799 - The citizens of Rome are mean to Pope Leo III, so he runs away and asks for help from the king of the Franks - some guy named Charles.
1792 - Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle pens a startlingly gory call to arms that French citizens still sing proudly today whenever one of their countrymen wins a bobsled medal or something.
1846 - American Dragoons scouting in what they knew full well was territory claimed by Mexico are attacked and soundly defeated by Mexican forces. Upon hearing the news, President James K. Polk is outraged at this completely unforeseen turn of events, and determines he now simply has no choice but to go to war with Mexico and take a bunch of their land. A remarkable coincidence, as he'd just been trying to come up with a viable excuse to do that.
1898 - The United States retroactively declares war on Spain. It is SO a thing!
1915 - The landings at Gallipoli begin. This is the last time that phrase will be used to refer to an actual invasion of the Gallipoli peninsula, as opposed to simple shorthand for a catastrophic invasion attempt doomed to failure.
1916 - The first ANZAC Day is observed. From this year onward, citizens of Australia and New Zealand will commemorate soldiers lost not only in the doomed campaign, but in all wars. They also faithfully reenact the infamous battle by means of trying to find a parking space.
1936 - Henck Arron is born. He will consider being the first prime minister of Suriname a more impressive accomplishment than his fabulous home run count.
1944 - Incorporation of the United Negro College Fund, an organization everyone agrees is necessary due to the fact it's still considered appropriate to have the word "Negro" in it.
1959 - The St. Lawrence Seaway solves Canada's problem of the major city of Toronto being so far from the sea by simply bringing the sea to Toronto.
1983 - The leader of the Soviet Union writes a personal letter to a fifth grade girl in Maine, promising not to nuke her.
1990 - Violeta Chamorro becomes the first female president of Nicaragua. Get your act together, America!
1995 - Ginger Rogers dies. Her funeral will be carried out much the same as Fred Astaire's eight years before, but backwards and with everyone in fancier shoes.

Mph. As a kid I never did see the attraction. I was the social outcast and responded in the very mature way of taking pride in never doing what the other kids thought was cool. Drinking was one of these things.
Also, my mother was an alcoholic and drank enough to ruin four lives. This led me to a conclusion I have not once had any reason to change. If I don't begin, I don't have to stop.

Yeah, I know how that works. A friend of mine comes from a family of deep sea fishermen. One fine day as his uncle and his crew were merrily trawling the Baltic they caught a mine in their net. Some people might have cut the lines and gotten the blazes out of there. Some people aren't my friend's uncle. They secured the mine as best they could and tugged it back to Danish territorial waters where a naval explosives detail could get at it and disarm it. My friend's uncle spent that entire trip IN THE WATER holding the mine secure so it wouldn't accidentally bump the side of their boat and go off. I swear that man must have had nerves made of stainless steel.
The mine got safely disarmed and my friend's uncle took his crew off for a drink. I'd say they had all earned one. Admittedly the man himself was closest but with a mine intended to sink a warship that wouldn't have mattered. Their little boat would have been absolutely pulverised if the mine had gone off.

    Aw, thanks!

I probably won't have something everyday, but it's nice to know people enjoy this kind of thing.
    On April 10 in History:
837 - Halley's Comet makes its closest approach to Earth. Of course, Edmond Halley won't be born for another 800 years, so it is known at this time as, "Holy Shit, What The F*** Is That?"
1512 - James V of Scotland, later also James 0 of England, is born. That's it; I have been reduced to recycling jokes.
1606 - A royal charter from James I establishes the Virginia Company of London, for purposes of colonial settlements in North America. They have a low bar to clear; if their first attempt manages not to vanish completely without a trace, it will be considered a success.
1815 - Mount Tambora begins erupting. I say "begins" because it won't stop for another three months. The initial explosion can be heard on Sumatra more than 2,000 miles away, and the resulting changes in weather worldwide lead to the biggest famine of the century. Suck it, Vesuvius.
1816 - The creation of the Second Bank of the United States is approved. "We'll see about this," says Andrew Jackson.
1864 - Maximilian I, a Habsburg and younger brother of Austrian emperor Franz Joseph I, becomes Emperor of Mexico, proving once again that history is a lot crazier than most people realize.
1912 - The RMS Titanic sets sail for America on her maiden voyage to little fanfare. There's so little press coverage that no one even bothers to take a photo. I mean, what's the big deal, right? It's not like we won't see it several hundred more times.
1970 - Paul McCartney leaves the Beatles for "personal and professional reasons". This is code for, "F*** off, I just don't want to be in the Beatles anymore. Mind your business."
1992 - Daisy Ridley is born. Thousands of people will clamor for years to find out who her parents are, only to learn they haven't heard of either of them.
1998 - The people of the UK and Ireland agree to try sharing and cooperating instead of killing each other. It seems to work for them.

2005 - The fate of the Alpha Quadrant is sealed by an Idle Jedi.
2010 - Grace and Tedd dress up as rabbits.
2011 - Noah asks Justin about a Fire Thing.
2012 - Sarah falls out of bed.
2015 - Ashley shouts out that she's from California.
2016 - Tara and Andrea say goodbye to Nanase & Cheerleadra. Meanwhile, Grace looses Karma.

397 - Future king K'uk B'alam I of the Mayan city of Bàakʼ(Palenque) is born. I'm just putting this on here to emphasize how awesome it is that we know that.
1492 - Isabella of Castile to her Jewish and Muslim subjects: "Catholic or GTFO."
1596 - René Descartes begins thinking.
1631 - John Donne is finished. Caput. Finito. No more. Expired and gone to meet his maker. ...Okay, I'm done.
1854 - The Tokugawa Shogunate determines that allowing foreigners to trade is a better idea than being blown up.
1889 - The Eiffel Tower opens. It is a hideous metal monstrosity that will make Paris the laughing stock of the cultured world.
1949 - Newfoundland joins Canada, under condition that they will be the butt of all jokes for the next 150 years.
1995 - Selena is murdered by the president of her fan club, who decided she didn't like the singer as much after not being allowed to embezzle money from said club.
1998 - Refusing to let Microsoft have the last laugh, Netscape releases their browser source code for free.
