Here they even went from vertical to horizontal on the couch!
  2. Story Friday April 28, 2017

Dracula itself was the high-tech thriller of its day, with main characters using wax cylinder voice recording devices and taking high-speed trains cross-country. But as I said, a doctor would have at least known blood transfusions were very dangerous, moreso the more they were repeated. And okay, he might not have been a famous vampire killer yet, but any knowledge at all about such an obscure creature was rare, let alone the varied and exacting details Van Helsing brought. Vampires weren't exactly common knowledge until Stoker made it so. A brilliant strategy by either the White Council or the Red Court.... Using Grace's form? The Uryuoms described the TFG as a "cosmetic morphing device" so I'm not convinced that using it (or the watches) to take on someone else's form would change the genes the resulting child would receive. Or did you mean an egg created by Grace? We don't know whether she inherited the ability to make an egg on her own, but if she did, or if they could convince William and Gillian to create an egg for them, they might be able to create a child who is biologically equally Ellen's and Nanase's. Unless there's Uryuom DNA in there, too, the child would be a Lesser Chimera according to Dan's explanation, and would "have some characteristics similar to a Uryuom, but won't truly be Uryuom." No idea how that might affect a 100% human chimera, as I don't think we've seen one of those yet....
  3. The Weather.

Sorry, but I'm now associating you with my own patients who react badly to thunderstorms and fireworks. Have you tried a Thundershirt? ;-)
  4. What Are You Ingesting?

Tonkotsu flavor Ramen. It's a large instant bowl that I originally bought at Epcot when I was expecting to be staying in the hotel at least three more days and wanted something to eat other than PB&J. When I made my hurried exit, I tossed it into the shopping bag I'd tossed a few other things that didn't fit either the suitcase or the official carry-on, figuring I could always throw it out if I had to, and they let me get away with it. It was pretty good, nothing to drive an hour out of your way for but definitely worth eating if it's handy.
  5. We're getting Goonmanji 2!!!

Most frustrating for the Game would be Grace, Tedd, Sarah (as she is now), Elliott, and Ashley. (Who says it's limited to four players?) Trickiest part for Dan will be making sure it's not just a retelling of the same story. Goonmanji has to have some new tricks up its sleeve!
  6. Story Friday April 28, 2017

With traditional Hollywood vampires, they need an invitation to enter a dwelling. We don't know whether Sirleck's host is doomed. The old man didn't die until Sirleck released him, and for all we know, he could have released him at some earlier point and he would have lived. Killing Sirleck while he's on a host is equally unknown re fate of the host. Van Helsing did give Lucy Westerna blood transfusions from four different men, no checking whether their blood types were compatible. And then he blamed the vampire when she died. (Not entirely his fault, it was another nine years before people had that even partially figured out, but he should at least have known it was dangerous and got moreso the more times he did it.) Anyone who has read the original Stoker novel should go read Fred Saberhagan's The Dracula Tapes. It's fun. And just how contrived a world did Stoker create, where Dracula's solicitor's wife's best friend's former suitor's mentor just happens to be a famous vampire killer? ;-)
  7. Story: Wednesday April 26, 2017

First, they need a clear plastic box big enough to fit a person (shrunken if neccessary). Another person to stand by on the phone to Susan, observing whether the spell has any effect on the person being summoned. And Susan far enough away and/or the summoned avatar behind enough of a barrier that if it works like a fairy and if it appears to be having an ill effect on the subject in the box, she can dismiss without risk of collateral damage. The person who's summoned might go catatonic (like Nanase when in a fairydoll), might get a first-person POV inside a doll of themself, might be completely unaware of what their avatar is doing and have no control over it, might feel something odd has happened....lots of variations. And concommitant variations on Susan's end, too; she might get a Nase-like semi-autonomous puppet (Magic seems to like those), she might get an effective clone, she might get a doll or ghost. She might be in complete control or have influence or be limited to unsummoning. Or it could do something really weird, like Susan and her subject swapping bodies. Only Dan might know. (ODMK?) Personally, I want to see if Susan can get a garden shed and mark it as her summoning container. Or mark a car. Or her house. Or the local public library or SCA headquarters....
  8. Story: Wednesday April 26, 2017

Clearly she needs a Handbag of Holding!
  9. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

    a) Sounds like a job for audiobooks! Can you nicely ask Mrs Prof from us to please at least post a quick update? Let us know you're done and recovering? c) or are we going to need to take up a collection to get you a nice, small, light tablet you can hold comfortably and peck out messages on one-handed?
  10. Favorite Quotes

One of my favorite novels of all time, Uhura's Song by Janet Kagan, slipped in a rule I often wish had spread to be right up there with Clarke's Third Law or Godwin's Law. Kagan's Law of First Contact: You'll surprise you more than they will. Meaning, when in a first contact situation, you'll kind of expect the other species to be different so they won't surprise you by it, but you'll learn a lot about both your own species and the individuals on your team/in your crew/above you in the chain of command when you're comparing them to both the other guys and your own expectations.
  11. Last Post Wins

If we start role playing, my favorites were always TOON and Teenagers From Outer Space. ;-D
  12. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

Unlike your pain meds, there's no limit on venting. Indulge as often as might help, and feel free to air on the side of extra venting. Perhaps a good audiobook? I really enjoyed both Gail Carriger's Soulless (the reader is a hoot!) and Big Finish's recent audio series The Diary of River Song. If they can play music, you'd think they could play anything else audio, too.
  13. Story: Monday April 24, 2017

I just came across another character who has rather long, sharp nails....
  14. The Weather.

They aren't completely bereft of sweat glands, but they don't have nearly as many as humans, who are the champion sweaters of the animal kingdom. The phrase "sweating like a pig" apparently actually refers to pig iron, and the way that, as it cools from extremely high temperatures, it eventually cools enough for moisture in the surrounding air to condense into water droplets on its surface.
  15. Things That Are Just Annoying

I just turn off any "feature" that threatens to change what I type. They're just not worth the hassle, and I usually know correct spelling and grammar better than they do.
  16. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

Remember the immortal words of Marcus Cole. "I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, 'wouldn't it be much worse if life *were* fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them?' So now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe." You didn't do anything. Crap happens. It sucks. If we can help make it suck any less with distractions, audience for venting, and sympathy, we're here. *virtual hugs* ('cos virtual ones don't make anything hurt more, unlike real ones might)
  17. Things You Only Noticed On Reread

In a way, but it was two friends having a frank discussion about a very personal situation. Being less than honest could lead to a lot more problems. She didn't say it in a condemning or belittling way, only that it was a factor she was considering.
  18. NP Friday April 21, 2017

I recall watching a video where they had the guy at the service counter duck down out of sight behind it, and then another guy stand back up again in his place. It was fun seeing how many people didn't seem to notice.
  19. Things You Only Noticed On Reread

Someone once made a comment about not even knowing if Susan has a sex drive. It occurred to me while re-reading that the vampire being able to mezmerize her in France is a pretty good sign she's got one, and that it includes men, given that Nanase was probably immune because she's not attracted to men. Sure we've seen further evidence since then, but that might have been much earlier confirmation.
  20. The Grammar Thread

I am now picturing a new subspecies of alot, perhaps one with an extra pair of horns to go with its pair of 'L's? :-) (Thanks for reminding me of a fun and perspective-giving cartoon!)
  21. Story Friday April 21, 2017

If I binge-watched Highlander could I gain the ability to heal any injury? Or to pull swords out of thin air? Would binge-watching The Tomorrow People give me teleportation, telepathy, and telekinesis?
  22. Story Friday April 21, 2017

Heh. My roommate in college one year was an anime fan, and instead of putting pictures of ourselves on our dorm room door, her side had a picture of Alita, and mine had the female protagonist from Crying Freeman. Which matched what we looked like surprisingly well. :-)
  23. Story Wednesday April 19, 2017

You do have the option of just looking at the maps on a GPSr, you know. You don't have to go to the Get Directions item and tell it where you're going, if you have more faith in your own navigating skills than the computer's. ;-)
  24. Story Wednesday April 19, 2017

I mostly use my Colorado GPSr for geocaching. A GPSr can hold detailed maps of every town in several states. You just can't get that sort of detail in a map book. I have a road atlas, which covers every state but doesn't get down to street level in more than a small section of the biggest few cities. I also have a folding map of a couple of cities, which again include the center of the city but not any real detail in the suburbs. With a GPSr, I can navigate through any part of Greater Chicagoland, from outer suburbs to major trails in the Forest Preserve, and I can find my way around a closed section of interstate while traveling downstate to my home town.
