  1. Story Friday November 18, 2016

Several years ago, The Animal Planet cable channel came up with the idea of offering counterprogramming during the Super Bowl, in the form of letting a bunch of puppies loose to play in a room decorated to look like a football field. The only human to appear on-camera was a guy dressed as a referee whose job was to clean up any Oopses from the puppies. At half-time, they switched from puppies to kittens for a few minutes. I believe it was one of the highest-rated competitors for the first few years. :-D Unfortunately, someone decided to start messing with a good thing. Instead of just watching puppies play, now we get biographies and stats for the puppies, and the view jumps around from camera to camera instead of just holding still and letting us watch the damn puppies.

Woo hoo! I read this just before going to a Dublin O'Shea performance, and it gave me one more excellent reason to dance! For me, I'm usually tired enough when I'm stuffy that it's more important to be able to breathe and not hurt. I take enough pseudoephedrine to make me comfortable, and sleep follows much better that way than if I were still stuffed up. You've probably heard this already, but they say exercise can really help with depression.

Bloomington-Normal is in central Illinois, so the furthest you can get from Normal and still be in Illinois would probably be Cairo, IL (pronounced like Karo syrup) in the southern tip of the state....although interestingly enough, Metropolis is almost as far south and slightly to the east, so it's possilble Metropolis is the furthest from Normal. Since you're supposed to be able to see the lights of Metropolis from up on top of the Smallville watertower, I guess that puts Smallville in southeastern Kansas....

Sorry I'm a bit behind, but please don't use that word. Like the n-word, there is no context in which it is not perjorative and offensive. The r-word has no place in any discussion, really, but I'm saddened to see it here of all places.

Which means a clever immortal might prod her to stay....

Sure, and he also shot J.R., and killed Laura Palmer! Dallas, the grassy knoll, it was him!
  7. What Are You Ingesting?

Tea does have caffeine, but it has other components which have a calming and relaxing effect. You could try green or white tea, which have less caffeine (white has the least) and more antioxidants (white tea has the most).
  8. Corrupt a Wish

Granted. Turns out you *had* such power, but never figured out how to use it, so it atrophied and won't work any more. I wish for Donald J. Trump to have a personal revelation and irreversibly become a far-left progressive, before he takes office.
  9. More Speculation.

He already thinks his mother is involved, thanks to the pithos on the amulet Dex was wearing. He's completely wrong about that particular incident being his mother, of course, but he does believe she's behind whatever part of this he's aware of.

It might be an old enough strip to not be canon any more, but Nanase says she got a late start on magic and thus was able to get new spells relatively quickly while catching up.
  11. Sorry I've been out of touch

    Absolutely! Welcome back!

I mostly feel sad. So many people who admit that Trump is not qualified for the job, yet voted for him anyway. So many people who described their vote as giving the finger to the status quo, or said they voted for Trump because they thought Clinton was worse, or didn't vote because they didn't think either candidate was worth voting for. Even among the Clinton supporters, while there were some like me, who saw her as a great positive force for doing good in this country and the world, there were an awful lot of people who said they voted for Clinton only because they thought Trump was worse, who bought into the constant barrage of accusations and innuendo. Her opponents knew if they slung enough mud, people would start believing she was dirty whether she actually was or not, and it worked. One of the most qualified candidates ever and a chance to have the first woman president in our country, and now we've lost that chance, for who knows how long? Having lost three times, I doubt Clinton will get another chance, which is especially sad considering how long and hard she's been serving her country. How did we get to a point where so many people think our country is so worthless, that it's not worth fighting to make it better, to build on what we've already accomplished? Why do so many people want to go backwards on equality and respect for women, on the religious freedom that's written into our Constitution, on trying to build a future together with kids who grew up here and want nothing more than to be productive members of society? Aren't they tired of seeing people lose everything because someone in the family got sick and it ate up their entire savings? Why have we become so bad at inspiring actual hope instead of hate and fear and selfishness? Why do so many people see life as a zero sum game, where the only way for them to rise is to push others down? Following a man based on personality, who blames our problems on foreigners and on one particular religion, who wants a strong military, who promises great things but doesn't say how he plans to deliver them until it's too late....we've seen this before. Last time, we helped save the world from him. But who will save the world from us? At best, he's a shyster who just conned his way into the most influential job in the world, and will be incompetent at it. At worst....he has nuclear weapons. How the heck did this happen?
  13. The Band Game

Their first album Callipygian did very well at local SF cons, especially after they did live performances at a few Barfleet room parties. Over three hundred copies sold, and they're hoping the follow-up The Scotsman's Kilt What Kilt? will do even better as they're scheduled to play at FUMPfest and Penguicon (although the latter is insisting on concessions regarding wardrobe so negotiations are ongoing). Square Root of Pie is an experimental synthesizer group composed of two mathematicians, a former British TV show background music composer, a baker, and some guy who plays electric guitar over a "Mr. Microphone" toy so that every radio within two blocks acts as his speakers.

We've had Republicans running Congress, and they've been deliberately trying to keep government from accomplishing anything. They hate the government and want it to be as small as possible, so they try to make it fail wherever possible, and then point to those failures as reasons to hate the government. It's the worst kind of self-fulfilling catch-22. If you really want to see change, to shake up the system and see some progress, the solution isn't just in the White House. The solution is to throw out the bums who have been sabotaging the system from within for decades, and get a majority in Congress who will actually work toward making the govenrment work. End the gridlock.
  15. Political Discussion Thread (READ FIRST POST)

Yeah, there's a long, long history of accusations being leveled against Senator Clinton, thorough investigations being conducted, often by her opposition, and them turning up nothing, yet the accusations get a hundred times the media coverage as the exonerations get. If she were really as crooked as Trump claims, you'd think they'd have been able to prove at least one crime by now.

Ugh. You would think they could at least stick you once and get all the blood in one sitting. Vacutainers FTW!
  17. More Speculation.

So if Susan s pretty much keeping a fairydoll summoned continuously (hiding her in her purse when needed), I have to wonder whether Susan's mom knows about Susan's magic yet. I suspect she would at first be annoyed at Susan doing something so girly as summoning a cutesy little fairy, but after Susan showed her she could summon weapons and tools, that would mollify her. Then again, maybe while Susan's man-hating turned into extreme feminism (less extreme since she's started to get to know more males), perhaps her mom would rather see a more feminine daughter. Maybe she's wishing Susan weren't so masculine in her dress and attitude. We're really only seen her a couple of times.

Wait, are you saying you played it such that drones were harder to take out than manned equivalents? But a drone only functions correctly if the remote pilot can see what the drone is doing, communicate with the drone in general, and tell the drone what to do -- it relies on cameras, remote controls, and a communications unit. Take out any one of the three, and the drone ceases to function properly. That gives you three vital targets, versus the crew cabin's one central target, which is presumably in the most protected location possible.
  19. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

GoodRX.com lists that for CVS but "only" about $4500 at Walgreens, with their coupon. Do you have insurance to bring your cost down from there, or should we start advertising a GoFundMe to all the gamers who have loved your music for years?

My compliments to Sableagle's modification in the comments section.
  21. Clearly Dan is mistaken about this asteroid's effects. FV5 is a consistent height as part of its definition, and it doesn't affect clothing. No, the asteroid is made of Tea, and has left particles of Tea in its wake which the Earth is now passing through. The height part is because this is Green Tea, whereas the Tea from the Tea Shoppe is Black Tea. Can't wait to see what effect a good White Tea would have!
  22. Yes. Tachycardia combined with some degree A-V block would do it. Or shirtless Darien Fawkes, YMMV....
  23. What Are You Watching?

I think it's the one word version, but that's just through osmosis via repeated exposure. I went to see Dr. Strange in 3D today, with a group of Mensans. We went to a Chinese restaurant afterwards. Movie was very good, effects were amazing but the script was a match to them. Food and conversation after were both good, too. :-)
  24. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

Seconded. From your link, "Almost all CML patients respond to treatment with imatinib, and most of these responses seem to last for many years....Common side effects....are generally mild." That sounds encouraging!
  25. Things You Find Amusing

Best Lion King parody I've seen since the Cthulhu Fthagan one Tom Smith and Luke Ski did.
