  1. 2/10/18 - Game Night Wallpaper

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com While I always strive to update my comic every single week, I tend to put some other aspects of my website on the back burner. No, I'm not talking about the Links pages - although I definitely AM working on adding some new sites to my Links - I mean my downloadable wallpapers. I find this particularly embarassing because most of my wallpapers have been prizes for my Annual Birthday Fan Art contest, and I tend to wait until the next contest comes around before I actually get around to creating the prize for the previous year. To be fair, it's usually because I try not to do too many filler updates in a row anymore, and I tend to have a few fillers around my birthday, but I still feel bad that I tend to make my contest winners wait. But that's in the past... Last year's winner has done enough waiting! CD Rudd, creator of SailorSun.Org (Check out my Links page for his site, along with a full description!), requested that I draw my characters doing whatever it is they do in their spare time. I decided that they do the same thing my friends and I do when we get together: eat pizza and play video games! I wanted to make sure all the characters looked interesting and dynamic; usually when you're playing games with friends, you're all sitting in the couch, controller in hand, and that's it. I decided to give everyone a different pose and a different controller (If Nintendo can make multiple controllers for a single console, so can I). Cannon - or rather, Dave - may not be wearing his big, clunky armor, but he does have a controller based off the N64 controller, but with his armor's color scheme (I'll bet it's one of those see-through controllers that I wish they still made. Also, Dave would totally rule at Mario Party, since his prosthetic hand can't get blisters from the Tug-of-War minigame). His pose is the most aggressive - albeit comedically so - of the three, which fits his personality quite well. Max may not be in his full Belt Boy gear, but he still wears his goggles (which just look cool) and his belt to help him snack without distractions (And yes, the design on his cup is based on a famous paper cup design, but with Belt Boy's uniform's red and blue hues). Max is holding a controller reminiscent of the classic SNES controller, even with its classic color scheme (The SNES was always one of my favorite consoles). Tiffany doesn't wear an outfit as Titanium Maiden; she just takes on the name, so she doesn't really have any costume change. The controllers are based of the Wii nunchucks, except they're two joined remotes without a joystick (and their color-scheme is based off another pizza-eating hero who uses nunchucks!), which shows off Tiffany's impressive biceps rather nicely. I've put some work into this background: look closely and you may notice that a photo in a wall frame offers a subtle homage to CD Rudd's comic (Those figures look a lot like Bay and Honey...), and that Tiffany forgot to use the wrist straps the first time they played. The gaming console looks like a GameCube and Wii mashed together, with dual cartridge slots on top reminiscent of one of those non-official consoles that are designed to play both NES and SNES games. I call this console the PlayTend Box 90 (Because it forms a 90-degree angle). I didn't intend for this to be any character's specific living room, but in hindsight, it does have Cannon's purple-and-green color scheme, so maybe this is at his house. This is my first wallpaper designed with phones/tablets in mind, which is why I centered the characters to appear on the screen even if the image is cropped. Still, I like how the scene looks as a whole, so I think it looks best on a tablet, or even centered on your PC. I hope you all enjoy it, especially you, CD (Sorry again for the long wait; I hope it was worth it)!
  2. Christmas 2017 Filler - 12/23/17

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com It's been a rough year for our country. A large number of us have been calling, protesting, and fighting for human rights in the face of greed and bigotry. It can get emotionally and even physically taxing. Between that and the typical holiday chaos, it's easy to wonder what's the point? Why bother? Does anything I do really matter? Well, despite a recent defeat regarding a certain tax bill, I still believe YES. Yes, it DOES matter what you do. While the words of Jacob Marley's ghost in today's filler may seem grim, in the context of the picture, I feel that it serves as an important reminder. While we are alive, we should do all that we can to help others and spread happiness. Joy is infectious; when you spread it around, you can feel it yourself. While you may not be able to change the world, the changes you CAN bring about can mean the world to one person... maybe two, including you! Meanwhile, those who fail to help others and think only of themselves are probably gonna discover karma laying the smackdown on them, in this life or the next (Okay, perhaps that's a little less "peace-and-love-y" than most of my Christmas messages, but I'm sure that thought comforts a few of you)! Anyway, if you're still willing to help out those in need, I recommend contacting your representatives every day. There's lots of great causes to fight for; if you like my comic and other webcomics, you should try showing your support for Net Neutrality. Tell the House and Senate to use a Resolution of Disapproval (under the CRA) to overturn the FCC's decision to repeal Net Neutrality laws! You might also want to help out by donating to a charity or a food bank that supports those hit by this year's hurricanes. If you want a suggestion, FeedingAmerica.org seems to be a well-reputed charity that's aiding in the relief efforts, and even a small $1 donation will be a big help. Anyway, today's comic took me all week to figure out. I knew I wanted to use this quote - I felt like it expressed justice during a time when a lot of people are losing faith in justice. However, I didn't want the shadenfreude of bad people being punished to overshadow the message that it's important to be kind to one another. Like the story of A Christmas Carol itself, there needed to be a good balance between the light and dark. Some earlier ideas felt too dark to me - like having ghostly politicians wearing Marley-style chains, or my characters posing as the Ghosts of Christmas Past/Present/Future to pester politicians. Ultimately, I felt that the picture should show my characters exemplifying the notion that charity and generosity is everyone's business, rather than bemoaning it too late like Marley, so I put my characters in a food pantry (much like my family and I volunteer at a homeless shelter every Christmas morning to serve food at a luncheon and do crafts and drawings with the children). I still felt that there needed to be a little jab at those who think only of themselves and merely pretend to be generous (That is a big issue going on right now, and I felt that I had to address it), so I put in the politician. It's no coincidence that the senator is under the quote about the consequences of selfishness, while my heroes are stationed beneath the words about giving to others. My fellow Pennsylvanians might have noticed that Senator Nat Tooman is a parody of Senator Pat Toomey - my state's Republican senator who's been pushing the tax bill, praising Trump's nominees (most notably Betsy DeVos, whose family contributed to his campaign), and opposing Net Neutrality. I was considering making the parody character's last name "Toomer", because like a tumor, he's malignant and should be removed, but I think I might save that joke for some protest signs. The name "Nat Tooman" sounds a lot like "Not Human", stressing his lack of humanity. Y'know, I might find a place for this guy in a future storyline at some point...! Anyway, here's hoping that whatever you celebrate - whether it's Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or just having a quiet winter's day - that you have a happy holiday season! Take care, everyone!
  3. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Cannon and Gelatin Boy apologize, and Cannon channels his inner Jedi. Here, we can see how Cannon and Gelatin Boy are a bit similar. However, they both use wisecracks differently. Cannon's sarcasm is always "on", and usually directed at others, which makes him feel better about his own insecurities. Conversely, Geltin Boy tends to aim his sarcasm directly at his own insecurities, as well as situations that make him nervous. Here, Gelatin Boy's doing something rare; using a quip in a positive way by lightening the mood. Perhaps he still has a little nervousness or snark in his system left over from the last two strips. While Cannon could learn a thing or two about being introspective from Gelatin Boy, Gelatin Boy could learn about how to use his sarcasm against someone besides himself. I guess they could both play the roles of "master" and "apprentice" (I thought this commentary needed one more Star Wars reference!).
  4. Comic 11/25/17 - Saw-REE!

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Today's comic is rather surprising! We see a rare moment of courage from Gelatin Boy, followed by a rare moment of introspection from Cannon! Anything could happen now! But what IS going to happen will need to wait until next week...! By the way, I do plan on doing story comics this week and the next three, up until the 23rd, when I'll do my annual Christmas filler *Knock on wood*. I know that the last month was bogged down with quite a few fillers, between the Halloween two-parter, Election Day, and Thanksgiving, and I'm itching to continue this story. Gelatin Boy and Cannon's actions, as I mentioned, are a bit surprising, but not entirely out-of-character for them. GB may not be as snarky as Cannon, but he's definitely more negative. Usually, he's down on himself, but his outlook on most things is pretty pessimistic. While he's frustrated with a lot of people right now, he's not willing to stand up to most of them. There's no way he's standing up to Jackknife because he's a bully. He doesn't want to stand up to his friends, because he doesn't want them to be upset at him. Cannon, on the other hand, is a classmate with whom he has had limited interactions with so far, and he's pretty sure Cannon - despite his attitude - wouldn't attack him like Jackknife would, so he sees no downside to lashing out at Cannon. Cannon tends to be very protective of his ego (I intentionally designed him with bulky armor over his skinny physique as a metaphor for that, in fact!). He talks himself up a lot (especially around the ladies), and is quick to aim sarcasm or blame at others. He also hates bringing up a lot of issues regarding his past, specifically those surrounding his lost hand (Which he's very sensitive about people seeing). However, he's also very loyal and protective of his best friend. It seems that when his ego, his past, and his loyalty collide, loyalty comes out on top.
  5. Comic 11/11/7 - A Whole Peg!

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Gelatin Boy gives Cannon some sass! Has GB grown a spine? Does he even have a spine? I guess he could just have a gelatinous one that we can't see because the rest of him is gelatinous, but it's hard to say... Anyway, enjoy this comic (And yes, the title is a Simpsons reference)! Long before I started my own comic, I read others' comics. Probably the first comics that I read were the ones in the Sunday newspaper, and one of the first newspaper comics I read was On The Fastrack, a comic about a bunch of people working at an office. That strip continues to this day - but the cast has changed a bit, and it now focuses on Dethany, an upbeat goth (as oxymoronic as that sounds) who maintains her individuality and positivity in a corporate atmosphere. An animated version of her now does Q&A videos on YouTube, answering fans questions. Why do I bring this up? Because in this month's video, Dethany answered a question from yours truly (Although, if you've been keeping up with my comic updates, you already knew that)! Crediting me as "The Heroes of C.R.A.S.H.", she answers my question as to to what her powers and costume would be if she were a superheroine! You can check out On The Fastrack for yourself through my Links page, and you can see the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBCBSQW2XTg By the way, I want to thank everyone who read my recent Election Day filler and decided to vote. But the fight against injustice isn't over: we need to stay politically active! Stay informed on what bills are being voted on, and watch how your representatives vote. You can call your representatives' offices, send letters or faxes by texting ResistBot on your phone, and even use GoogleMaps to locate their offices and rate/review them like a business!
  6. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Not much to say about Part 2 that I haven't said about Part 1. I suppose I could mention that most of the junk food buffet that's been eaten was munched by Titanium Maiden. Her amazonian physique burns a lot of calories easily, leaving her with a need for a lot of food. She gets a little self-conscious about this, though, so she usually eats a big breakfast and a big lunch, so she can eat a relatively normal-sized meal for lunch while she's at school. You may have noticed that I haven't been posting my Inktober drawings to social media lately; I've gotten a bit behind, so I'm trying to do a bunch of drawings to make up for lost time. I'll be posting them soon! Anyway, I hope you all have a happy and safe Halloween! Be careful, have fun, and don't sue me. This filler is fan-art only, like I said.
  7. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com It's that time of year again...! Halloween is here, and my heroes are in costume. For the first time in a while, I'm just drawing my main three. Getting back to basics. Making it a two-parter was partly out of necessity; I've been busy with job stuff and trying to crank out quality Inktober drawings (I've gotten a bit behind; I'll try to catch up during the weekend!), so I've had less time to devote to my comic than usual this week. So, I decided to begin the Halloween filler a bit early, and split it up between my 10/21 and 10/28 updates. As usual, my characters tend to follow certain themes while deciding their costumes. Belt Boy always dresses as a superhero, but has yet to wear a single DC or Marvel costume. Cannon always wears a costume that allows him to modify his helmet (He has spares). And Titanium Maiden always dresses up as a redhead. With the new anime My Hero Academia gaining popularity, I took notice. One character, named All Might, appears to be a perfect costume for Belt Boy. They're both blonde, often shown grinning heroically (and both often do so to hide their weaknesses), and wear an all-American red, white, and blue color scheme as a nod to many famous American superheroes (such as Superman, Captain America, and Wonder Woman, among others). Only thing All Might is missing is an awesome cape. Belt Boy always pulls off superhero poses, and I thought that showing off his specialized entertainment center remote deserved such a pose, especially in his super costume. Cannon is dressed as Shovel Knight from the video game of the same name (A game I own, but have yet to beat. I highly recommend it, though). As a major consumer of nerdy media, it's no surprise Cannon would dress as a video game hero, nor is it a surprise that he's amassed such a huge Halloween video collection and organized it. For the record, the two musical movies he's referring to are Rocky Horror Picture Show and Little Shop of Horrors (Unless I missed any good Halloween-appropriate musicals?*). While I watch a lot of Halloweeny movies this time of year, Cannon can probably stand much scarier movies than I can. Most of what I watch this time of year is animated (Like Nightmare Before Christmas... which I guess counts as a musical too. Maybe he categorizes the animated musicals seperately...?) or a spooky comedy (Like Ghostbusters). You won't catch me watching something like Nightmare on Elm Street; that movie scared the crap out of me when I was a young and impressionable.** Titanium Maiden's costume is a bit esoteric. While looking up redheaded characters to dress her as, I found a picture of a bunch of redheaded Disney characters, and in there was Pepper Ann. That seemed like a good, nostalgic fit for her costume, so I did a google image search, and found an image of Pepper Ann's superhero alter-ego from the dream sequence in her opening theme montage. This version of Pepper Ann seemed like an even better fit for Titanium Maiden, mainly due to her physique being a darn good match for my comic's heroine. So here's Titanium Maiden as "Super" Pepper Ann. By the way, a good number of those pizzas are for TM; while she tends to eat normal-sized lunches, her Amazonia physique burns a lot of calories, so she eats some sizeable breakfasts and dinners. Anyway, expect part two next week, readers! See you then! All Might and My Hero Academia are the copyrighted property of Kohei Horikoshi/SHUEISHA Inc. Shovel Knight is the copyrighted property of Yacht Club games. Pepper Ann is the copyrighted property of Disney. I only did the art, and I own Belt Boy, Cannon, and Titanium Maiden, as well as The Heroes of C.R.A.S.H. Please don't sue me. *A side note: Cannon's not a big fan of opera, so don't bother mentioning The Phantom of the Opera or Repo! the Genetic Opera. ** I was around 20 at the time.
  8. Comic 10/14/17 - Snowball's Chance

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Still trying to regain access to my site. Between work, my comic, and Inktober, I haven't had much time to fix the problem, but I'm working on it. At least I can still post on social media, and I have some time freed up this weekend *Knock on wood*. *UPDATE* My site is updateable again! I spoke with my webhosting call center and got things taken care of. This week's comic and last week's comic are on the site right now. :-) Anyway, in today's comic, Belt Boy's friends continue their search, unaware that he's a good distance away from the school, with Necros gloating over him. Will they find him? Stay tuned, readers! You might look at the next-to-last panel and think that Necros' Necrobots are behind him. You might look and think that the shadow is Belt Boy imagining the Nightmare Necros he saw in his bad dream from the previous night. Well, it's honestly kinda both. Those are, indeed, Necros' Necrobots (the shape lacks Necros' eye scar, and the neck and head don't look all skeletal), but it is supposed to remind you of Nightmare Necros. Quite the spooky coincidence for Belt Boy!
  9. theheroesofcrash.com I'm back from a fun birthday weekend, and so instead of my usual Saturday Morning update, we have a bit of a "Sunday Night Special"! I proudly present the winning entry - or rather, entries - to my Fan Art Contest's Traditional Fan Art category! CD Rudd, creator of the webcomic SailorSun.Org, has done a bit of a crossover (and not the first one!) between my cast and his! What would happen if Belt Boy, Cannon, and Titanium Maiden were to hang out with Honey, Bay, and Auction Guy (respectively)? By the way, Bay has nothing to worry about; Belt Boy is, indeed, only pointing a camera at her. He is in full control of any weapons on his belt, and he's too innocent to even consider anything else she might be suggesting (This IS a PG-rated comic, after all!). You can see his individual drawings on my website, and you can see a link to his webcomic (with a brief discription) over at my Links page! For winning the contest, CD Rudd has won the right to choose the subject of the next HoC Desktop, and I'll be sending him a little sketch in the very near future. Also receiving a sketch soon will be devoted HoC fan TheSlugCar, for his creative "BonnieBot" entry (Which answers the question "What would happen if B.O.N.N.I.E. downloaded her brain into a MON-type Necrobot?"). Thanks for the awesome fan art, guys! This was a great birthday! :-D One last thing: Due to a lack of entries, the Generated Fan Art Contest has been extended! If you submit a video game avatar that resembles one of my characters by 11:59 PM (EST) on Friday, May 26th, your entry will still be considered for the contest! You could win a sketch, or I could create a cool drawing based on your entry to be publicly displayed on the site! Whether it's a Mii or a Sim or whatever, you have almost a week to make it!
  10. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Titanium Maiden seems to be sorting out the best way to keep everyone under control as they search for Belt Boy. Cannon seems to be abnormally concise in his speech. And Jackknife appears to be the obnoxious pain in the butt that he usually is. Will these groupings work out? Will they find Belt Boy before he flips out or gets clobbered by Necrobots (or both)? Stay tuned! In today's strip, Titanium Maiden is showing off one of her best qualities: she can be level-headed when everyone is freaking out. Of course, when it comes to personal problems, her anxiety comes out to party. Both of these aspects of her personality come from me... it always seems easier to calmly deal with other people's problems than with your own. Cannon's usually shooting off his mouth even more often than his weapon, but surprisingly, he's only got one word to say in today's comic. Between this and his revealing his missing hand, Cannon's acting awful uncharacteristic of his usual self. This is because Cannon has two traits that occasionally conflict with each other: his self-centeredness and his loyalty to his best friend, Belt Boy. Right now, his concern for his friend has overridden his need to make snarky one-liners, and most of his sensitivity regarding his hand. Until he knows BB is safe or until he feels a need to defend himself, Cannon's probably going to be stuck in this mode. I think that Unk and Jackknife make an unusual pair. Jackknife has all of Cannon's obnoxiousness, but none of his charm or moments of selflessness. It makes you wonder why a nice guy like Unk hangs around him at all. While it's not evident whether Jackknife sees Unk as a friend, a sidekick, or a lackey (or some combination of the three), Unk is generally the easygoing type who will put up with a lot. I think to some extent, he listens to Jackknife just because no one else will, and Unk knows how it feels to never be listened to.
  11. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Cannon and Titanium Maiden rarely see eye-to-eye, let alone get the same idea without having to say anything, so this is an unusual situation indeed. I was going to show the flow chart with the words "mad" and "afraid" on each arrow, but it didn't look right. I was also considering making the "afraid" icons purple, like Fear in the movie Inside-Out, but yellow seemed better for this picture. I really love how Titanium Maiden's poses look in this comic. I think I got her physique looking better than usual; sometimes arms are tricky, especially around the elbows. I also love the facial expressions she's making, particularly in the last panel. Although if she closed her eyes, you'd think she was mimicking an Emperor's New Groove meme.
  12. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Seems that Belt Boy's grade is more serious than his friends thought. And you can tell that Cannon's being serious because of what he's drawing attention to. Can Cannon - with the help of the other heroes - save his best friend from having a meltdown and/or getting his butt kicked by Necrobots? What is the mysterious accident that befell Cannon? Will Jackknife manage to not be a total pain in the butt? Stay tuned for the answers to these questions and many more, readers! Belt Boy's situation is based on a personal issue I had back in school. When I was in elementary school, I always got good grades pretty easily (Outside of "timed tests" in math, where you had to do as many simple math problems as you could in one minute. That took some practice.). But when I went to junior high school, I found myself being really challenged for the first time. There was a lot more information to read, especially in science and social studies, and it didn't always stick in my head so effortlessly. This was the first time school REALLY started to stress me out. Being the genius type, Belt Boy absorbs knowledge as easily as I did back in elementary school, so if his grades slip, you can tell his head's not totally in the game. We haven't seen much of Cannon's right arm stump throughout the series - pretty much just a brief scene in the storyline The Dating Scheme. Between that and a brief mention in The Obligatory Origin Story Flashback, it's apparent that Cannon doesn't like to talk much about his missing hand, so if he's drawing attention to it - especially in front of his hated rival, Jackknife - he must be MAJORLY worried about Belt Boy. Still, he's sensitive enough about it to make sure everyone knows not to bring it up. I tried to make sure that the other characters' reactions in the final panel showed off what kind of characters they are. Jackknife is a superficial jerk, so he's weirded out by Cannon's arm stump. Titanium Maiden stands rigidly, trying to not make any movements or facial expressions Cannon might find offensive when he's being this personal. And Gelatin Boy may be one flavor of gelatin, but he's 31 flavors of awkward, so he's not as good at playing it cool. Originally, Sugar Rush was going to be the the third hero instead of Gelatin Boy, and she was just going to say, "Nope!". But because of how everyone was standing in the last strip, I decided to use the next person in "line": Gelatin Boy. I wound up changing GB's line from "Nope!" to "What missing hand?" at the last minute before saving this comic; I felt it fit his personality better and let us go out on a small joke that doesn't undermine the feeling of awkwardness and tension that permeates the final panel. Also, Cannon's head pose in this panel was totally inspired by the Peanuts characters, whose movie I was watching while working on this. I'm feeling pretty tired, as I pulled an all-nighter following a busy week in order to finish today's comic on time, so I'm gonna hit the hay. Or at least fall asleep with my finger on the Z key of my keyboard. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
  13. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Seems Belt Boy's definition of "doing poorly" on a quiz is not the same as everyone else's. But Cannon seems genuinely worried - why is that...? Stay tuned, readers! I could have had them all say, "WHAT?!?", but I felt that just using a period conveyed their annoyed tone of voice better. Much as I love making exaggerated, toony characters, I also love understatement. While I posted about these guys on some of my social media accounts already, I once again would like to acknowledge all the people I met at Lehigh Valley Comic Con, and hope that you'll check out their websites and social media pages. So here they are again: - John from Frugal Mule Games, from whom I got a fun caveman-themed card/dice game called "Stoned". I also understand they have pirate- and space-themed variants coming out, so keep your eyes peeled! - Super Comic (Official), whose superhero comic I totally want to get next time (Or maybe even online); for now, I got one of their neat figurines of their main character, Blitz. She's on a team of young, inexperienced superheroes trying to make a name for themselves. Gee, I wonder why I find THAT so interesting...? *Knowing wink!* - Artist Joseph Wigfield of WhatWouldWigDraw.com, who - to answer the question his URL poses - draws a lot of things, but is particularly known for drawing superheroes as pugs. Because pugs are awesome, adorable little furry meatballs, and putting them in comic art instantly makes them better. - Artist D Forrest Fox, who has made a lot of cool art prints. My personal favorites include ones based on the Rankin-Bass holiday specials: I've got my eye on the Miser Brothers; that would be a great picture to hang up around the holidays (And everyone knows I'm a festive fanatic every December 1st!) - Artist Darren Auck, who's worked on many a comic book for big name companies. I particularly like his work on Nickelodeon properties - specifically Rocko's Modern Life and Ren & Stimpy! - Artist David Bancroft of DMBillustrations.com, who does some rather pretty prints, sketches, and portraits! He's also self-published the zombie coloring book, "The Coloring Dead", for my friends who like zombies.
  14. 8/5/17 - Working on Networking

TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Despite the fact that I've still been having a few computer issues and more than a few thunderstorms keeping me from working on my computer for long periods of time, I haven't been slacking off with my comic. In fact, I'm working on promoting it so that I can reach a wider audience! First of all, in addition to the Facebook group, I have now given The Heroes Of C.R.A.S.H. a proper Facebook page (Admittedly, when I was starting out, I wasn't really sure of the difference between the two), which you can visit by clicking the Social Media button on my site's home page. Second, if you've been following my Facebook group, I'm going to be attending the Lehigh Valley Comic Con today! It's been a while since I've been to a small convention, and while the big ones like Wizard World are a lot of fun, I love how small cons are more relaxed and less crowded, so I'm looking forward to it. Third, while I'm there, I'm going to be handing out some sweet new business cards that look like what I've posted today, with some additional info on the back. If you are reading this AFTER Saturday, August 5th because you saw my Facebook page or got one of my cards at the convention, WELCOME! I hope you enjoy my comic, and that you'll visit my Social Media links to spread the word about how much you enjoy it!
  15. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Seems that Cannon, of all people, has stumbled onto Belt Boy's secret...! What grade or comment is on that test? What will he do with this information? Is "Sweet and sour dipping sauce" a good exclamation? Stay tuned, everyone? While I'm trying to do better with drawing anatomy, I try to balance it out with style. In panel two, I let Gelatin Boy get a little off-model to showcase his rubbery-ness. He is made of gelatin, after all, so I tend to have a bit more fun with "squash and stretch" on him than any other character in the comic. I love the fourth panel. The lighting, Cannon's facial expression, and (as I have often used in the past), those tiny words in a large word balloon to indicate a hushed, yet anxious tone. I wanted to give him some exclamation to say, and I knew it had to start with "Sweet" (Like any exclamation spoken by Hermes from Futurama). The first thing that popped into my mind was "sweet and sour dipping sauce", and so it went from there. I can't help but wonder if my idea was subconsciously inspired by Gravity Falls' Dipper "Lord Dippingsauce" Pines.
  16. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Not much to say that I haven't said in today's filler. Keep following me on social media to stay posted with everything that's going on with me and with the comic; if I'm ever unable to post to the site, I'll let you know what's going on through Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook. Speaking of the interwebs, if you haven't done so already, please contact your representatives as well as the FCC and tell them to keep Title II and Net Neutrality. Otherwise, my webcomic, every webcomic, and just about anything that people create on the 'net could be in danger. Do your part to protect freedom of speech!
  17. Comic 7/8/17 - Strong Silent Types

http://TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Seems that there's still plenty of arguing amongst Belt Boy's friends back at C.R.A.S.H., all of them unaware that their friend is in danger. Will they be able to settle their differences? Will they focus their anger on Belt Boy after those promises he made? Will Titanium Maiden get some aspirin for that headache she's clearly getting? The answers to these questions and more will be coming soon, so stay tuned! At one point, I considered having Gelatin Boy interject in Comic #670's argument between his teammates, asking if he had any say in the matter and his friends all shouting "NO!" at him. However, that didn't seem entirely in character for him; he's still the type to avoid confrontation, be it among friends or foes. I keep needing to remind myself to draw Enticia's earrings whenever I draw her. It's a little detail that I don't always think about. I'm sure someone could browse through my archives and play "Spot the Missing Earring", searching for panels where I accidentally drew her without it. I believe I skipped the earring throughout the Gym-Nauseum storyline, but to be fair, I think she would take them off when going to the gym. The title of today's strip refers to both Unk and Titanium Maiden. I enjoy subverting tropes and cliches - neither of my super-muscular characters are stereotypical "muscleheads", nor are they brutes. Unk is fairly quiet and zen, while Titanium Maiden has had (and still has) quite a bit of shyness and awkwardness to overcome.
  18. TheHeroesOfCRASH.com As the title suggests, Belt Boy may not be near the proverbial frying pan, but he's definitely in the fire. An awkward argument between friends is nowhere near as tense as a battle for your life! I'm pretty happy with how the last panel turned out. The only thing I wonder if I should have done differently is skip the red/green coloring. You'll notice that Necros, once again, has the evil shade of lime green by his face, while BB counters it with red. There's but ONE WEEK LEFT to enter my birthday fan art contest! I'll be posting the winning entry a day late, since I'll be engaging in some birthday festivities that will have me away from my computer. If you want to enter, do it by 11:59 PM on May 19th! Check out the Rules page for more info!
  19. Comic 4/29/17 - "You" Times Two, "Eep" Times Three(p) TheHeroesOfCRASH.com Just to be clear, I'm counting last week's strip, so Dino-Mo has dramatically shouted "YOU!" twice in a row, eliciting an "Eep" from Enticia, Dodge, and Sugar Rush, hence the title. I'm still working on the next storyline, but I'm hoping that I can keep the number of characters small. These big group shots are a pain in the tuchus, especially when working with a limited number of frames. Granted, this is a webcomic; I could always add more frames. But I would like to print these out in an actual comic, and so in more recent years, I've been doing my best to keep the format consistent. I really like Dino-Mo's speech bubble in the last frame. While this is a bit of deja vu from the previous comic, Dino-Mo is getting angrier and angrier, so her firey speech balloon from the last strip is now burnt and crispy. By the way folks, DON'T FORGET ABOUT MY CONTEST! It ends May 19th, and EVERYONE WHO ENTERS GETS A PRIZE!!! Click the button on my site's main page for rules and details!
  20. theheroesofcrash.com Awkward moment alert! Dino-Mo's typically fairly laid back, but if you threaten her teammates, you're pushing her buttons, and she's a bit more likely to hold a grudge. Enticia's already on her bad side, and it looks like Belt Boy's getting there, too! The first panel is a bit of a callback to the 7/3/07 strip, in which Cannon falls out of the school upon leaving the front doors. I know it's not practical for a school to float in the air, but I still like the effect, and it seems that any superhero should be able to reach a door a mere twelve feet in the air. Getting down, apparently, is harder... unless you have wings, or the strength to pull of a "superhero landing". Hey, just reminding you that there's still a month left in my contest, and EVERYONE who enters gets a prize! Just in case you forgot...
  21. theheroesofcrash.com One of my favorite website traditions is the annual April Fools' Day filler. I'm not big on practical jokes, myself... but Cannon sure is, which is why he pranks a character from someone else's webcomic every year! This year's target is the Happy Homemaker - a supervillainess bent on taking away her fellow woman's choice to have a career. Her arch-nemesis is the feminist superheroine Gyno-Star, who appears in the last panel. If you want to read a feminist webcomic whose wit and flawed heroes are reminiscent of one of the GOOD seasons of The Simpsons, then check out The Adventures of Gyno-Star via my Links page! Many thanks to the talented Rebecca Cohen for letting me borrow her characters! Last year, I had considered having Cannon play a prank on Gyno-Star, but I couldn't think of a practical joke that was clever enough. I like to make Cannon's pranks take advantage of the target's attributes, or at least be poetic in some way. While Gyno-Star does have a few character flaws (she can be a bit vain or self-absorbed at times), I didn't feel like Cannon's pranks could take full advantage of that, and I felt that it wouldn't be right for Cannon to play a prank that mocked Gyno-Star's feminist ideals (That's the sort of thing that Gyno-Star's villains would do). This year, I considered Gyno-Star again, but then I thought it would be fun for him to prank one of Gyno-Star's villains, and playing this joke on the Happy Homemaker just sprang to mind. I have to be honest, Happy Homemaker looks kinda like an evil version of my own mom in that first panel. But I suppose that she is, essentially, an evil mom, having unsuccessfully attempted to rebrand herself as "The Stay-At-Home-Mom". I had fun drawing her retro 1950s look, which seems to work well with my drawing style (Which was partially inspired by retro-style cartoons). Sharp-eyed viewers might notice that one picture frame reads "Lair Sweet Lair" (although it's partly obscured by a text balloon). I liked that gag, as well as "Out Darn Spot" (If that's not the name of a cleaning product, it should be!). Drawing this comic was a lot of fun, which probably made it easier to stay focused and complete it in record time (I submitted it to Rebecca Cohen for approval before posting it). I consider it an honor that she liked the concept when I first proposed it, and an even greater honor that she liked the finished product! :-D I do like making fan art, but if you want to let me know how much you like MY characters, don't forget that I still have my annual Fan Art Contest going on! You can click the "Contest Rules an' Stuff" button on my main page in order to read the rules in FULL detail. Be aware that I've tweaked the contest this year, and now EVERYONE is guaranteed a prize! So click that button for all the specific details, and have fun entering!
  22. Filler 12/24/16 - A Christmas Wish

theheroesofcrash.com Well, folks, at the time that I'm typing this, it's in the wee small hours of the morning on Christmas Eve! By sundown it'll be Chanukkah, by tomorrow it'll be Christmas, and the day after that is Kwanzaa! There's so many wonderful holidays this weekend, and - especially in times like these where there's a lot of outspoken hatred and prejudice - it's important that we take the time to celebrate and appreciate both what makes us different AND what we share in common. We all have different, beautiful ways of celebrating the same values of love and goodwill towards others, and we should do our best to show that throughout the year. So whether you celebrate none, one, or many of the holidays occurring this December, know that I wish you a happy and safe holiday season. I know I've had Muppets on the brain a bit lately (You've seen my Daily Drawings, right?), but I honestly thought that this quote was a good one to use; despite being from a Christmas song, it reaches out to people of all faiths. Jim Henson was a man who appreciated diversity and sought to give people an idea of what a peaceful world could be like through educational shows like Sesame Street or the social commentary of Fraggle Rock, so it seems more than appropriate to use his words for this filler. Wishing you all Happy Holidays! Canonical comics return in January! :-)
  23. Comic 11/5/16 - The Hurt Ego Locker

theheroesofcrash.com Seems Belt Boy can't bury his metaphorical demons under activities... or under all the junk in his locker. The third panel was originally going to look a bit different; the shadow on the wall would have cracks in it in the section near BB's head. However, that spot was the only place where his thought balloon looked right, so I decided to nix the representational imagery.
  24. theheroesofcrash.com Today's comic shows that Belt Boy always has a plan, TM has a forgiving temperament, and Cannon has a sweet tooth (a bit like his real-life counterpart). Belt Boy (as well as the other members of my comic's main trio) is largely based off me, so we share a lot of qualities. One way in which we differ is that I would probably be blurting out apology after apology in a situation like this, whereas BB sees any mistake as a temporary setback that he can fix... especially when he's in "perfectionist mode". Guess the title of today's comic is a bit ironic, as he never officially apologizes in this strip.
  25. theheroesofcrash.com Seems that Cannon and Titanium Maiden are displeased with their fearless - or rather, clueless - leader. Has he bitten off more than his team can chew? Is that a weird metaphor if one person's biting and three people are chewing? And has Cannon ever had a hot date? Stay tuned for the next installment for the answers to none of these questions! I love understatement being used to convey humor, which is probably why I love having my characters not getting explicitly angry and just speaking iciliy, indicated by my word balloons with icicles on them. Decided to try a different tool today to draw the icicles on this time around... what do you think of 'em?
