While I'm aware that it means something besides a fraction, I always mentally correct that to “1.”

Many matches are 2/2. 

If your tempo  has even numbers that simplify ito 1 or 1/2, it's probably marchable. 

3/4 time is waltzable.

Yes—you can march to anything which goes one-two or one-two-three-four, but not so easily to something which goes one-two-three.
