      Welcome!   03/05/2016

Welcome, everyone, to the new 910CMX Community Forums. I'm still working on getting them running, so things may change.  If you're a 910 Comic creator and need your forum recreated, let me know and I'll get on it right away.  I'll do my best to make this new place as fun as the last one!

Is EGS:NP becoming too important?

Oh Lord yes. I still remember the idiotic flap when someone was screaming about an entire storyline being "trapped in the basement." I later counted the length of the so-called 'trapped in the basement' incident and found that it was a total of thirteen pages long, of which two pages took place in a different place with different characters. The problem was that in real time this took more than a month, in part because of Dan not releasing as regularly as usual at the time. I guess that made it seem like eternity to some. *sighs*

If there's a page every MWF, then one month is at least 12 pages (most Februaries), usually 13 pages (most other months, plus a February about once every ten years on average - leap years where February begins on a comic-release day), and, twice a year on average, 14 pages (a 31-day month beginning on Monday or Wednesday).

It doesn't take much to make 13 pages take more than a month.

Yes. In this case, it resulted in a regular poster here to name a snippet of a storyline "Trapped in the Basement." The actual numbers kind of make me consider that an overreaction. I might have thought less about it if he hadn't also been so negative about it and constantly complained about the 'abysmal pacing' it showed. *sighs*

A planet in the Dragon Ball universe.

And the scene of a story arc that was reasonably paced in the comic but got stretched to a ridiculous length in the anime with filler and episodes where nearly nothing happened.

To elaborate on the reference, in the twenty-second episode of the third season of Dragonball Z, the villain Frieza detonates the planet Namek's core, which will cause the planet to explode "in exactly five minutes". It subsequently takes until episode thirty-one for the explosion to actually happen. That's right--the five minutes takes so long in the show that eight full episodes can begin and end in the time between. This sequence has basically become the poster child for slow-moving plots.

It also led to this joke in the abridged series (12:47 to 13:00, if it doesn't skip ahead properly)

DBZ: 5 minutes of high-octane action packed into 22 minutes of recaps and coming attractions....

For those without the attention span for DBZ Abriged, there's also DBZ Abriged Abriged, which covers the entire Namek plotline in under 7 minutes...

Dan can recap anything. It's one of the main features of his comic: worst case scenario, we can have an old school exposition dump like back during the early Grace v Damien bits.

I see EGS:NP as the Marvel Netflix Serieses to the main comics' Marvel Cinematic Universe: while it might potentially cross over (ignore that the analogy no longer works since they've separated things in MarvelTV to the point where they cannot crossover), it still has roots in the main story from which it buds off from.

Things introduced in NP are either inconsequential to the main story or would break the narrative flow to introduce at the time they occur.

(of course, this would mean the Q&A segments ought to be in NP, but since they use large spreads for illustration that doesn't fit since it'd no longer be Newspaper-Style. So Blargle.)

I don't know... that used to be the case, but around the time the comic explained Sarah's power in NP I have to say it started to remind me of Infinite Jest.

Nope, they just spend too much time on video games, of which I have limited interest in.  I understand that YMMV on this, and obviously, based on the number of VG related posts in the reaction threads that a large number of y'all are interested in them.  Plus often the art is cute even if I don't know what the subject matter is.  As long as he avoids the two gamers on a couch syndrome all is cool.

Oh, and for the record, if I say in a reaction to a NP comic that I don't know what this, assume there is an ",and I don't care" following it, unless I say otherwise in the comment. I don't need all the under 28 set telling me the details, particularly if you do it via other VG.

Then maybe just don't comment on it?

What, do you need to be under 28 to enjoy video games or to want to help someone understand what the joke in the comic is based around them when someone expresses their lack of knowledge in it? ~rolls eyes~

Anyway, I like the fact that canon has leaked into NP. I remember when we were lucky to get a new page here and there, for years of real time, and in my opinion there can never be enough canon material for EGS. If it took over the Sketchbooks and the Pinups I wouldn't mind either.

Because there may be something other than the VG aspect of the comic, you know what the forum is about, that I feel like commenting on.

Under 28 is a mind set not an age.

Look! Is that a shiny round thing?
