Am I the only person here whose definition of a "argument" can include friendly exchanges, not just bad ones?  You give your argument on a point, then I give mine, then we back-and-forth about it,  As long as you don't start using fallacies like Straw Man or Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc, then a good argument can be quite enjoyable.

A "debate" is more formal, a "discussion" doesn't cover each taking and supporting a side the way argument does.

No. But not being native speaker, my opinion doesn't mean much.

To me, an argument looks like this:

customer.set(arg1);

:P

(But jokes aside, most people I know use "argument" for when a debate has gotten heated, soured, or otherwise caused harm or potential harm).

For what it is worth, I use 'argument' in that sense, too.

I've always used 'argument' as a synonym for 'dispute'. As I understand it an argument doesn't have to be emotionally charged, though it seems to be a common opinion. Besides debates has often enough devolved into screaming and fisticuffs...

Yeah. Take the Council of Nicaea for instance. A massive congregation of bishops to hammer out theological issues. Got rather heated at times, and even devolved into a brawl at one point.

Among other things, one rumor about that brawl during the Council of Nicea was that St. Nicholas of Myra (i.e. Santa Claus himself) personally grabbed the heretic Arius by the throat and choked him. (Arius was preaching that the Christ was a creation of God rather than being of one and the same nature as God.)
