Most FPS these days aren't good enough to be doom clones.

If (classic) DOOM is gold, and real doom clones (like, in an ironically literal sense, DOOM 2016) are silver, modern FPS games would be the 'thanks for trying' consolation prize you give the little league team that didn't even qualify. Modern FPS, especially Modern Military Shooters, are the "You somehow flubbed easy mode" of games compared to Classic FPS.
