      Welcome!   03/05/2016

Welcome, everyone, to the new 910CMX Community Forums. I'm still working on getting them running, so things may change.  If you're a 910 Comic creator and need your forum recreated, let me know and I'll get on it right away.  I'll do my best to make this new place as fun as the last one!

It's going to be a while before this is up and running again, since while I still have and use my notebook, it's been a while since I've updated it and I relied on the thread in the old forum to remind me of when I left off. I've heard rumors of an attempt at data recovery, but barring that I'll probably have to recount a lot of things to make sure I'm on track.

EDIT:

It occurs to me that the rules for appearances were in the original thread, which was deleted. Here are my criteria:

-On panel appearance (duh)

-Off panel dialogue

-Partial appearance. This one is iffy, but I usually require around 25% visibility (or a face) AND clarity as to who the character is. Said clarity must exist in the strip itself, not including context from previous strips. Rare exceptions have been made to the visibility requirement, such as when The Boar died and only its hoof was visible, but I generally stick pretty hard to it.

-Flashbacks and fantasy sequences count

-Recurring apparitions that are not real, such as Susan's personality aspects, are counted as "semi-characters"

-Characters with alter-egos (such as Elliot) receive credit for the appearances of those alter-egos, and the alter-egos themselves receive credit as semi-characters

-If two alter-egos appear in the same strip (like Cheerleadra and Heidi, say) they would both receive individual credit, but Elliot would only be counted once

-Different versions of the same character, like Zeus/Jerry, or any alternate universe versions like Beta Tedd or Second Life Ellen, are counted as separate characters

Good luck. Take all the time you need.

I would help if I could, since I actually took a marker of everyone's appearance numbers at one point recently on an Excel document. I don't know if I left the date on it though.

I remember falling way behind on the NP count too. I think I stopped in August and laziness kept me from going back. I hate being lazy, but I'm too lazy to do anything about it.

Anyway, lemme get caught up and I'll try and pick up where I left off. I don't have anything as elegant as an Excel document, but I kept all my notes.

If someone still has a copy still in their browser cache the #'s might be retrievable that way, I will check when I get home tonight not certain how long my computer will store pages for though..

How does one go about finding such files?

EDIT - Also: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://community.910cmx.com/index.php?/topic/12506-crazy-counting-guy/page-18

You can get results from as recent as March 13th 2015 here, but there's no more recent information available via these means.

Depends on your OS and browser. With windows I think they are normally found somewhere under C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData.

I do not know if it still works, but years and several OSes and browsers ago, I could also set my browser to offline mode, and key in the address and it would load the cached copy.

Truthfully, it has been so ling (like 10 years) since I had reason to try and read a cached copy of a page I do not know if it is even still possible on most browsers. I just know it was at one point.

@Wixelt I've preserved that further by backing up the Yahoo cache to archive.is so as to preserve it after Yahoo potentially deletes it.  http://archive.is/kxQSj

So from now on we'll have a clear record in case this sort of thing happens again, right?

@Wixelt Not sure what you mean.  archive.is is a single-page on-demand archiver (not to be confused with archive.org which usually comes and goes as it pleases, and seemed when I checked not to have satisfactorily preserved the original forum).  I merely archived the Yahoo cache of that singular page.

I meant as in it giving us a solid fallback point should any data be lost again.

This article is 8 years old but I imagine the process for recovering data from a damaged HDD hasn't changed much:

http://www.geek.com/chips/drivesavers-breathes-life-into-a-dead-drive-574764/

Seems like pricing and time are entirely dependent on the size of the drives, I dunno how many drives were involved in the crash or how big they were but if they had a lot of data on them, it could be time consuming and pricey to send them to a facility like that.

The whole "create a bit-for-bit image" part sounds like a very slow process.

That's brilliant! It means I'll still have to go back a little bit, but better a month or so than fourteen years. Thanks!

It's not a problem. It would be a shame to see all of your hard work go to waste.

Okay, this is technically a double post (and a bump, really), but it's one with a good reason. The normal runner of this thread and it's appearance counting hasn't updated it since before the site was rebooted. Why is not something I know, nor that I need to know.

What I do know, however, is that because I didn't want to see this thing die, I have taken the most recent version of the character counter we recovered and added the numbers from the strips that followed it up til present, so I have a more recent set of numbers to post. If anyone is interested, I will post them here after today's strip comes in and I add the numbers from there.

This likely won't be something I do regularly, as this isn't actually my thing and I was just interested in where the numbers were up to, but they're here if you want them.

So! Even though 3 posts in a row isn't the best, here it is, from working out.

The Character Count as of the comic on Friday 3rd of June 2016http://www.egscomics.com/index.php?id=2197

I'm back, ladies and gentlemen.

When the thread was lost after the forum reboot and an old version was recovered, the amount of re-calculating that would have taken me was somewhat demoralizing, and I kept putting it off. Long story short, I ended up moving, losing the original count entirely, and never got around to starting up again.

Well, I'm currently sitting around with nothing to do, have acquired some fancy new pens, and thought I'd try them out with a new-and-improved version of the character count. Improved for me, at least. Now each year's worth of appearances in my notebook will be color-coded. Neat! That does sort of mean I have to start over, which is actually more work than trying to pick up where I left off, but whatever.

I'll be posting the counts one year at a time until I catch up. Here's 2002:

Elliot: 136 (1st to 50, 1st to 100)

Tedd: 127 (3rd to 50, 2nd to 100)

Grace: 102 (4th to 50, 3rd to 100)

Sarah: 91 (2nd to 50)

Ellen: 52 (5th to 50)

Bold denotes a member of the main cast. Obviously I don't need to indicate which characters made their debuts this year, as that would be all of them. That feature will begin in 2003.

What would really be helpful for the forums is giving topics "Slickies".  A designation that would always make topics slide to the end of the list no matter how recently they have been updated.
