Les XXIIIes Jeux olympiques d'hiver

Recommended Posts

The XXIII Olympic Winter Games of PyeongChang are upon us.

I know all the Bunnies are still rooting against the gods of curling.

But the big meanies aside, are there any other comments to be made over then next few weeks?

For example, if winter sports were available in the era of the Classical Greeks, would they have insisted on nude competitors in those games as well?

Sorry, but like Hockey, Curling is Canada's sport, and I am patriotically bound to worship it's gods.

I would honestly be surprised if the Ancient Olympic were held during the summer, as Grecian summers are horrible and hot. Not good weather for strenuous physical activity. Though it would be outside of the growing season if they took place in the summer.

As for whether or not Classic Greeks would have been nude in actual cold weather games, I'm not sure. On one hand, the Greeks weren't stupid. Ice cold weather can do serious harm. On the other hand, they might have considered that part of the challenge.

If Sparta was hosting the games, that would almost be certain.

If Sparta were hosting the games, everybody participating would be required to run the full Marathon wearing armour and full kit to prove their manliness as a preliminary event before the games started.

Today that event is called schlepping your carry on luggage across hub airports.

Miss your connection and you must wait another four years.

Posted in wrong thread.

The last time Olympic Games were held in Korea, almost nothing was broadcast live in the US.
But that was before NBC learned how to use a whole lotta cable channels to spread out commentary and commercials.

On a slightly related matter, does anyone else think Biathlon style shooting should be a part of freestyle skiing, ski jumping, and/or figure skating?

I watched the USA beat the snot out of OAR (aka Russia) in the curling round robin stage.  I felt a little sorry for the OAR players because their uniform looked like a bad retail job company polo shirt.

Reminds me of a minor scandal a long time ago -- someone had foisted off some really substandard t-shirts on the Danish Olympic team resulting in a couple of Captain Kirk moments for our athletes. At least one of our local gossip rags commented that at least it gave the ladies something to look at.

No. Clearly it should be part of curling, ice hockey and bobsleigh.

I also think it should be upgraded so as to be played with miniguns.

Considering the size of the stones in Curling? how about artillery guns?

Slightly overkill and also it is somewhat hard on the ice to attempt to emplace even light artillery on a curling field.

They just need to build a bigger ice surface, maybe out on the pacific ocean?

Nah, do it with paintball guns/"markers" instead!  The figure skaters can use glittery neon colors.  The skiers can shoot downwards to increase their height, or fire off an explosion of color as they spin and flip in the air.  The crowd can bring their own ponchos, like for Gallagher or Blue Man Group shows.  As the events go on, the snow and ice will look more and more like Holi, the Indian festival of colors!

Considering the madness to combine unrelated components that afflicts so many weapons makers, I am actually surprised that no one has yet built an armored (that is to say, a tank) Zamboni.

If even a fraction of the drug and doping violations charged against the Russian Olympic Team officials are true, the Russian team does deserve some sanctions.

But will taking away the team Name, Colors, and Uniform from the 2018 athletes really punish the 2014 managers and politicians?

Can't say it's for lack of trying.

There is so much drug and doping crap going on with Tour de France that I once suggested that they just give up, rename the whole thing Tour de Pharmacie and have the pharmaceutical companies be sponsors for the team. And each team be named for the drug they were sponsoring. So we had the Aspirin Team, the Viagra Team, the Ecstasy Team, the NyQuil Team, the Ambien Team...

I'd spend every mile desperately racing for the next toilet.

That event is traditionally dominated by American spectators and tourists.

As a people, we often fail epically when consuming foods and beverages beyond our borders.
