Maybe a few decades ago.  Maybe even one decade ago.  Now, at least in USA and EU, I think they'd be accepted by the majority.

I look at stuff the majority of voters want here in Denmark, then I look at our government, and then optimism crawls off to die.

But then you would get the cheap, knock-off brand versions that explode into flames or change you into a war chicken or something.

Yeah, learning something is now considered harmful.

I hope it would end as prohibition. Or as attempts to keep kids of the porn sites.

Actually, did we ever saw spell to fail dangerously? Spells seem very reliable an consistent in EGS and even interference between two spells more likely ends safe.

(That's argument against the war chicken part. I suppose the exploding will be possible, although not as dangerously as Samsung phones. Something more like Susan's fairies when unsummoned.)

If Magic needs to actively suppress systems to prevent them from working, that would explain why Magus's magic and the griffins' magic(assuming their rule system is different) work in Moperville.

Very good point. And yes, that seems to be what Will of Magic was doing.

Can we count the dewitchery diamond as such a spell? I think trying to create an item that decurses but results in an unwaking werewolf that goes on a killing spree would be a dangerous failure.

... right. Ok, ONE case of spell failing dangerously. And it was still only dangerous in combination with another spell (the werewolf curse).

The spell was also cast by an individual that later became famous as an idiot for what he did. Abraham wasn't exactly the best at thinking things through...

Yes ; the fact this made him famous suggest the dangerous failures of spells are rare. Noone get's famous for writing if(i=0), because almost everyone who tried to program did it at least once. (And who thinks he didn't he just didn't found it yet.)

Well, sure, you CAN get famous if your stupid mistake everyone did ends up crippling generation of security keys for two years or if it crashes a $18.5 million space probe ... or $326.8 million one.

I was referring to my above joke about the guy who wanted security to fail dangerous, but sure, that works, too. ^_^
