Right. The legendary pickpocketing capabilities of some games ... wait. Isn't the rogue/thief according to original paper rules of AD&D capable (with enough skill) to steal the sword enemy is just attacking him with?

No

Pity. Still, according to tvtropes, he is able to steal shirt off someone's back in 3rd edition and ongoing spell effects in Pathfinder:Spheres of Power.

Well, that depends on how the GM is feeling . . .

That would be rule zero in a nutshell.

Exactly. However, remember also the rule ... well, I'm not sure what's the number, but there was something about goal of game being to have fun, not for GM or players to "win" over the other.

... and remember, if party thief can do that, so can NPC.

In the Heavy Gear game I was in, our GM made an adversary that supposedly rivaled our team sociopath. During the course of the campaign it pretty much became a contest to see who was more sadistic. When we finally cornered the guy, our Sociopath's method of interrogation involved cutting off the guy's fingers, frying them in butter, and then feeding them back to the guy. It was pretty clear who won.
