I'm not particularly knowledgeable about this, so I Googled it. The answer is, yes. This seemed to be a noteworthy example.

It happened in a number of places I am aware of. Poland. Ukraine. Bosnia-Hercegovina. Basically anywhere where the Nazis considered the local population to be subhuman, which was in most of the nations they occupied. Denmark was in fact such a noteworthy exception that Stalin demanded us treated as a Nazi ally as opposed to a liberated nation after the war. The Allies were able to resist this demand mainly due to the growing Resistance in Denmark, which really started to gain momentum in late 1943. Ironically the reason for the initial nearly complete cooperation with the Nazis was due exactly to the fact that they treated Denmark so well at first and largely left Danes and their government to their own devices. Maybe they should have drawn a lesson from that.

None of those surprise me. France ... for some reason I though it got different treatment.

It didn't. Nor did Belgium nor the Netherlands. For that matter, even a lot of Germans got liquidated.

This is a movie quote I rather liked: "So many people forget that the first country the Nazis invaded was their own."

Again, those won't surprise me.

The more I'm thinking about it, however, the more I wonder WHY I though France got different treatment. Maybe because was invaded last and liberated first so they were not there for so long?

(Now I totally expect you counter with some country which was invaded after France ... hmmm ... ok, here they mention some islands ... and Soviet Union ... and Italy. However, those islands were really small, the occupied part of Soviet Union was also small relatively to the whole Union and Italy was already fascists before. Also I totally though Soviet Union was attacked sooner but I see it was year later.)

Even their own cadre; that was the point of The Night of Long Knives, consolidate control.

Yeah, good example. Hitler wanted a deal with the German Army and the industrialists, and in order to complete it, the power of the SA needed to be broken. They had gradually changed from useful tool to liability anyway, so it hardly mattered that much to him.

I was referring to WW2 and I was being deliberately ridiculous. My apologies!

You are of course correct otherwise.

No need to apologize. Something being joke rarely stops me from answering sort-of-seriously.

(Maybe I should've added smiley as well. Sorry. Like, sorry I forgot about you, smiley :))
