Two people who love her think it plausible that Susan would get Ice Magic. One really good reason for her to turn to Grace as a therapist is that Grace is likely durable enough to survive a Susan breakdown.

A thought just struck me. What if one aspect of Magic's change is too make it easier for people to hide the fact that they have it? This would explain Catalina's sudden ability to keep a secret from Susan.

Perhaps not even an aspect of the change.

What if one of the contributing factors of the witch hunts of previous centuries was magic diverting the appearance of magic from those who really were magical to those who did not have power?

Magic, in EGS, tends to make those who have it seem more attractive, stronger, more powerful, more confident.  Victims of witch hunts were often strangers, the poor, those without legal or social power.
