Yeah, “American Football” really ought to be named “American Rugby” instead, since it is much closer related to Rugby than to Association Football.

Some sources still refer to the American game as "Gridiron"  because at one time the stripes divided the field into squares

Then the teams figured out that, except for marking what was "out of bounds", they really didn't need lines running the length of the field and so they cut their paint bill in half

I watched a Rugby game on TV once.  I think I might like it, if some one would explain the rules.  The picking a player up to block a shot was weird.
