Comic for Monday, February 14, 2022

I think this is the first time Edward's met Ashley, and he didn't skip a beat. Neither did she.

I am assuming glow lines around Grace only indicate emotion, not actual glowing.

Looking forward to some Edward exposition next comic. I hope he explains why he is so afraid of the griffins. We are not likely to see why in-comic, unless it ends badly, which is not a thing in EGS.

Also, for the griffins, they could bring Kevin along for safety. It the griffins begin behaving aggressively, they deploy Kevin, the griffins die laughing, and everyone is safe (except said griffins).

It may be that, because Edward has now learned more about the nature and cause of the “energy clog” (i.e. that it was created by an Immortal who sought to create an area of excess magical energy), that somebody more powerful than Tara and Andrea (e.g. their patron government) would interpret it as an attack on their side of the world to deprive them of the natural inflow of energy. In such a scenario, it would require Edward’s diplomatic strength in order to persuade them that it is not in fact an attack.

Excellent point. Especially since they've personally suffered at the hands of an Immortal from our side of the world.

I don't think they are that worried about immortals, as it was proven that they can push them to the immaterial plain if push comes to shove.  Actually if Voltaire showed up and surprised  attacked that would tell us if the immortal laws have been changed or not.  Which would be a Bad Thing all things considered.

Sure, but Andrea was used as a pawn by Voltaire and Pandora blocked a flow of Magic into their side of the world. Even without a change in Immortal Law, they have reason to be pissed. Edward may seem a bit paranoid, but he has legitimate reason to be worried.

It would be both funny and tragic if the Griffins have a prejudice against seyunolu.

That's been one of my concerns recently (since Grace decided to join the party to meet the Gryphons).

If an entity on our side of the world causing the clog could be viewed as an attack, would they hold our whole world responsible? More likely if their side has a unified government, but that has not been stated. Since they recognized royalty, that might suggest not modern governments, which might then say smaller kingdoms are more likely.

Huh, I had assumed immortals were free to flit about willy-nilly; you are suggesting that they are bound to a specific world, just like the rest of us. That fits what we've seen so far. I believe you are correct I had also assumed Voltaire recruited Andrea from her side, but that does not have to be the case. In fact, it makes more sense that the rules being different on different sides are still tied to specific immortals, not just to where they happen to be.

This raises an interesting question. We already know that traveling between dimensions is possible in EGS. I would assume then that an immortal potentially could as well (if it has to be prevented, Dan could invent meta rules why they can't, 'part of the realm' or some such). Assume that a Voltaire travels to the Griffin's world. Which set of rules does he operate under. Which set(s) reset him? Where is he reborn (I'd assume in the realm he's currently in)?

I'm still going with, "Squirrels are tasty".

Yes, but what about humanoid squirrels who are as powerful as a Lesser Princess?

Or they might have from several hundred to several thousand separate kingdoms with an over-arching World Council that is like a more integrated version of our United Nations.

They would probably notice Grace. She's larger than they average squirrel.

EGS needs to introduce a Griffin named Megan so they can say, "Shut up, Meg".

Yep. The EU has a few kingdoms in it, does it not? At least nominal ones?

I hadn't really thought this through, but an Immortal from our side of the world might not be bound by the rules set by the "Ancients" on the Griffins side. If so, the presence of such a loose cannon would be unwelcome by said Ancients.

It's not obvious to me that Tara and Andrea consider themselves agents or diplomats of their government, however structured. Tara, at least, seems to take things into her own paws. Tara might not be concerned with niceties like distinguishing our Immortals from the rest of our world.

Hm... I initially misread that. Running with it...

Squirrels are in fact omnivores. Their regular diet includes insects and small lizards. They'll raid birds' nests for eggs or baby birds when they think they can get away with it. But they don't have a special interest in horses.

The article was about griiffins; well, griffons, because D&D.

Most animals are more omnivorous than you'd think. Horses and deer will eat mice. In the squirrels case, squirrels are just rats with better press agents.

I can't recall that I've ever eaten a rodent, but I assume they are delicious, if you are willing to pick through and find the meat. Guinea pigs (Cavy) are a staple in the Peruvian Andes. I believe they fulfill a similar role to a pig, subsisting on scraps.

It's hard to get real information on griffons because they are blocking all the data about them.  And by "they" I mean the secret masters of the earth, not griffins.

Most animals will eat meat if they can get it, but most herbivores lack the skills and inclination to  chase down and kill as a means of acquiring it.

How do we know that the griffins themselves are not the secret masters of the Earth? They are half-feline, after all.

That's what the griffins want you to think.

Google finds some, here's a wiki article. You must mean specifically D&D bestiary data. I can see why WotC would not want that published widely and would enforce their copyright. But the word 'griffin/griffon/gryphon is public domain, right? I don't see what would prevent you from publishing your own stats, as long as you were clear that's what it was. Wouldn't stop the lawyers from coming after you, though.

Griffons are in the SRD, so are open game content, so WotC lawyers will not be coming for you if you use them in any sort of game related content.

Two questions. First, I have not played since 3.5 and they dumped Greyhawk, (a bunch of us quit after that),  but my understanding was that a lot of the point of 4 was to pull back IP. What is the current status of the SRD, what does it apply to?

Second, then why are the griffins hiding?

(Also, 'It's legal to use' does not prevent lawyers from suing over IP. One strategy is use deep pockets to bury legitimate competition.)
