Seems that the owl/lion griffin is a republican, in the "wants to establish a republic" sense.  This could be dangerous until they find out that is what this side of the universe has, at least with regards to mages.

The hoot of an owl in an otherwise still and silent darkness is not in itself threatening to a human*, but can imply an unknown threat

The roar of a lion is an imminent threat

When I try to imagine combining the two, it comes up as destructive interference.  Neither one quite as ominous as it would be on its own

*While not threatening to a human, the hoot of an Owl is an imminent threat to almost any animal smaller than a rabbit

Not necessarily

Not every regicide is motivated by (small r) republican sentiments

There are plenty of beings who, if they think they can get away with it (such as being outside their homeland), enjoy destroying anyone with power, position, authority, wealth, privilege, prestige, title . . . .

And plenty of others are opposed to "royalty that isn't me".

A good point—he may be the follower of a would-be king who wants the competition suppressed.

Another possibility is that he is so stuck in the royalty-based paradigm that he assumes that the first potential royal that he sees must be representing the local ruling dynasty, possibly even the heir to the throne himself. After all, he came in person with his “aides” to meet some “ambassadors “ from the other side.

It's a relief to know Mr. Verres is alive (for now, but I expect it to stay that way for the foreseeable future) and that the attacker isn't one of the griffins the group made friends with.

Speaking of which, points to mlooney for predicting it would be someone new.

It's not like I don't say that it's a new character every time there is a chance of having a new character.  The Dan just does that.
