Justin is just doing his job.  Weirdly I'll grant, but selling stuff is what he's supposed to do.  I'm not sure why he thinks Ellen has $500 (plus tax) to spare.

Yeah, Ellen doesn’t have a job, and five hundred bucks is a lot for an unemployed teen unless you have indulgent parents who are as wealthy as Susan’s mom. It’s probably about half of what Justin gets paid per month, if we go by today’s wage standards.

I'd say Justin is not doing his job well. I'd be tempted to switch stores if I was a random customer accosted in like manner. Likely that was a poor inventory purchase, and they will be stuck with it. Maybe they could hold a tournament with an entry fee and award it, spread the cost around.

Ellen's not really a "random customer", and she did say she wanted to spend money there. Plus there is always the theory that Justin was joking around and he didn't really think Ellen was going to buy the thing, but it didn't hurt to try.

So, you are saying that, unlike me, you don't think Ellen was thinking, "What the #3!1, Justin?"

Justin knew Ellen would not buy that.

Ellen knew Justin knew she would not buy that.

Justin knew Larry had an unpleasant reputation with women.

Justin may have been offering Ellen a subtle way to retreat from Larry, if she needed it.

Of course, George will notice this and take it as conformation Justin is helping Ellen protect secrets.

Ok, that''s convoluted, but plausible.

Justin is back from getting burgers and milkshakes.  This means that George can spend more time examining Ellen and those that she comes in contact with.  I wonder of Sarah told Elliot and/or Ellen about George being "a big rude Yoda".
