At least until Republicans decide to build the New Wall around the state.

True story, I was asked about my passport and what I would do for cash by folks I know when I moved there. <eye roll>

I dunno, Las Cruces has its appeal. Gotta give at least a grin to a city where a major street is named Lover's Lane.

(Well, literally, it's Amador Avenue.)

My home town had a Lois Lane.

I've been to Las Cruces, the school is nice, does some good research. Seriously, not much else there of note.

Truth or Consequences is noteworthy for being renamed after a game show.

New Mexico has a very nice beach. There's a lake in the middle (Elephant's Butt), so technically it is all beach, right? (Here's the 'e' I dropped.)

 Important question.  Red or Green?

I assume you mean chili. Both have their merits. Green should taste fresher, red tends to be a bit sweeter. I use way more red because it's generally more available, but I buy green if I can find it. Like both, they're different, but close enough to chose either. That's for sauce.

Now, if you mean, 'a bowl of chili', that is not so well defined. In the NE US, 'a bowl of chili' is what you get an Wendy's, a bowl of chili con carne. The first stop in Albuquerque, I ordered a bowl of chili, and got a bowl of cooked green chili peppers. Not what I was counting on. I have grown to like them. But the answer to your question is way more variable; depends on who made it. I've had good red and green chili dishes, with or without beans and/or meat. But not always good.

If you are going to add chilis to something, other than as powder, pretty much always green. You could cut up a fresh pepper that was aged past green, I don't think I've seen that done. Powder is always made from dried aged red chilis. You could probably powder a green chili, but it would not be trivial.

Red chili sauce outsells green by a very wide margin. It may not be entirely demand, I think it keeps better, being less fresh, thus easier to ship.

I have grown chilis; I picked a European variety, yellow when ripe, got both a hot and a sweet variant. I don't remember the name. My lot was small, they cross bred, and they were all hot, but they had a nasty metallic aftertaste.

That is my answer as well.  However, as just “red or green” it's the NM state question:

Quote

In 1996 the New Mexico State Legislature passed a House Joint Memorial declaring “Red or Green?” as the official state question.  This refers to the question always asked whether one prefers red or green chile when ordering New Mexican cuisine.  This measure was passed to signify the importance that the chile industry has on the economy of the state.  New Mexico produced 99,000 tons of chile in 2000, valued at nearly 49 million dollars, the number one cash crop in terms of sales in the state.  With the adoption of this state question, New Mexico is acknowledging the financial gain and national recognition that chile generates for the state.

Lol, that is years after I was stationed there, I've never heard of it in that context, 'Official State Question', and I still knew what you meant. Yes, chili is important to NM. NMSU, at Las Cruces, has a chili research facility. (UNM is in Albuquerque.) Chili grown in the dry, hot SW is apparently hotter (picante) than chili grown in a more humid climate.

Still, I think they got the state question wrong. Nor should it be, "Would you like chili with that?" What they really want to ask is, "What would you like with your chili?" (Although, like my first bowl of chili in NM, you can get your chili straight, without other additives.)

Note to others who might want to survive their chili encounter, water does not help. Starch or sugar will cut the burn. Bread, potatoes, something sweet . . .

Or milk, ice cream, etc. - actual milk-based dairy. Or something greasy. Or mayonnaise.

Capsaicin is a non-polar molecule, so does not dissolve in water - but it does in fats and oils. And of course something that's somewhat dry and absorbent can soak it up.

(Why are eggs sometimes classed as dairy? Because, in the US, they go in the refrigerator? So does orange juice. And fish.)

I miss the mom-and-pop restaurant on the highway that ran through McGregor range.  Never did find out why they were allowed to be there, but they served damn good food.

I suspect it has to do with coming from a similar source, and being aggregated in farmer's co-ops. I'm pretty sure when I was a kid, our milk man delivered eggs as well.

Val Kilmer has passed away. If you saw him in Top Gun: Maverick or a recent photo, maybe this isn't a surprise. I'm a bit shaken, because he was a bit younger than I am, and I recall his youthful movies; we are all on a TDY to this life.

Some more links, if you wish: CNN, BBC, Variety (because Firefox Pocket suggested the article), search link.

The pope is dead. However:

If you are a devout Catholic, you may be offended by what follows. Please forgive me. It is only meant as friendly humor.

Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum;
habemus Papam:
Eminentissimum ac Reverendissimum Dominum,
Dominum Pisces
Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae Cardinalem Swimmeatus
qui sibi nomen imposuit Dopefish.

It's time for an English pope.  The last one was Adrian IV, who died in 1159

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Adrian_IV

Either that or another global south pope to tweak select people.  Maybe another Polish or Baltic States pope, to let Russia know what's happening.  Perhaps a Ukrainian pope to really piss Russia off.

As a observer without a horse in the race, Francis seemed better than your average Pope.

In my adult lifetime, there have been 3 popes.  One is a literal saint.  One had the good sense to retire.  And Francis seemed to be better than average, and I hope his successor in from the same bolt of cloth as him.

I think there's been four in my lifetime. I seem to recall one passing away when I was young, then the German guy took over in maybe the '80s, then Francis, so 4 so far and one pending.

I wonder if Cardinal Secolla will be made Pope?

I’m worried about the people who believe the Prophecy of the Popes, because the only one remaining on the list is the final one, who is supposed to preside over the annihilation of Rome. Believers may decide that this means that the Apocalypse is nigh.

Some people can't be happy unless the world is about to end.

When we muddle through this apocalypse, they will find another doomsday scenario on which to hang their hopes.

It’s like they think that the only way they will get to heaven is by being Raptured, and they won’t get there by dying.
