My expectations are he won't stay in a healthy frame of mind, but he will experience actual incremental, seemingly minor improvement that will have an eventual payoff. 'A seed is planted' sort of thing. Or, from Rich's point of view, he's the host to an alien female face hugger.

I initially read that as "elven herbs & spices".
