NP Comic for Saturday, Dec 10, 2022

Recommended Posts

NP Comic for Saturday, Dec 10, 2022, wherein, Ellen names the recently introduced cleric, and skeptical George behaves skeptically. Not much else happens.

'Marik' seems like a reasonable random fantasy name to pull out of your butt when you're on the spot. Not sure why George would be skeptical. Perceiving she's gone off script?

The mayor is not happy about their theory.

Zorro, the traditional fictional character, is spelled with two 'r's; still, Zoro could be a valid name.

Do the professionals of this town include Doctor Proctor?  Sawyer the Lawyer?  Hank at the bank?  Chef Jeff?  Or Janet Dorr the Custodian?

Wouldn't that have been Merik, not Marik?

I could be that clerics have to take the name Marick with an additional modifier to tell which Marick you mean.  There is a real world counter part to this.

There are some 30 million Sikh adherents worldwide. All male Sikhs carry the surname Singh, while all females are named Kaur.

Thus subverting the the purpose of surnames. You could do worse than being a Sihk, though. their values are awesome.

Nguyen is similar, some very high percentage of Viets have that surname.

Any religion that requires its male member be armed with a sword at all time make it cool in my book.

Dagger, and I think they make exceptions for things like airlines now.

I'm not keen on religion, meaning the aggregate people side of faith. Sihks have a few fairly strange ones, like the daggers and the hair; but, as stated above, they have good core values, and from the few Sihks I've met, they seem to tend to live them. (We have a fairly sizable South Asian population here, because tech is big here, and the companies want to hire cheaper labor.) The ostensible reason for carrying daggers is 'protect the weak'. (Also, they initiated and grew in response to Islamic invasion of India, so there is that.)

I can't say the same about my faith affiliates, churches seem to miss the points of what Jesus was saying. If you were to characterize what the church is like, I'm pretty sure 'judgemental' would be one of the words you would pick; yet, 'judge not' is a recurring theme in what he said.

The Kirpan started off as a full sized sword.  And yeah, the TSA requires them to be in checked baggage.  Other than that, the can open carry any place in the US and most countries.

So now all you need is for the SCA to be a religion, and you're all set.

Hmm.  The SCA is already an official non-profit organization.  Wonder what it would take to move it to religious status.  And would the sitting crowns count as the leaders of the church or would it be the curia of the kingdom?  I suspect that question would vary with the kingdom.

You could go Pastafarian. You probably own a colander.

Hmm.  Yeah that's possible, however I'm not seeing his noddlely appendages being a big thing in the SCA.
