That's one reason why I roll for the players on search checks.  I don't want them to know what they rolled for the check.

I have always worked under the assumption that "You don't think there is n" = "You know there is n".

I'm a firm believer that almost nothing is certain*. If I was a DM, I wonder how long it would take for the players to catch on to the fact that it's quite rare for me to make statements of fact without hedges.

* Pure math and the existence of at least one conscious mind ("I think, therefore somebody is.") being the only exceptions I can think of off the top of my head.

I never say "There is no trap here" but say "you don't think there is a trap" or if I roll a 20 (or sometimes a 1) "You are almost certain that there is no trap here".  If I rolled that they did find one, I'll say "You think there is a trap".  I'll also say that if I roll badly and there isn't a trap.
