An appreciation of Zebra Girl

Recommended Posts

I have been following Zebra Girl for a long time, since KeenSpot, in fact!

It has been my favourite webcomic for all that time, still being so to this day. Zandra's story is close to my heart. She is a beautiful, powerful character that must struggle with being hated and demonised (literally, in her case). I often feel that I am very like her, yet I lack that power to conquer my identity and reforge myself as I desire. Maybe I see Zandra as a metaphor for my own pain. Is it silly to attach my feelings to a character like this? Perhaps so, but nonetheless, I do. And so I always enjoy reading about her.

Apologies for the emotional rambling. It is late, I'm tired and I may not be making as much sense as I want to. I have wanted to say something for years but my account on the old forums never got activated. I appreciate the comic a lot. It's a little bit of escapism that helps keep me sane.

Thank you, Joe.

You're welcome, and thanks very much Umbral, for reading, and for writing about it.  It means a lot to me to hear that this comic has meant something to you.  It might be cliche, but that really does make it all worthwhile.  More than that, more than I can say.

We're all very lucky you stuck to your gunz, Joe.  Now we all have the chance to give back through patreon and through these nifty new forums and developing comment sections!

I don't expect to be posting here much, but I'm glad I came and nabbed my username at least. :P

To Umbral: I don't think it's at all silly to attach feelings to a character.  I take it to mean you personally identify with Zandra and her struggles?  This is a lot why we humans love stories, especially well written ones.  We often look for and find ourselves in the stories we read.  This is no accident, because more often than not the writer is also putting part of themselves in the story and characters they write, and we home in on that.  Even when it's a fantastical story like this, we can find something or someone we can really relate to.

Me?  I related most closely with Jack, I think... the younger one, at least.  Total slacker. :P  I only hope I find my own source of magical powers, some day...
