Here is

Getting sneak attacks varies from version to version.  Right now, depending on what type of rogue you are it triggers if the target is alone (i.e. no friendlies with in 5 feet) or has a friendly with in 5 feet.  Plus, regardless, if you have advantage on attacking them.  Previous version had some what more complex rules about flanking, being flatfooted or "surprised".

... which is why you should always wear boots with good arch support when delving in dungeons (in the previous editions).

Now, the new theme is "I think you're alone now."

Quote

"I think you're alone now,

Cutting you is easy with no one around.

I slice to the bone now,

Hope you have some loot that is easily found."

AFAIK, a sneak attack is when the enemy is too unaware or too distracted to react defensively to your attack, so they are wide open and can not dodge, deflect, or block the attack. For RPGs, this tends to be modeled with bonus damage or an automatic critical hit.

In 5e, it's really bad if they get a critical hit when they are sneak attacking as sneak attack add dice to the damage and a critical hit double the number of dice rolled.  The only thing worse than a rogue getting a crit is a paladin getting a crit and deciding to put their highest level of spell slots into the smite.  From a DM's stand point having multiple characters, each with dice adding modifiers, score crits when their initiative is much higher than the monster is a real pain.  Goes from what should be a several round combat to a single round combat.  I've had this happen several times.

I think it’s minmaxing plus forbidden fruit. Players devise workarounds for the challenge of doing so. It’s the same mindset that leads tinkerers to modify devices to do stuff that they were never intended to do, like making a dishwasher run the game Doom.

Geek points are a thing.  I once has a "production" web site that was running on an iPhone as a demo.
