Nanase  is thinking in Japanese.  Wonder how often she does that?.

Having lived in Japan and spoken Japanese fairly well after the first year, I can say that one tends to need to switch mental gears when switching from one language to another, and it is often easier to continue with the current language in one’s own head than to bother switching, especially if one is currently thinking about words read/heard/spoken/about to speak in that language. For Nanase to think about her mother’s Japanese speech in “English mode”, she would need to mentally translate it to English, which feels like unnecessary effort if one is not translating for another person’s benefit.

tldr: It’s easier to think about Mama’s Japanese words in Japanese mode than to mentally translate it.

I suspect that is the case.  We haven't seen Nanase's thought bubble when she was speaking Japanese before.

This is the first time I can recall that Nanase's mom has actually been reasonable. She embraced Nanase in the hospital, but she discounted discounted what Nanase was saying. She bragged about Nanase to her friends, but not in Nanase's presence, and the context was not entirely positive.

I think it is the first time in the comic that Nanase had thoughts worth a bubble. Also note, in the hospital, she had been speaking with Ellen in English.

We've seen more thought bubbles in the last couple of days (both main an news paper) than we normally get in a years worth of comic. Does this mean that the characters are becoming more introspective?

Are we  approaching the point where Nanase admits "Mom, I have magic I use dangerously.  I know you know this.  And I know you know I know this."

Or will Mrs Kitsune declare "Nanase, I know you have magic you use dangerously.  I know you know I know this.  And I know you know that I know you know this."

And just what kind of mystical monkey wrench will Akiko throw into the works?  And how will it involve cookies?

I would not be suprised to discover Mrs Kitsune has been micro dosing her family with various poisons for years.  Mithridates style.

That would be a bit weird, but still within the realm of possibilities.  Call it 1:20 chance

It fits the narrative for Iocaine powder from the movie, though . . .

Yeah, it would at that.  But if both are immune to it, wouldn't it make it a waste of time?  Not that I want to see Nanase or her mother dead of course.

If Mrs Kitsune poisons Nanase a little every day, she will develop a tollerance to stronger toxins like public school mystery meat

Can you develop a tolerance to mystery meat?

The people who claim that Mystery Meat actually comes from some animal considered inedible to humans are greatly underestimating the economic efficiency of the modern meat industry. The wholesale price of meat is almost entirely taken up by the cost of feeding, butchering, and distributing the animals, with a profit margin below 20%. Chickens are especially efficient at producing a high amount of meat per pound of feed, and we have a whole industry devoted to producing more than a billion of them per year in the USA alone.

As such, there is not really any cheaper way to produce meat than what is already being done. At best, you could get cut-price feed that is of dubious quality, and find workers who work for even less than the undocumented aliens that the industry already uses.

Using any non-traditional animals would make you unable to take advantage of all of the optimization the industry already has, and thus would not be cheaper to produce. About the only thing that would be cheaper in bulk is fishing bycatch—all of those fish that get pulled up in nets that aren’t otherwise wanted for sale as food.

What you’re more likely to see in actual Mystery Meat is the use of less popular cuts of the usual food animals, that nobody wants to name because kids would say “eww”, such as the liver and heart.
