Is there a random or discretionary element to opponent pairing selection?  

I don't see how Hope can certainly arrange the meeting with Sarah unless they both stay so late in the tourneyment that they each play every remaining contestant

Pretty sure they play n, where n is the power of 2 that encompasses the number of players, so a lower per cent of players the larger the group is.
