Elliot is a responsible prince, notifies others when he needs to.

They are on a balcony. Where did the paper and quill come from? Where is the ink well?

A well-trained royal staff member is ready for anything.

Bird calls to summon staff and nonsense questions as identification?

Whoever runs palace security must have attended (failed?) British movie spy school.

More like the Pink Panther school.

Yet the lack of an inkwell is noted.

Obviously, the staff carries one, just in case the king needs to sign a law.

It may be a ball point quill.

I thought of that, even looked up the history of fountain pens. They are far older than I realized, the first before the year 1000, albeit not at all common, single devices, until relatively recently.

Also learned (which I'd heard before and forgotten) that a quill would have required the presence of a pen knife (hence the name) to keep it sharp. Probably reasonable to skip that for one note.

Heh, that would be an onerous duty; though I suppose if it were common, a metal container that resisted breakage would be made. I think it was far more typical to write at a writing desk, because the procedure was much more involved than we typically imagine with our modern pens. even modern pend sometimes leak.

I think the servant should be carrying a goose as a source of fresh quills. And snacks.

Especially those @#%$ Canadian geese, which are no longer legitimately migratory. There are probably birds that are more annoying, but I have yet to meet one. There is a minor industry making fake animals to scare them away. They are only slightly smarter than the rocks, not sure where they rate compared to the shrubs, and they are territorial as #&@%.

If quills come back into style, I know a good source.

In the SCA, doing a scroll with an actual quill is considered extra special.  Most scrolls are done with expensive pens. Dip  pens most of the time. Of course, right now, it's only legal to use turkry feathers to make quills.  Or peacock, those being the only domestic birds that have wing feathers worth making a quill from. Traditionally, swan feathers were the preferred for making quills.

The Chicago Botanic Garden is built around a series of lagoons, providing irresistible goose habitat. They employ a man and a dog who use a golf cart to go from lagoon to lagoon during nesting season to convince the geese to go someplace else. Having watched them at work, I can report that this may be the happiest dog in the world.

But seriously, in the era when pens had to be dipped in inkwells, people would use pencils for writing down quick notes while standing up, and then copy it in ink later if needed.

The last few strips are causing me extremely X-rated thoughts about the honeymoon. Especially if Hope needs to be there to keep renewing the enchantment(s)....

I suspect that her little, easily shocked brain would blue screen if she had to watch.

I don't know why I think she's easily shocked. She just seems to be the type that would be.

EGS Hope might be; Fairy Godmother Hope seems more savvy. She seemed to have some awareness of how gender affects life, and have a liberal attitude toward transforming Tedd's gender, and now the Prince's.
