I have never seen “The Nutcracker”. I don't know why I know about The Mouse King.

As a Ballet, The Nutcracker's story is rather brief.  A competent storyteller can convey the plot in the time a tired toddler can pay attention by the Christmas tree. 

You have probably heard the story a dozen times without realizing it. 

Once in Justice League, the Flash and Ultra Humanite gave an animatronic doll that told the story to an orphanage on Christmas Eve.

The Nutcracker is also famous for needing dozens of “mice” dancers who are normally young children.  This gives the dance company a ready-made audience, as parents will see it and relatives get dragged in. It frequently pays for the rest of the year for the company.
