Fortunately for Tedd, EGS tends to file down the sharper corners of life.  Reconciliation is a recurring theme in EGS, RE Justin and Melissa.

Oh indeed. And this is what happened in my life as well, fortunately. And just as with Justin and Melissa, an important part of why it happened was through the intervention of other people I cared about -- and who cared about me.

But it can take years. Even with Justin and Melissa, it took years. And the process is scarcely painless. Then again, it was well worthwhile.

Magic can be universal force and STILL have different rules for how different species can use it. It would even explain why some things won't change in magic reset: interaction between two spells will remain same, but interaction between human and spell - like when human would cast that spell - would change.

I think we have a disconnect here. It would be possible for magic to be a universal force and simply be expressed differently by different species were it not for the fact it can (and will) change at will and do so by individual species, that is the definition of a non-universal force. Universal forces are just that, universal. They can't change without a change to the entire universe, and they don't care that they can't change. While magic is choosing to be expressed, and how. Now, magic is probably powered by the interaction of some as-of-yet unknown universal force(s), with magic itself being the arbiter of how and when those forces can be used. That means magic is extremely powerful, and perhaps even a universal entity, but not a universal force.

It's less disconnect and more shortage of terms.

There is magic the universal force. Magic analyzer wand is able to measure it. The results are labelled according to what that reading means for humans, but you get readings from Uryuom as well.

Then there is the Will of Magic, who have some objectives and flair for drama ... for humans on this half of universe. So, either it for some reason have different rules and objectives for different species, or it really can only influence humans and Uryuoms actually have their own, with considerably less objectives.

When Andrea was talking about magic, she was talking about the force.  The whale used the term magic energy. Magic reset can't do anything with the clog, because that's already existing energy which can't just disappear.

Meaning, the will of magic might not be as powerful as it seems - or as it poses to be.

Ok how about this, Magic is universal, but if we are to use computer terms like Disco Wizard did, we can say that every species is like a computer and the universe is the internet with magic energy being all the bits flowing through it. Uryuoms can be considered pre-intel Macs, highly specialized to do certain things, not really cross compatible with PCs. Seyunolus like Grace seem to be Intel Macs, can possibly be compatible but would take quite a bit of work to do so. Human's would obviously be PCs. As hkmaly states, the Will of Magic wouldn't be able to do anything to the energy itself (the internet) but changing how Humans interact with it would be like replacing Windows with Linux, eventually Humans would figure out how to reconnect to the internet.

Pretty much. When I said "Universal Force" I was meaning universal force in the physics sense. The energy that powers magic may very well be some universal force, or a known natural force expressed in an unknown way. But the entity(ies) that people refer to as "The Will Of Magic", which seems to be the arbiter of when and how magical forces can be used, is not.

Nitpick.  Boot camp isn't all that hard to use.  Has nothing to do with your over all point, just a detail that triggered my geek mode.

The fact that you need special software to get the job done fits my point nicely. Was also basing it on the many rants I've seen you make on trying to get programs to play nice with each other. ;)

Actually I recall boot camp as being pretty tough. Mind you, in retrospect it was one of the best experiences of my life.

It comes with the OS, but I see your point.

Hmmmm ... better but harder to use operating system? :)

Except even Linux connects to internet out-of-the-box. Which actually works, as humans would still interact with magic - they would just no longer be able to use applications (spells) they were using before.

I would say that learning new spells would be harder than learning new applications, but on the other hand, there seem to be plenty of people unable to move from Internet Explorer to Chrome or Firefox because of differences between those ...

I haven't played with linux in over 10 years so it probably is easier to work with now (or at least there are some distros that are) but I remember having a hard time getting Mandrake connected and trying to find programs compatible with it back then was pretty tough.

First time I tried Linux was something like 20 years ago and I had little trouble finding software that met my needs aside from one detail: being absolutely 100% file- and interface-compatible (including the API) with the Microsoft software that I had to use at work. (That failing soon forced me back to Windows at home.)

Since I retired I have almost entirely abandoned Windows (the exceptions being a couple programs where I have significant quantities of data and haven't found a Linux program that can read the format). And there is enough cross-platform software to meet most needs including quite a few relatively-unusual ones. If you want MS Office - sorry, out of luck. If you want an office suite that includes word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation prep, graphics editing, and specialized mathematical-formula editor, and runs (with complete 100% cross-platform compatibility) on Windows, Linux, OSX, and sort-of on iOS and Android, - you have a choice of offerings, and Microsoft can't compete on the price of most of them ($0.00).

Ah, 1997. I remember I had the job of replacing all the computers at the office where I worked. When I managed to install Win 95 on all the machines without Clippy, my boss gave me a raise on the spot. A small one, admittedly -- but still! The poor man was so happy. :)

Yes, and I think Debian still support the Power PC chip set.  Debian.org says that they do.  Not all programs have been ported however.

I had to abandon Arch Linux on my main computer when I went back to writing music. I didn't want to run the risk of Cakewalk SONAR, the Waves Gold plugins, and Adobe Audition CS6 not working under WINE with all of their copy protection schemes, and I didn't want to have to deal with a steep learning curve for Linux programs Ardour, Rosegarden, and so on.

Well, to be fair, it will connect out-of-the-box over wire. There are some integrated wifi "cards" which have problems.

But don't worry - Microsoft is working hard to close that gap and make Windows also problematic :)

I swear, every time they come out with a new OS claiming to be "easier to use" it turns out to only be "only if you leave it as we set it up", and make it feel like pulling teeth for the more tech savvy people to customize.
