Ellen has all of Elliot's memories up until the diamond, that includes dating Nanase, rescuing Justin and helping him learn to defend himself and gain confidence and friends, rescuing Tedd and growing up with him. It also includes having met Carol years ago, but obviously had forgotten that Carol the Reporter was Sarah's older sister. So yeah, there has been a lot of overlap.

Obviously, she wasn't reporter when he met her. This is not about forgetting something, this was about not realizing that Carol the Reporter and Carol Sarah's sister are the same person.
