So I'm getting a small tournament planned and would like a co-administrator to help plan and run it with me.
Volunteers to help out during the tournament are also helpful.
Design Notes: The tournament will be a small, 8 - 16 person Single or double elimination affair with an emphasis on being quick (3-5 months) and not burning out anyone involved, be they mod, fighter, or voter.
There should a bit of leeway for format experimentation if you're interested in it but all things bow to the first design goal: Don't burn people out and, if possible, leave them hungry for more.

Happy Doomsday Everybody!
20 December 2012 - 07:55 AM
Now we may all know that the world is no more likely to end today than on any other but as Doomsday has just begun for some of us (Specifically, the Australians and Tasmanians) I thought that today would be a great day to celebrate these 48 hours of the end of the world amongst all of us with tales of old things we are glad to see passing and --- as endings always make room for beginnings --- new things we are proud to welcome into this world.
In my own case, I'm happy to have finally found of the source of my toxic relationship with myself and from that happy to have a plan to finally fix it and be rid of it. Likewise, I eagerly anticipate seeing the new person I shall be able to forge myself into in light of this upheaval and all the joys and pains of doing so.
What's your happy Doomsday?

EVILMOD Mafia
06 December 2012 - 02:10 AM
Dark and ominous clouds cross over the land, people huddle in their homes, and a brave few arrive to fight the coming darkness, or assist it. The days of MOD are at hand and minions, while lacking in numbers, more than make up for it in ruthlessness.
Now it is up to the citizens of Mafiaville to defend themselves from the evil that divides them --- naturally by killing each other off --- and ending the threat that seeks to doom them all to entertainment.
Welcome to the game.
Rules:
1: Trust nothing!
2: Unless your role specifically says otherwise, you may not talk about the game outside this thread. This includes dead players.
2a: If your role does say you may talk outside the thread I will be privy to all of your conversations.
3: The game will end when one faction becomes impossible to oppose or a stalemate is reached.
4: Each day shall last a period of at least one week with a possible extension and each night will last 48 hours
5 There will be a vote count every 48 hours during which I shall make a post. You may poke the mod if he has not received
6: Any person fails to post during a single vote count will be poked, anyone who misses Three consecutive counts (without informing me beforehand) will receive an infraction.
6a: Infractions are bad.
7: We will be using plurality lynch (killing the player with the greatest) and in the event of a tie, a randomly selected person will die.
8: Votes should come in the format [Vote: Player] and unvotes as [Unvote: Player]
9: You may not copy and paste your role PMs or other PMs from the mod.
10: Should I believe that the game is being broken by abuse I will act regardless of whether or not a loophole has been found.
The town win condition is: You win when all threats to the Town are eliminated or nothing can prevent the same.

Hey you! Yes, you there behind the keyboard! Post a topic!
Why do I want you to post a topic? Because while this community still does love to talk when something comes up, we have a problem in having nothing to talk about.
To that end: Post a topic! Better yet, post two: And don't wait for someone better informed else to post it, or wait until you have a better idea because trust me: everyone else will be doing that.
So five us topics, give us hundreds of utterly horrible topics. Just give us something to talk about.
Or necromance something relevant: that works too.

Welp, I have pretty much nothing to say here. Now watch me proceed to show you how little I have to say by writing paragraphs on it!
Life's been a bit weird, to put it lightly, and I'm still left with lots of little projects I have to go on here I haven't touched in a year or more. Which makes things hard to start back on with in a way. I'd rather like to "get back into the community" and have wanted things shaken up for a while, but I have little impelling me to do so and I should REALLY continue a project or two rather than abandoning even more and making something new.
As for what I have been doing on this computer rather than procrastinating and what you have seen of my diminished presence here and elsewhere, over the years I have been getting into more and more little old games that I can download, often with some small nostalgia value. Turns out, most of the stuff I loved is still great. So hours of my free time have disappeared in massive chunks in tribute to the growing hunger there, especially this last year. Still play most of my big games on the PS3, going through one big game at a time, but it turns out I haven't bought a game in a year or so either. Doesn't look like I will too soon, given the multiplayer way big new games are trending... I end up liking less and less. So perhaps if I wean myself off these small, snatched games, I'll be finally doing something constructive with my life outside of work again. As it stands though, I'm retro and living in the late 90's again. Yo, look, I'm trendin' and such.
I'm happy you were all so interested in that that you had to ask! Banality abounds!

I've started college at San Jose State University. That's a pretty huge thing. Classes are going well so far, though it's annoying that I have to take mostly general education classes because a few of my classes from JC didn't transfer like I was told they would.
I've also gotten myself involved in a Duels of the PLaneswalkers 2013 tournament put on by TopTierTactics. Single elimination, best of 3 each round. My first match should be tomorrow. I can post the link to the recording if people are interested.

Dan acquired rings and scales in the mail that he ordered two weeks ago to make a scale hauberk.
... he vastly underestimated how many scales it would take, and so, he's going to be ordering a lot more of them in the near future, as Dan wants to go to work on Halloween as the most heavily-armored pizza deliveryman in history. If he can't finish for Halloween, he guesses that he'll just have to wear his maille. That would be decidedly less awesome, because Dan did that last year.

Right now, I'm stalling for time until the school year progresses enough for me to get regular substituting work. In the interim, I'm doing tutoring and other odd jobs to get a bit of cash.
I've been spending a fair amount of time out and about with local friends, though that has died down a bit recently with all the local colleges starting up.
I still play a lot of Diplomacy online. I've been in several tournaments and am gradually becoming one of the veteran players on the site.
Lately, I've managed to re-connect with some of the people here through gaming in several forms. The co-op Team Fortress 2, especially, has been a lot of fun.
I can't deny that my actual forum presence has declined considerably. The slowing of pace in a lot of areas has made things feel a lot less urgent. Much of my motivation for fighting, writing, etc comes from other people. I enjoy working with others and receiving feedback, so when things are slow I am more inclined to work on other things.
Now that things are slowly picking up again, hopefully I'll be able to accomplish a bit more.
Clearly, it's all Tasnica's fault. He's behind everything nowadays, doncha know.

Well, this is as good a place as any to illustrate why I've had hardly any activity on here in a while. I've basically had enough time to pop in and lurk just enough to see if I need to perform any mod actions before I move on to other tasks.
As most of you know, I got married this summer (there will be pictures up soon). Getting married also involved moving to a new place, which took several 3.5-hour trips (each way) to complete. Then there was a honeymoon (there will be more pictures), but with the amount of driving around we did in the month or so after the wedding it was probably the equivalent of about three honeymoons, so I've been away a lot.
And then, after all that was over, things really got hectic. I became the head coach of the local junior high soccer team, which is great because I played soccer for over a decade and have been wanting to coach for a while. However, it would have been nice if they hadn't waited until just five days before the season started to tell me I had the job, or if they had given me an accurate roster so I could contact all the kids about practice time. My players run the gamut from kids who have never touched a soccer ball in their lives to veterans who play year-round, so I have to coach to so many different skill levels it's mind-boggling. Imagine teaching a math class that has kids in it who know trigonometry and algebra, and others who can't even add yet. Running this team feels like it consumes every moment of waking thought that I have, and some non-waking thoughts too, as I've now noticed myself brainstorming drills and strategies in my sleep. I honestly can't remember the last time I wasn't thinking about soccer to some extent.
If that wasn't enough, there's something else that's come up now that's going to be even more time-consuming. This is a continuation of something I started almost two years ago. A few of you know about this already, but for the majority who don't, I've been studying to become an actuary. If you don't know what that is don't feel bad, a lot of people don't know what an actuary is. It's basically a specialized form of mathematician; you do risk analysis and financial calculations. They're primarily used by insurance companies to determine how much they need to charge their customers and how much money they need set aside in order to pay for claims. It's something I have wanted to do for a very long time, but I didn't find out what an actuary was until I was about to graduate college, and at that time it was too late to change majors so I figured there was no point in trying. But since late 2010 I started actually studying the material, and I managed to pass both of the first two certification exams on my first try (which is no easy feat, though aside from DaveK I doubt many people here are familiar with just how difficult these exams are). For a while I stopped there because two exams are usually enough to land a starting job in the field, but after a year of applications I've had a grand total of one interview. So a few days ago I finally found some resources so I could study for a third exam. The test date is in November, so now I have about eight weeks to teach myself enough advanced financial mathematics to fill a 600-page textbook. If this doesn't make me a ghost around here, I don't know what will (other than becoming a literal ghost).

Despite explicitly working off what the college said I needed to take, this also happened to me (years ago) and it does indeed suck.
Best of luck on the test there Mana. I'm fairly certain the tests are more difficult than I'd imagine... mostly because the finance and business courses I've had were fairly mundane and I'd expect you to blow that sort of math out of the water rolling out of bed. If this has you concerned, it's definitely something rough. Again, best of luck.
As for what I've been doing, I've been waking up late which shifts my work schedule to later in the day which kills my evening. Vicious cycle that. The fiscal year's nearly over, so it's time to make certain my numbers are where I want them. All in all, it's going well, but I really need to start getting in earlier.
On top of that, I've been reading a good amount of books including supplements for GURPS, older sci-fi novels, and fantasy novels. The novels are fun and the gaming supplements have gotten me putting together adventures that some of you may be aware of. It's good to be running a game again and I rather like the system for its attention to detail. The first adventure is wrapping up, so I'm going to have to invest more of my down time in writing the next one (or couple if I'm ambitious). I'm not trying for anything incredibly innovative here, this is really "poke it with a stick and see how it twitches" time. Anybody is welcome to sign on for the next adventure provided the final group can gel.
Other gaming news is that I've been in on some RL games as well through folks I met through significant others of work friends. We've been doing 4e for the most part and we did a bit of a modified Godlike/Traveller hybrid. Fun stuff, but between it and bowling on the work league, my evenings are less free than I am used to.
Oh, and I'm apparently in the process of looking for a condo to purchase...
And they think it will make their lives easier
For God knows up till now it's been hard…

Not familiar personally - that's not where my career path went, but I have friends who did, and actuary was my Dad's career as well. In the UK I believe full qualification takes a minimum of 4 years if you pass all the exams first time, which very few people do. My Dad took about twice that long.
As for what I've been/will be doing, 4 out of the next 6 weekends will involve the official preparation for, and taking of, my black belt exam in Tae Kwon Do, which involves going up to the national headquarters and being judged by five 8th-dan masters. This will be my second attempt to get to black belt, so I know what I need to do now - I'm not too worried.
My RL gaming group has just started a campaign using the Marvel Heroic Roleplaying rules, so we spent last night coming up with a setting, character concepts (including NPCs and villains), and how the characters relate to each other. We ended up with a PC team that has power levels running from the Antichrist (rejecting his destiny) and Charlemagne's ghost (possessing his old armour), down to Earl Grey (a tea-themed steampunk inventor) and The Wall (a rugby-themed super durable guy). Rogues gallery includes Second Cromwell and his robotic New Model Army, and a shadowy conspiracy of Conservatives who we named The Wealthy Alpha Tories - they're led by Thatcher's brain-in-a-jar-of-stolen-milk (and there's a reference no one here will get).

Well, I've definitely been one of the lurkers around here for the past year or two, mostly due to involvement at school. I am currently in my senior year of school at the University of Wisconsin- La Crosse and I will be doing my student teaching next semester. I started working at Bath and Body Works this week, which is the first job I've had to do any commuting for since I started college, since working at the front desk of my dorm, being an RA, and working at summer camp don't really involve much travel once you're there. I have a abnormal amount of free time this year, since I'm only taking 13 credits this semester as compared to my usual 18, so I'm currently trying to figure out what to do with myself, because I'm used to having little to no spare time at all. Hopefully, it means that I'll start spending more time here on the forums. In the mean time, I've just been catching up on all of the tv shows that I've never seen before and people keep telling me I should watch. This is enough rambling for now, so I'm just going to cut myself off before I give my full life story.

Last semester of school for my B.A., working on trying to find a job. A career can come later, but I'm gonna need a source of steady income if the world doesn't end on the day I walk for my diploma. I am, though, going to talk with the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences to see if he can get some swing in the proceedings to either get Pantera's "Walk" to play during the proceedings, or get the college's band to play it while we walk across the stage. Probably won't work, but Tony's a good guy, and he and I share a bit of a sense of humor, so we'll see if anything comes of it.
Outside of that, trying desperately to break my creative lull of late. Been lost in my head a lot, and nothing's seen paper.
Game-wise, Borderlands 2 is getting a midnight release, and I will be there. Just got my Skyrim platinum, so woo!

Yeah that's kinda what I figured, I know you didn't do it personally but being a math major I'm sure you were around enough people who agonized over them to be aware of their difficulty. I never knew your dad was an actuary though, that's pretty cool.
And good luck with the black belt test, that sounds awesome.

Good topic idea!!
As far as personal life goes, I'm loving the married life... can't believe it's been over a year since Lumi and I tied the knot. We've adopted two cats... one last May, and another last Monday. They're not getting along with each other yet, but I'm sure they'll end up being great siblings.
We started school on August 27. I have 17 6th graders this year. I get to teach the 6th graders, Reading, English, Science, and Art, as well as teaching 7th grade Science and 8th grade Geometry. I have also been promoted (?) to officially having the title "Technology Coordinator." I'd been doing the duties of the job alongside the principal, but since we got a new one this year (who is much less tech-savvy than the previous one), it's all fallen on me. I've overseen the installation of 10 new wireless access points, the delivery of 20 Chromebooks (which I have in my 6th grade classroom) and 50 Windows 7 laptops. We implemented Google Apps for Education, switching everyone in the building over to GMail on our domain. I've ordered (and built one of) two laptop storage/charging carts. Things are going...okay with that, though some teachers want to return the cart for the Windows 7 laptops. I gave each of them two machines to permanently stay in their rooms, so I have 30 left on the cart, but they are saying it's too big and cumbersome to move to their classrooms and back. I haven't heard anyone wishing we had our old XP lab back, though, so I guess we're making progress.
I've also been in graduate school for my Masters in Educational Design and Technology. If all goes to plan, I will be graduating from that program in May. The next plans there are to obtain my Wisconsin Teaching License (since I teach at a private school it hasn't been required of me to have it), and then take classes toward an online teaching certification.
Those three things take up the majority of my time these days.
@Mana: Good luck studying for the 3rd test! Your math parallel to your soccer team reminded me of a lot of classes I've taught. Not necessarily math, but you know what I mean.
@DaveK: Good luck with the black belt test!
I hope all of you looking for employment find it soon.
I track my workouts on DailyMile, I have a Twitter account and a Facebook, too! (But I'm only allowed to link two things.)

Only particularly interesting thing done recently is building a porch for a monastery and visited with the monks there.
Twas quite interesting, the Abbot there is one of the more left-leaning bishops in the church and we had some good talks.
Porch is 5'4" X 26' 11 1/2"(Width of building) with 5/4"X 6" ACQ decking and a really solid support structure made of pressure treated lumber.
Grant me to greet the coming day in peace.

This is not a subliminal message.

Not familiar personally - that's not where my career path went, but I have friends who did, and actuary was my Dad's career as well. In the UK I believe full qualification takes a minimum of 4 years if you pass all the exams first time, which very few people do. My Dad took about twice that long.

I'm mostly just killing time until I take a trip to Australia for four months. I've got the occasional temp work but it's not been very steady so I've mostly been playing LoL with folks.
I'm also applying to grad schools for Materials Engineering but that's boring and not interesting. Paperwoooork, you are evil.
