And High Command's been busy the past three years; the GUDF's got an army of new vehicles and weapons that the Nekomimi and Chocotopians haven't seen, not to mention that sphere-ship from the first RP.

That is incorrect; the GUDF regulations call for all personnel to be trained in hand-to-hand combat for when the traditional tidal wave of human troopers with energy weapons is ineffective.
