Oh man, Raven in that second panel. It must have been really hard growing up with an increasingly maddening and demanding mother. She always wanted the best for him, but after his father's death, I don't think there was much cozy warmth to their familial bond.
On a similar note, I wonder if half-immortals age at a normal human rate?
1 hour ago, Amiable Dorsai said:Once again, Dan has shown us another side of what at first glance is a completely odious character. Pandora's tragic origin is, I think, the topper, but Susan, Diane, Mr. Raven, and others all were first introduced to us as unpleasant people, but they got more interesting and sympathetic as we came to learn more about them. Even Larry seems to be rethinking things.
Exceptions to this include Damien, Sirleck, and Rich. I don't hold out much hope for any of them.
That's a really good point - I've always put it down to Dan learning how to write characters more complexly sympathetically as he was writing the comic. Susan's growth into a likable character felt to me like early-Dan just didn't know how to write without relying on stereotypes, and later-Dan fleshed the character out as he grew into more skill as a writer. But I think it's clear with Pandora at least that this "reveal" was intentionally paced out and placed where it is.

OUCH.
He didn't even get to die a hero - his death was in vain, unable to save anyone. That makes it hurt all the worse. Also, called it.

Only six panels in, and already I'm invested in this ship! (Helps that Raven is one of my favorite characters)
I'm calling it now that the reason Pandora didn't reset at 200 like she probaby should have is because she had a son to take care of, and Raven's father was dead or otherwise incapacitated or incapable.

I honestly was so confused why Ellen was being included in the poly diagram until I read the commentary. And then I was like, oh, of course, Ted/Elliot is an obvious ship. I'm glad at least that no one in this fandom pulls a Die For My Ship and tries to boot out Grace, because Grace is wonderful.

The griffin couple is incredibly endearing. I love them.
And Dan is doing super great on the griffin art in these strips, often times mythical beasts can come out a bit, stale? Lifeless? But Dan's got the knack down for emotive and expressive bird faces.

I'm so glad Ashley is enjoying the cool magic stuff so genuinely. There's a lot of (justified) paranoia regaurding magic in the EGS 'verse and it's nice to see someone legitimately geek out and love the magic system as they're being introduced to it. I have a feeling she'll get along fine with Tedd.

Ouch, poor Tedd. Casual transphobia is always a kick to the gut when it comes from someone close to you. I love that Dan is including a lot of this as background elements - because this is how it happens in real life. It's a constant background noise that never completely goes away. People mean well, and they don't know what they're doing, but it still hurts all the same.
And I think that Mr. Verres is being a bit too optimistic here - if Tensaided is making the jump, I'm sure people with less inside info but more will to dig are going to make that jump, too.
