Or Dan's laziness in naming characters that were meant to be minor but are now getting in the limelight. Regardless I have a dislike for the name based magic affinity for likely the same reasons Pandora dislikes it: it's too freaking obvious. Name based affinity is by it's nature cliché and boring. Now if it was something like a dog TF that would be entertaining because of how unexpected it is.

The only way I can think of that explains away the genetics side of things is that BOTH Susan and Diane were born to the blonde woman. How that fits in with Diane being put up for adoption is a bit fuzzy but maybe feasible.

I like to refer to these sorts of situations as blue herrings. You'd think it'd be a red herring but its blue, so its definitely not a red herring, but wait could the fact that its blue be there just to throw you off?

Also I can't wait for tomorrows comic to either present option D to this whole conundrum, or to curse Dan for teasing us with this tidbit and just leave us hanging for a few weeks.
