  1. Yeah, I meant Tedd being Ellen's "childhood friend" in a manner. I know he's (somewhat of) a different character, but how well can Ellen distinguish between that herself? (outside of the logical, intellectual knowledge, of course. I'm talking about dem emotions :p)

Ellen's Second Life greatly affected the way in which she now interacts with Tedd, I believe.

  2. We're going way off-topic here, but the forum where I'm most active is primarily active in profile posts (and comments on such posts). Everything is just casual conversation. Oh, and there's the anime thread, I guess. But that place is really tiny, even compared to this forum here :P

  3. Well, for a lot of relationships, especially Susan x Grace, you could probably write an essay about the intricacies of their relationship. However, if I had to sum those up in less than ten words, I'd describe them as "friends". Damnit.

I love your "friend by default" description for Ellen x Justin, though. It is an unusual situation. He was just kinda there when Ellen was hiding under a table or when they were at Grace' birthday party. Ellen x Sarah is a lot more interesting due to a specific piece of conversation Ellen once had with Elliot to make him understand that Sarah feels like his sister.

...Is Sarah Ellen's childhood friend because of Elliot's memories? Asking that, is Tedd Ellen's childhood friend due to Second Life? God, this is confusing.

I don't doubt that either of them would jump to the other's aid if needed, but that's a given because of their connections with the others, otherwise, they seem more like aquaintances.

Well, to be fair, I'm pretty sure any of the main 8 would help out any of the other main 8 members whenever needed... and basically the same goes for most other characters in the webcomic. To be honest, everyone is really nice in El Goonish Shive :P So yeah, you could easily just type "friend" for most character relationships, though that would be boring.

I'd just say that they're friends and leave it at that, I don't think there is anything special between them. Ellen's a lot closer to Grace mainly because of the time spent together before they started going to school.

I'm going to write an angry email to Dan complaining about how the relationship between Grace and Elliot isn't developed well enough ;p

To be fair, though, other once that aren't filled in yet may be a lot more interesting. I have no idea what kind of relationship Justin and Tedd have right now, for example. Didn't Tedd have some internalized homophobia that made him uncomfortable while near Justin once? I'm sure that got a proper conclusion, but I have no idea when the two last talked :P

Nanase and Sarah should probably include something about jealousy, though I should probably reread "Hair" first. Susan and Ellen... I honestly have no idea right now. I mean, they're good friends, but well. I honestly keep forgetting so much about El Goonish Shive, I have to re-read it again -_-

  6. So... pages in which Grace and Elliot are alone together? this one is the only one I can think of right now, but surely there are more. I seem to remember Grace and Elliot conversing when they first met, though that may not be that important.

    I'm honestly really annoyed at this gap in Elliot's row and collumn ^_^;

  7. I know this is incredibly interpretive, but I personally imagine Dan created many aspects of Tedd and Elliot before even knowing about a sex/gender distinction. I can definitely believe that he would have used "she" for Elliott back during the first Sister arc. I think Vladia's lack of caring about gender also reflects Dan's limited knowledge on the topic at the time. I definitely wouldn't be surprised if Dan hadn't heard about concepts like "non-binary" until six years ago or so.

I may fallaciously be conflating an over-arching theme of the comic (slow but stead growth and improvements in artstyle, story, etc) with an "arc of personality." As for what this mean for Dan's use of pronouns for genderbent characters... Well, that may change as well.

Maybe I'm just overanalyzing someone else's identity. Not sure if that falls under gossip or obsession. Either way, sorry about that >.>

  8. I didn't expect six people over 40 being active on an El Goonish Shive forum. I'm honestly very pleasantly surprised by the variation of people here. I know that people who started reading EGS when they were 20 back in 2002 would be 34 now, but the graph shows a much older audience than that :3

In related news, I was 7 when Dan started uploading EGSSeven. I find that interesting for some reason.

Yeah, there is a difference between Dan referring to himself as a person, to which he's fine with people using male pronouns, and his avatars in the comic, which would of course vary depending on their form at a given time. It's like referring to Tedd or Elliot with female pronouns whenever they're in female forms.

Referring to male characters that are transformed into a female form with feminine pronouns as soon as their genitals change is the kind of thing I'd imagine Dan doing at the start of the webcomic, but I have a hard time imagining a person who included a trans character in their webcomic would use that logic alone. Dan didn't refer to Elliot with feminine pronouns while he was Cheerleadra in past chapters, did he? It seems a bit more complex here: the character which represents Dan prefers female pronouns.

  10. I was surprised that this conversation didn't pop up again last week, though I guess there isn't exactly much to discuss (other than perhaps deep questions of identity, cartoons, and the internet), but at least linking this "development" may be of use:

    And, to quote:

As for the pronouns in the strip, I prefer to use pronouns for my avatar based on my avatars currenly form. I haven't done this previously, and this comic nearly went up with "they / them" pronouns, but then I realized I was only doing that due to the expectation that some people would find it odd for me to use "she / her". I decided I shouldn't let that expectation stop me from writing it how I actually wanted to write it.

I'm glad Dan went with what he wanted rather than what he felt was expected of him. I just noticed he made a typo. That irks me for some reason.

  11. I brought Grace up because she is the only one of the main 8 for whom I have difficulty discerning her relationship with Elliot. (I kept Justin open because their relation is complex and multi-faceted). I hope other people can find some stuff :)

Should be the other way 'round.  Diane has a "platonic woman-crush" on Nanase.

Where did this happen anyway? I know Diane likes Nanase, but I don't seem to remember this being a thing at all... Maybe I'm just forgetful.

  12. Currently it says Nanase "has a girl crush on" Diane? Where did that come from? Did I miss something? XP

Does anyone have any idea what the relationship between Eliot and Grace is like? Surely, the trust eachother, but other than that, I don't remember them ever even talking? These are the kind of things I made the diagram for. Surely these two have a well-developed friendship at this point or something?

Btw, we could be using background colors to indicate certain feelings as well. love is pink, anger is red, I dunno. Thoughts?

    I added a bunch for Elliot/Sarah, Elliot/Nanase, Ellen/Nanase, Tedd/Grace and Justin/Susan.

Now to clarify the "special bond" for Justin and Susan, they do have a kind of relationship the others don't have. Despite the fact that Justin is gay and Susan doesn't like physical contact and has trust issues when it comes to men (it's probably nowhere near as bad now as it was early in the comic), they still shared the closest thing to a romance than they've had with anyone else, and while they acknowledge they could never have that kind of relationship naturally, they've still become really close, Susan would likely tell Justin things before telling Sarah, and Susan has known Sarah for a lot longer.

Moved the discussion to a separate thread:

    Sorry for annoying you guys about it here, it was kinda a spur-of-the-moment idea ^_^;

  14. I just went for it and created what I described above. I haven't put any thought into it yet, but here's the link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1vZSyhAUz29WBT83IXKe5OasfYeLKBpiW6sqoUGDBPNA/edit?usp=sharing

Anyone can edit. It might be valuable to create a separate thread for it, but I don't know if people are interested in doing this kind of stuff.

Edit: Whoever wrote " Boyfriend and/or girlfriend " for Ted>Grace is awesome ^_^

  15. Just wanted to drop by to say that this list is amazing. I'm actually thinking of creating a excel-sheet (or something like that) listing all inter-character relationships. That honestly sounds like the logical thing to create next to this list of plot-lines. Some might get a bit complex (like Ellen and Ted), some are rather simple (Ted and Grace?; Ellen and Elliot? It depends on how much detail you want to go into. I like to imagine these two can be summed up accurately with "Tedsexual" and "she's family; help her" :p), but some relationships may seem non-existent at first. I'd love to see what people have glossed over and what connections there may exist that we haven't seen yet.

Uhm, but yeah, that should be separate of this awesome list of plot threads.

Edit: Though most characters have a "personal character arc"  as well, so we could probably make a list of those if we wanted to in yet another thread:P

  16. Honestly, what I want to see more of is fan art. There's some out there, but compared to some other communities, El Goonish Shive is rather disappointing in this regard... I suppose EGS fans just generally have a less big creative output than other fandoms (though I always have a hard time estimating the size of this group of fans compared to other webcomics)

To commence the speculation, I wonder what Nanase is going to do. She seems very suspicious of Ashley here, so I'm pretty curious where that may lead. Ashley's behavior is pretty suspicious, after all (not wanting to ask about magic because of secrets), eventhough it all makes perfect sense to us and her.

So what may Nanase do? I mean, the most logical thing for her to do would be to ask Edward if he knows anything about her (especially if she's already talking to him anyway), but that sounds like a very boring way to advance the plot. Edward would do a background check and find nothing of interest. Maybe Nanase will spy on Ashley? She has plenty of spells to use for that purpose, after all.

  17. I like where the designs are going. Both characters feel more enthusiastic than they normally are (Lisa is basically me right now, which feels all wrong). It also feels as though there's something wrong with their bust sizes....

I do hope Chika will appear, ye :3

I like the setting and am looking forward to the kind of questions we'll  be seeing the following weeks! I'm pretty sure this is the first Q&A that has come since I first caught up with the webcomic a few years ago.

That's an interesting thought. Another possibility is that it might be possible for someone to "ascend"  if they are able to meet certain prerequisites like magic power, mental capacity, maybe there's a very, very, VERY rare spell that can be gained. Maybe another Immortal or multiple Immortals can grant a person proper Immortality.

What you're describing is Friendship is Magic.

Though I wouldn't be surprised if it is possible to ascend to immortality as a human, I kinda doubt it. I would like to know where immortals came from, though!

  19. Well, Link is the stand-in for the player, more so than most other silent protagonists. It really is a shame we haven't seen any female Links yet in-game, and no, that Hyrule Warriors character doesn't count.

  20. Still though, fantasy aside, I can imagine Pandora being a really big fan of House. Comparatively, real-life is just really badly paced. Either too many things happen really fast simultaneously (like how in the world of the comic, multiple interesting things are happening at the same time), or nothing happens for months. Fiction simply has much better pacing!

If I were Pandora, I would be reading Cyanide and Happiness every weekday and watch Mayoiga in the weekends.
