I dunno, you might be able to pass that off as some kind of neo-cubist abstract nonsense.

It looks like there is a face in the wing and I'm not even sure how it even got there.

I don't even know where to begin for where John's face is concerned.

    Italics.

    So yeah, I guess so.

  2. So there is this website called Deepart.io that allows people to submit photographs and artworks, and renders photographs as they would look if painted in the artstyle of the second picture. The front page explains it quite well, and the list of latest created images has plenty of boring but pretty examples: https://deepart.io/latest/ It takes over three days to generate an image, or less if you want to pay up ^_^

Naturally, all I'm trying to do is abuse the system, with incredibly ugly results. Don't try to render a photograph in Super Mario World graphics. the results are horrendous. I tried to do some fun stuff with webcomics (like El Goonish Shive), but it just doesn't work well. I don't think the algorithm likes solid outlines and simplistic coloring. It just doesn't work at all, but I love trying: image

Trying to render Ted as a photograph of a regular human being, however, resulted in something surprisingly pretty. I'm alright with this one: https://deepart.io/result/636347/ I have a few more in the work, but I doubt any of them will look any better than this one.

So I'm challenging you guys to do better! I'd love to see someone using the El Goonish Shive artstyle to render something like Dan drew it, or to render an El Goonish Shive image in a different style. (or, you know, you can do something else with the algorithm - anything interesting :p)

  3. I didn't expect this guy still being alive, haha. It's somewhat funny to see something Dan established years ago suddenly pop up again. It's only a matter of time until Lord Ted will return, I tell you! XP

I'm looking forward to how the plot will move on.

  4. This is not entirely on topic, but based on the order in which all these events take place, I'd love to see somekind of graph for these two days of what happens when. It is confusing enough that Dan makes use of both the main comic and NP to tell the story, but I honestly don't even know anymore when any arc is taking place comparatively to the other arcs. It's been a while since I've done a re-read, after all...

Hmm, do we really need a score for every character on every question?

Though if we don't have a score for every character on every question, it could be hard to get enough points for or against for some of the minor characters.

It needs to be well balanced. It's fine not to give a score on every question for every character, but your chance of randomly getting any character should be approximately equal, or so I would feel. It would take some math...

Actually, I don't even know if that's a rule for this kind of thing - that's really just the game design-aficionado in me talking.

That one would be more difficult I think to just lump em in like that, because there's various types of games. Tendsaided seems all about tabletop games/rpgs, and with George, we've only seen him either play CCGs or pokemon. Both Sarah and Tedd play some CCGs, but also play video games, Sarah seems to like RPGs because she's played Skyrim and Tedd like strategy, god games and games that can be modded. Elliot and likely Ellen as well prefer multiplayer games like Mario Kart, Mario Party, Smash "Goons" etc, same with Nanase. Justin is probably an even mix of tabletop, CCG, and videogames. Grace likes mainly platformers though she seems to want to try every genre (see chrono trigger NP story and the Fallout NV NP) but I don't see her being into anything ultraviolent like Mortal Kombat or any of the Call of Duty games . Susan....I think her "Likes to watch" trait would also apply to this oddly enough as the closest we've seen her play any thing was in the "Legend of Celida" bit and she was more interested in riffing on the game while Sarah played than playing it with Sarah, the only thing we've seen her do is messenger role playing with Justin.

This could be worth a question all on its own, though I would prefer it if the question wasn't too straight forward. "What is your favorite kind of game?" "Trading card game" "Ultra violent game" - that would be boring. But maybe we can do something with this?

  7. Perhaps a good question would be how good a person is at games of skill. Characters such as Tensaided and George would clearly fall under that category, while Sarah has shown to have a talent for games (based on how she was able to win one round against one of the former, my memory is failing me). We have quite some content where Elliot and Ted are playing video games. I'd bet my money on Grace being supernaturally good at any game (and we know she loves video games).

Except... I don't really know any characters that are notably bad at games of any kind. I've never seen Ed Verres "play", but I have a hard time imagining him sucking at games. Same goes with Greg. Thoughts?

    Supreme gracefulness: ...Noah?

Inability to feel sad: ...whatever Justin's old girlfriend's name was, Grace, maybe Tedd? Those people who've put on false happy faces because this is really creepy.

For these two aspects, I'd say Sarah and Diane respectively. I think Sarah would put more value in "gracefulness" than in raw beauty. Also, I like to imagine Diane as the kind of person that views feeling sad as more of a weakness and a very unpleasant feeling. Honestly, this could also go for Susan.

I would do it where, in the point of time in the main comic that an NP arc occurs, put right into the comic stream, a comic which says, "There is a canonical arc of NP which occurs now. Click this image to go read that next, or click 'next' to skip it". Naturally enough, it links to the beginning of that NP arc.

At the end of each NP arc that the main comic points to in this fashion, there is a page that says, 'this is the end of an NP canon arc. Click this image to go to the first main comic after this arc, or click 'next' to keep reading NP'.

So, Question Mark wouldn't get that treatment yet since there isn't a comic right before it or right after it. But once there's a comic that happens after it, then it'll be slipped in and everyone will get a chance to see it.

This is an almost Homestuck-y way of dealing with archive readers and I really love it. This would require some change in site layout, perhaps, as some "in-between" page may not be pleasant, but if Dan could direct new readers to the right pages at the right time, this whole issue becomes a lot less big.

Nanase always had the option of asking Edward for more information, so that she could at least better understand why he feels Tedd shouldn't be told about his mother.

Same with Susan's situation, Nanase suggested that if they weren't going to tell Susan she might be adopted, her and Ellen should at least talk to Susan's mother. They were likely waiting for a good moment to do so, but recent events are kinda forcing the issue.

Susan's mother may not have any reason to to tell her now - she wouldn't know about the vampire-issue, would she?

  10. I used to relate very strongly to Justin (which is why I eventually voted for him), though now, it is incredibly difficult to make a choice. I was tempted to vote for Susan... as well as Tedd for obvious reasons and Grace and Nanase and... Oh boy, I like all Shive characters....

I disagree with the original post: the fact that all the characters are as unique as they are is the reason why it would be impossible to ever pick a favorite. Instead, i'd rather analyses and understand each and every one completely because they are all incredibly interesting and great.

  11. I think the way Dan is handling this is especially useful for webcomics. It can be difficult to follow multiple storylines simultaneously if you only get a short update on one each two days and there are multiple of them. Running them simultaneously yet separate, using an entirely different style, allows a reader to keep better track of what is happening. Though Rain LGBT is getting away with the former most of the time in my opinion, so I suppose it really depends on how interested the reader is in the story? Dan does "meanwhile" style things plenty anyway.

The more important reason Dan may be doing this, however, is because the webcomic form allows him to. As an independent comics creator, it would be difficult to run two different comics simultaneously in one book without going back and forth temporally. On his website, Dan can run three series simultaneously and is only limited by his own ability to finish the pages.

Or something like that, I haven't exactly thought this post through :P

  12. I was worried about this when "Question Mark" was coming out. To compare: I recently read multiple Pixie Trix comics, and the cross-over between Eerie Cuties and the spin-off comic Magic Chicks was very confusing. I just read through it anyway, of course, as that is what one does with a webcomic they generally enjoy, but it was a bit unpleasant as it felt both as spoilers for the other webcomic I hadn't read yet, and I wasn't seeing the full picture.

But you definitely can read one webcomic and not the other, and the same goes for El Goonish Shive. It's too bad that new readers in the future probably won't be able to discover Sarah's abilities with the same pace as we could, but I don't think it will ruin later story arcs. I hope not, anyway...

Regarding the in-universe time - I'm sure it could have been possible for Dan to tell a similar story while spreading out the events some more. Few of these arcs needed to take place in the same two days, but I understand why he made that choice and I respect that ^_^ But yeah, I hope Dan can keep the most important canon events in the main webcomic for ease of archive binges...

  13. I'm a bit confused - I was under the impression that it is more common for only signing up one half of a pair of twins for adoption, keeping one of the two children for yourself. At least, I can imagine parents thinking "we didn't sign up for this" when they are told they will have twins.

  14. I'm a bit late (like, a month or so), but I guess I've never been incredibly active here anyway ^_^; I'm very glad to see the forum is back online and I honestly like the new graphical style. I'm alright with starting over too. Just glad I have somewhere to discuss webcomics again :3
