... speaking about medical uses for enchantments ...
  2. NP Tuesday April 14 2020

Glad it's not just me that was confused then. I third that. But apparently, we are supposed to be confused. As long as it isn't a reset of the game and we have to go over this ground again, I'm fine with that, If she still has the all the money flowing in from the rent and the XP potions still work, she can get back fairly quickly ... but something tells me that's not what's planned. Of course, there is still the issue that she basically refused to get XP in any OTHER way than the potions, so if potions don't work now she won't get ANY.
  3. NP Tues April 7 2020

That's good argument against using enchantments for healing ... but you are missing one detail: Tedd already mentioned he knows how to make permanent transformations, based on her ability to permanently change gender. That would be another option, yes.
  4. Sketchbook Tuesday, Apr 14, 2020

I think those boobs are at least double-FV5 ... And yes, she can totally escape, but presumably the cage is just symbolic anyway.
  5. Story Monday April 13 2020

That seems to be the case here. That actually makes me feel better about Tedd's abilities Yes, it would actually be weirder if Tedd remembered every detail of every spell he saw. Apparently, what he knows about spells is subject to the same memory abilities as everything else he remembers. Note that he probably WOULD be able to make the wand with Elliot's spells as he remembers it, but he consider safer to look again than to make imperfect copy. ... hmmm ... the technologies around his gauntlet, they would be able to store spells verbatim, wouldn't they? I'm running both ways on this as I can see both options as being why Elliot would want a wand. That being said, I still think that there will end up being a 3rd option which we haven't considered as to why. I'm actually seeing it like this: "Why you want your own spell ... You want it for Ashley right?" "Oh, that would be also good idea ... but I was actually thinking about it being easier to not end up looking as Ellen" At least is not bottom-half-empty. That combination is dangerous.
  6. NP Tues April 7 2020

Tedd has mentioned (s)he doesn't like using magic for medical-ish reasons, but never explained why. It could be something like Bilbo and the One Ring, his life is lengthened, but at a cost; it was described like stretching what life he had, rather than adding to it. I find that unlikely, but it's true we can't rule it out based on (lack of) information in comic. Not necessarily. It's possible immortals were created from human imagination and therefore based on humans. It's possible they intentionally mimic humans up to the ability to breed with them - it can be something original immortals did and then forgot (it's quite likely that every immortal currently living went through forced reset sometime in past). I'm guessing Dan wouldn't decide even if someone would make HIM immortal. Also, I suspect that he will avoid the question of medical application of magic, because his reason why it doesn't work is that if it would work it would be nasty from DGB to keep that secret ... but there is no in-universe reason why that couldn't work, or why can't Sarah use her 17-year old saved form to live forever. As-is, he can just avoid the topic by not having any character hurt or old enough for the question to appear in comic. If I would be writing the comics, I would say that it didn't worked before the reset but works now, because generally magic should be working more logically without the explicit changes Will of Magic was doing to keep it secret. But I'm not, so ... Did you see the question, "If so, can they have sex without involving a mortal?" ? Not only do we not know what sex between two immortals produces, we don't know that they can or do have sex with each other. Canon is they are aware of each other, but mostly avoid each other as a threat, don't treat each other particularly well (what we would call low social skills) and occasionally hang out as a couple, which could be like spousal, or could be sibs, or something else? So even if it is possible, it may be something they generally do not desire. If not for Helena and Demetrius, we could assume they live alone, but with them, there is question about whose behaviour is more common. I even raised question if Voltaire isn't targeting Pandora because she's his ex. But yes, even if they are not siblings in traditional sense, it's possible that fairies see each other as siblings and don't develop romantic feeling for them. Or they consider each other too dangerous to get intimate with. That would be true even for sex with mortal Yes, it's either another fairy or something not named yet, which may be even more dangerous than Elf. Very unlikely, also it was explicitly said that aberrations used to be humans.

Boo! I say Boo to this!!! *starts petition to bring back demonic Susan* For bringing back demons, you don't use petitions. You use pentagrams. I know, similar words.
  8. NP Tues April 7 2020

You don't know what sex between two immortals produce. On the other hand, even humans can have sex without getting pregnant. It's possible they have children just because they consider it part of the "love" package. Or because they like having children. I would expect that some limitation would be the case, yes. On the other hand, she limited herself completely voluntarily before. Maybe it is? Seriously, even with just few dozen elves few thousand years ago, there should be fairy genes in basically everyone on the planet. Of course, not everyone with fairy genes is wizard. And remember that unnatural hair color are a thing in EGS universe. If those hair colors were related to fertility problems, someone would notice. If there is some problem in reproduction, it likely affects just first few generations, maybe even JUST the elves (direct children of fairies). I would expect that most elves would be capable enough to not let their children starve. But, yes ... ... it is possible that diseases are as dangerous to elves and their children as to mortals. Accidents almost certainly are. And even if they had better than average immune system or better regeneration (or reached that effect using magic), live in past was dangerous and percentage of people surviving until old age became issue was not so high. BTW, I don't think immortals are genetically that much similar to human. It's quite obvious that there is some effect causing elves being very different from their parents and their children even more so. Assuming it's genetical (which I don't think it is: I think it's magic - and after all, Uryuom egg can mix different species, Immortals can have similar ability), maybe fairies have more than 23 pairs of chromosomes but 23 of them are compatible with humans, elves have just one chromosome of those additional kind instead of two but still get some effect, and their children have standard number of chromosomes and are mortal. Dying in fifty years would be quickly by Elf standards, wouldn't it? I don't think they would call it "can not reproduce", however.
  9. Story Friday April 3rd 2020

Ooo, I see a future in marketing in your career. "Buy Windows. It's an operating system." I'm acknowledging the situation, not promoting it. And, yes, if Windows is operating system, then 99 Bottles of Beer is story. Hmmm ... well, ok, Windows 98. I would actually be bad in marketing and I would never promote windows. Or systemd. Which I believe has little to do with how this topic started. Wasn't the quote you responded to talking about Heinlein's book? No, I believed the topic started with evaluating how did Uryuom convinced Earth governments to follow their laws. And I'm saying that if they would be refugees, it would be very unlikely. Also, it's obvious that there were contact with Uryuom homeworld recently, way AFTER the change which prevented Uryuoms from using Earth magic. (Also, I totally consider the whole situation with Uryuom weird, in a "Can't think about explanation making it logical" way. I hope Dan has some but I'm afraid he doesn't.)
  10. NP Tues April 7 2020

Not necessarily. Current number of elves is low, despite the claims that they are infertile, which should ENCOURAGE making them. This suggest that either higher number of elves is not normal and was caused by some additional motivation which disappeared (like, it became fad to have some), OR that they became problem and as reaction to that problem fairies stopped making them (so much), either based on remembering it's not good idea or due to some rule change making it harder. Now, assuming that Greek heroes WERE elves, it's obvious the elves were not problem before. That would suggest their numbers was not so big before that either. Note also that in time of Ancient Greek, there were perhaps three "cultures" on whole Earth - one around mediterranean sea, one somewhere in south-east asia and one in and around middle america. Like, ok, Egypt and Greece were not completely same culture, but they had close contact, influenced each other a lot and would allow contact between elves. Actually even the south-east asia culture was connected to the mediterranean one.
  11. Story Friday April 3rd 2020

True, but people actually do speed through red lights. People do not use rocket cars on the road. For numerous reasons. One of the earleir Darwin awards was a guy using JETO rockets to make his car go faster. 'Nuff said? So there are at least SOME people who use rocket cars on the road Ok, were. Real rocket cars and their ilk, including down to dragsters and such are notoriously uncontrollable. This is why, when you attempt to break the land speed record, you do so on a very flat wide open plain, such as Bonneville Salt Flats. Of course, with a rocket car, you have an additional consideration of needing downward pressure to ensure that you remain a land vehicle for the records. Compared to normal cars, even Apollo was hard to control. Well, OK, then; I probably won't want to read your narratives. Well, Groundhog Day wasn't bad. Why my narratives? I'm just saying that just because some narrative is bad it won't stop being narrative, in the same way that rotten apple is still apple despite not being safe to eat. (Well ... ok, eventually the apple will rot to state when it's no longer recognizable as apple ...) Rocks are not ideal weapons. They are expedient weapons. In The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, they entail making calculations to use existing payloads and equipment for bombardment. Look at it this way. You might need to defend yourself. You have all kinds of options. You need to defend yourself in the next few seconds. You'll grab whatever you can. "You need to defend youself in the next few second" is exactly the situation anyone parking a spaceship on Earth orbit is NOT.

I'm starting to hope you will hate next story line even more than this one.
  13. NP Sat April 11 2020

Is this something that can happen in Fable? I guess, if you hack it?
  14. NP Sat April 11 2020

That cheating bastard removed ability points Susan legally obtained by drinking legal potions bought by legal money? Also, somehow removed her evil status? She may also not have her purity now. Which was also obtained totally legally, according to all rules of the game.
  15. Story Friday April 3rd 2020

We were, however unrealistically, talking about a motor vehicle. The very few rocket powered cars that have been built were not street legal. Neither is speeding nor riding through red lights legal. Also, we are talking about changing direction. The rockets would need to be directed perpendicularly to your direction, like from side window or something. Those few rocket powered cards have them pointing to back. (Wait, am I argumenting for your side? ) ... not enough of a story to earn the title, ' Narrans' . I disagree. Yes. However, in Armageddon, they were trying to save Earth, not White House. Bigger target. That's actually exactly what most meteorites are doing. We egoistically talk about how they fall on Earth, but they are on their own extremely eccentric orbit, minding their own business, when suddenly Earth hits them with it's 30km/s from side. (Ok, most meteorites are not stationary, but their speed relative to Sun is usually smaller than Earth's.) Yes, Tungsten poles are very dense and have very small cross-section in direction of fall. Standard rocks, not so much. Which is exactly why I keep saying they are not ideal weapons if you need some precision. Again, even harder if you are trying to hit specific target (and not just "anywhere on Earth will do") with simple rock.
  16. NP Tues April 7 2020

This is better argument that the number of wizards and persons with magical abilities , but I still wouldn't rule out relatively small number of elves still getting to be "famous". Look at our mythology: there are perhaps few dozens Greek heroes claiming to be children of gods (with Zeus being that god in roughly half cases). Granted, with them concentrated in relatively short time period already suggest that at least in that time, there were more elves on Earth than in my "minimal" estimate (assuming that those heroes WERE elves in EGS history - they might also be fairies themselves or whatever Heka is) but I don't agree there would need to be more of them than few dozen at once, and it IS possible that the times Greek mythology was about were single time with most elves around. Now, quite a lot of Greek heroes died, and there were wars which could easily killed more. (Speaking about which, yes, Adrian was not able to enter military ... because magic was not involved. It's possible that in, say, Trojan war, elves were free to fight BECAUSE there were some on both sides. Or the rules changed since then.)
  17. Story Friday April 10 2020

In this situation, I think Susan wouldn't say it at all while Nanase maybe only as a joke. Let's not forget that Justin wants a "natural" "Your Hot" effect. Last time I check very few women have 4 boobs. Exactly.
  18. Story Friday April 3rd 2020

Depends on terrain. But, yes, mostly. Depends on what you mean by reaction and what situation we speak about. If we are talking about general question if it's possible to react in speeds close to speed of light, the answer is definitely yes. You may even be able to change direction, if you have rocket engine or something else generating trust. Of course, in this scenario, your only possible reaction is to regret that you 1) tried something this stupid 2) did not pack a rocket engine 3) did not pack shielding capable of withstanding going through atmosphere in this speed. The question if you have time for that is philosophical: according to some theories, your entire life replays in front of your eyes before you die. Granted, you can build a story around tweets. Humans are good at finding patterns even if there isn't an intrinsic one. I view the noise of the far right much like a vinyl record skipping. There really isn't a sense that there was a tune being played, you're just lost in the repetition of a short segment that keeps repeating. Read this for a sense of what I mean. There is a story there, but the main player has made himself a sad pawn with little voice, hasn't he? The one guy close to him who has some sense about this is likely to be $#!t canned for telling him he's wrong. Repetition is the simplest pattern possible. And I assume you know the famous song 99 Bottles of Beer? The song also tells a story. Not complicated story, but a story nevertheless. If the big rock breaks up, it may do more damage, but also at different place than original target. Speaking about which, while classical orbital bombardment uses falling effect, other kinds of kinetic attacks as well as meteorites itself do not rely on it. If you put stationary object in front of Earth, the Earth will hit it with speed of 30km/s. For comparison, terminal velocity of object in free fall is about 80m/s. Meteorites falling on Earth won't get faster by falling - they get slower by air resistance.
  19. Story Friday April 10 2020

Nanase would most certainly suggest 4 boobs. Wait, Susan knows about that option as well, would she suggest it as a joke? In this situation, I think Susan wouldn't say it at all while Nanase maybe only as a joke.
  20. Story Friday April 10 2020

I think Elliot wouldn't have anything or would say same stuff like Ellen. But Susan might have interesting ideas, yes ...
  21. Story Wed April 8 2020

Yeah she's got a lot a different beams, but also each of them has conditionals in terms of hand gestures, I don't think she'd have duplicate spells for each gesture. Probably not, but logically, I would expect all those beams would be variant of single spell, not multiple spells. Meaning, it's not divided logically, or possibly there is something we don't know which makes the division of spells more logical. It would make more sense, but we are not sure if "sense" is something taken into account when forming the spells. Not completely, as the new enhanced "summon weapon" spell may not work on tools. Yes it would make sense but that doesn't necessary means it actually works that way.
  22. Story Friday April 3rd 2020

You are a projectile. You have no time to react. You don't even have time to register that you might need to react. You have time to react if you are reacting to something which is eight light minutes from you, like Sun. On the other hand, how long will you need to leave the atmosphere? It's just 100km if you go directly up, granted it's more when you somehow start on road. And the speed is not 0.9c, it's 0.6c. I think this would need some actual computation and some details about the car. Sure, you will be dead before you slow down, but comparing the time needed for car to collapse and time needed to leaving atmosphere wouldn't be so easy. (Also note that just like in the relativistic baseball story, we are assuming some magical way you get to that speed, because if you started at zero and accelerated, you would be dead long before actually reaching that speed.) The more polished ones tell stories. We happen to have one in particular who likes to tweet. He's been having a field day with Covid-19. Yeah, that one seems less realistic than Rapunzel, but it's still story, made from multiple tweets together. Neither one is precise if it's not precise. Both are precise if you make them precise. It is more difficult, takes more effort, to make a bombardment from lunar orbit precise than from an inner orbit. The payoff in terms of destructive power is greater. Rocks are not homogeneous enough and might shatter when falling. Maybe. It's an obvious concept to any one that understands 1/2mv2. I think, but am willing to be proved wrong, that the first use of kinetic strikes in SF was in Moon. One story was definitely first but the concept is obvious enough someone might came up with it independently without reading previous usages. Just because someone was not first doesn't mean he didn't "created" it independently.
  23. Story Friday April 10 2020

Diane: "It's like me!" On one hand, Diane's suggestions are getting little stereotypical. On the other, it's what she has experience with. And it's true she has the most experience here. Well, maybe Nanase might have more but she's not playing. Meanwhile, Ellen basically suggests stuff based on her experience with being male. While Tedd is practical and likely already though about it. There are likely more than the three rounds of recommendations, these are just the three we saw.
  24. Story Wed April 8 2020

I suspect her spell book isn't loaded with a lot of spells anyway, we know she got the hammers, and likely the spell for summoning things out of specified storage, and I wanna believe that the fairies are it's own spell that hooks into the summon from storage spell, rather than it being a subspell, though if weapons summoned have added features, then maybe fairies aren't that different and it may just be those two spells, and she saw the part about the weapon aura as she was looking for the fairy stuff. I wonder if the difference between spell and subspell is some objective truth or just how Nanase read the book Yes, it's possible she has two spells - hammers and summoning from the storage, with both fairy and the sword aura being subspells of summoning from storage. On the other hand it may also be four spells. Or maybe she has dozens spells, with most being just special variant of the basic summoning from storage and are not really notable. Remember Ellen. The thing is, any weapon summoned from the box is magic already, I think mainly what the aura means is that the sword should last longer when fighting aberrations, because normally a summoned weapon would go poof after hitting someone/thing but during the mall fight, Susan took out one vampire and Adrian took out 2 more and the sword remained. that kind of an effect doesn't really require a whole new spell, especially if the fairies are still considered "summon from box" entities and yet she could potentially use them like Nanase's fairy avatar. It's possible there are other effects but yes, the durability enhancement would be main one. It's possible that both spells were in the book when she read it. It would be more likely than getting another spell in the exact week she started reading the book, on the other hand she also used her magic more during that week ... D&D rules are totally irrelevant for EGS.
  25. NP Tues April 7 2020

He can't be the only elf left alive, there are to many wizards and persons with magical abilities. Granted the blood lines that result in wizards and persons with magical abilities might all be started by elves that are now dead, but it seems unlikely that there was a mass die off of elves. Depending on when first elf appeared, it might've not been that massive. Like, if there were four elves every millennium since -12000BC (neolithic times), then Adrian being only one alive wouldn't be that far from that average and the total numbers would still be over fifty. EDIT: Note that I see this as "minimal" hypothetical scenario, I think there were more elves than that - but I can't prove that.
