Could we maybe hold off on sexist stereotypes until we see whether they actually hold true for more than one person each?

It's the theme of the strip: "Cursed Primary Biological Directive." Hopefully we'll move on to another gag, or some actual plot development.

only thing we know is that it would not work on not-Tengu, but we have no idea WHY ...

Here's an idea: Not-Tengu's abilities were all part of a spell he was using. According to Edward Who Knows Everything, a.k.a Tedd's dad, only wizards can learn (= copy) spells. If Ellen had used the copy spell, assuming she could penetrate the magical shell around the actual ugly one-eyed French guy, she could have turned into an ordinary ugly one-eyed French guy with no special powers. Jerry just said copying not-Tengu was a bad idea, not exactly what would or would not happen if Ellen had tried.

Maybe the first beam did work, but the FV5'd not-Tengu turned male again before the shell dissipated.

Here is hoping GayDar boy show up again, would love to see how that reacts to Grace, Ted, etc. and Susan ;)

Also Diane and Lucy. I also wonder why Luke got his power instead of gaydar.

I wonder how long it will be before there's a gaydar app for iPhone and Android. Maybe the earring industry is suppressing the technology.

I'm more inclined to believe that she [Ellen] cares enough for Nanase that her emotions were naturally supercharging the beam. It was a clutch moment.

Yes, and perhaps again when facing not-Tengu. Yeah, Jerry was on the scene, but...

Another thought: Just maybe Pandora is teaching Magus some hard lessons. Magus doesn't really show any anything more than arrogance and concern for himself until he refuses to kill Abraham.

  5. Well, it's twenty minutes before dinner, so to pass the time, I'll fire off another crackpot theory.

Maybe "Magic Itself" is something like Skynet, a magical automoton set up by the Immortal community to keep the peace between them and maybe protect the humans to some degree. And, like Skynet, maybe it's become sentient.

Of course, it wouldn't be exactly like Skynet. Especially in the whole "exterminate the humans" thing. We hope. Heck, maybe it's more like Mike, the sentient computer in The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.

Maybe the term 'brain dead' was meant derogatively.

Sirleck's host being brain-dead is why Sirleck can't leave the old man without losing access to his wealth, home, dancing secretary, etc.

I wonder how long Sirleck has been using that host? Could it be that he keeps wearing out his hosts, perhaps rapidly aging them?

  7. 1 hour ago, Scotty said:

the first T-Minus chapter which shows the moment he takes possession of the old guy who was basically in the process of dying until Sirleck stopped it.

Maybe The Shive could have made that more explicit. Sirleck's remark could have meant that the old man had just become brain-dead. But it could also mean that the old man was already brain-dead. If Sirleck thought it was safe to "take a break" before that scene and was re-possessing the old-man, why wouldn't Sirleck have just possessed the guard? Would have saved a bribe, wouldn't it? And if this was the first moment Sirleck possessed the old man, how did he raise the money for the bribe?

But, of course, only The Shive really knows.

Sirleck changed hosts after the bribe occurred

Umm, enlighten me and perhaps the rest of us, is that in canon? I'm not being intentionally snarky here, but I do keep re-reading the series quite a lot. It is possible without technically breaking canon as I understand it. Sirleck isn't seen at all until long after Ellen's creation. While he's never seen using another host, he could have switched hosts during one of his "breaks" from his currently brain-dead ride if Mr. Yet-Another-Character-With-No-Name-After-Multiple-Appearances-Over-Years-and-Demonstrated-Importance-to-the-Story if (Okay, my brain is channelling that Monty Python sketch about the long dead guy with an impossibly long name ending with "of Ulm) (Let's call  Sirleck's host "BDN" for "Brain Dead Now") While BDN was NYBD (Not Yet Brain Dead.)

  9. 1 hour ago, Scotty said:

I doubt he would have done so if he had killed the guard rather than pay him.

Once the guard has performed the task, he became a loose end that begged to be tied up. Sirleck depends on not being detected. An incident involving a secret magical artifact would be certain to attract the attention of the DGB (Dad's Government Bureau?). Even if he didn't get his (embezzled) money back, Sirleck should have taken some measures to break the chain of evidence that could lead back to him.

However, since the tenor of EGS is closer to Scooby-Doo than The Big Sleep, I doubt we'll be tripping over many dead bodies.

Then wait for somebody to develop necronium fission NEMA reactors

For those of you who have never seen a copy of GURPS Technomancer, the Earth with NEMA reactors also has certain unpleasant magic-induced problems such as toxic zombies, atomic liches, Stalin coming back to (un)life, and killer penguins.

Perhaps the Emissary is Edward's subconscious mind.

Interesting thought. The way DW explains it, he doesn't remember what he's doing in Grace's dreams when he's not in them. That kind of implies he's dreaming too.

I'm going to put an even bigger curve on that pitch: DW could be part of Pandora's subconscious. The battle of the flaming horde that Pandora vaguely remembers from a long-ago life could have been Pandora both giving the horde fire magic and then her subconscious realizing it was a big mistake. Which would mean that Pandora is "magic itself", at least in the Moperverse.

Long odds that The Shive has this in mind. Sounds like the kind of premise a psychology major would come up with.

I suspect Dan would rather explore how Uryuom fought in second world war than explain the creation of universe.

Ellen said on her first day of school that in her other life, Uryuom fought in the American Revolution. Their Second Amendment probably gives the right to bear any number of arms, legs, antennae, tails, etc.

  13. It's probably not what The Shive has in mind, but maybe magic is basically created by humans, whether or not they can use it. This could provide another reason for the Immortals to suppress vampires: they deplete a renewable resource that Immortals use. Perhaps the Immortals themselves are unconscious creations of humanity. Or, in other halves and other universes, unconscious creations of griffinity, pony-inity, centaurinity, space whale-inity, etc.

  14. Is Good Tom's g/f Matt Cohen's sister?

Premise is basically that Matt Cohen isn't shown having any kind of relationship with any other girl.

Even more Sherlocking: She could be a year older than Matt, be in Rhea's college now, have met Diane through Rhea, and pass on to Matt that there's a girl who looks and sounds almost exactly the same as Susan the Hammer Queen. Also, even if she isn't in Susan's club, she thinks Susan is cool, or at least too cool for Matt.

  15. Yet again, here's the conundrums of DW and "magic itself":

    • If "magic itself" can do anything, why is it choosing this fantastically obtuse and ineffective way to get out the warning? Can't act through a Space Whale?
    • If Pandora is so dangerous to the "will of magic", why doesn't "magic itself" just take away her powers? Then only thing that makes sense is that Pandora is as powerful or more powerful than whoever or whatever "magic itself" really is. How can a being dependent on magic be more powerful than "magic itself?

Pandora kind of sounds less like the mythical Pandora to me now than Prometheus or Loki, both sentenced to dreadful punishment for giving the power of fire to man. Hmm... that horde was gonna throw fire when suddenly they couldn't...

  16. I'll point out what's obvious (to me, at the least):

    • Pandora does not say anything about unmarking.
    • Pandora hasn't said that she caused the ambient energy problem.
    • Gee, doesn't Pandora remind you of George talking about his Magical Shield of Ignorance? Henceforth, DW will stand for "Dumbass Wizard".

Also, how does DW "know" about Pandora's childlike form? We don't even know if DW's physical form is in the same universe. Grace has seen Child Pandora only on TV, and in canon, Pandora has been visible to mortals of the present day only three times (After the "egg fell from its nest", after Abraham struck at Moperville South, and in Sarah's bedroom earlier on the same night this is taking place. Even Immortals aren't supposed to (usually) be able to see other Immortals if they don't want to be seen. Yeah, yeah, "magic itself." Right...

  17. Another possibly crackpot theory: Elliot might be the cause of the clog. Remember when Voltaire said after his Plan A failed that if it had succeeded he would have accomplished his goal with just one murder?

Okay, weak, unless Voltaire is the agent of "magic itself"--or is the real "magic itself" -- That is, the real phony "magic itself."

It could still technically be the case, the fact that magic energy flows between the two halves could suggest that the 2 wills are working together to maintain balance.

Sounds to me like the reason for the imbalance between the two halves may be is that there isn't enough magic being used in the Moperville half. Much like the buildups suffered by Elliot, the whole world-half is getting oversaturated with unprocessed magic. Which would mean either "magic itself" is not only a dick but a stupid dick because it's "solution" would only make the problem worse for everyone, including "magic itself."
