  1. As far as I know there hasn't been any communication from whoever is currently "running" the site on the hardware/software side of things in years. Unless I missed it, we never got an explanation for that time the site was offline for close to a year back in 2020-2021, let alone any of the occasional smaller outages since, so I don't know why this one (which I also missed) would be any different.

“Sick” as slang definitely dates from the period when Dan was a teenager.

Perhaps due to being about the same age as Dan (I think he's a couple years younger than me), I didn't even notice the non-current slang.

Of course, considering that EGS is set in an ambiguous "present day" time period in an alternate universe, and the entire school-experience of the main cast is more reminiscent of the  90s than the 00s (let alone the 2020s), I think it would actually feel more out-of-place if everyone was using up-to-date slang.

I am shocked. Shocked, I tell you! You're not waiting to stream it?

Keep in mind that in the world of EGS, streaming (not counting Youtube-like websites) hasn't been around very long (the first story to mention it was set in December of the previous in-story year, and in it Sarah and Grace are clearly just learning about how streaming services work) and there hasn't been a pandemic to help make it near-ubiquitous.

  4. And I just beat FF with the above mentioned team. I wound up only doing two of the bonus dungeons before giving the final boss another try; a few more experience levels and the more powerful healing items you get in those dungeons made a huge difference. I'm not sure if I'm going to bother doing the rest of the bonus dungeons; they really aren't nearly as good as the original parts of the game.

  5. So since I got it this winter, I've been trying to play through the main story-mode of Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition. However, I might have to give up on it, as I'm not enjoying it all that much. It's clearly a well made game (the music in particular is great), but I find the way it gives you multiple time-sensitive missions you have to juggle extremely stressful.

More recently, I've been playing Final Fantasy 1 (PSP version) with the team of two Thieves/Ninja and two Monks/Masters (I named them Leon, Raph, Don, and Mikey). It's an interesting challenge; I had to go into each dungeon with far more healing items than I'm used to since none of those classes has healing magic, and near the end of the game I'm running into the problem that none of the healing items you can buy are strong enough to keep up with the damage output of the end-game bosses. I had initially planned to skip the bonus dungeons so the main game would be more challenging, but after getting trashed by the final boss several times in a row I decided to tackle the bonus dungeons after all, rather than wandering around the final dungeon level grinding.

In gaming news, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is out. I'm excited to play it, but my money is tight and I'm in the middle of a bunch of games already, so I think I'm going to wait a couple months to get it.

  6. Personally I think the combo of that skirt with that top is worse than what the tie does or doesn't do for the ensemble (though it's possible her footwear and any socks/stockings/etc. might tie things together).

1 hour ago, Darth Fluffy said:

I also have an impression that ties are perhaps more popular within the less beans community. (Vladia's take on her own sexuality remains unstated, unless it's come up on Discord.)

If this was a joke I apologize in advance for asking for an explanation, but I'm honestly confused. "Less beans"?

  7. It seems odd to me that Tensaided would suddenly be so calm and deadpan when he was all exited in the previous strip (and hadn't even guessed right what the Woman in Black's deal was). I mean I could see him playing along with her own deadpan delivery, but there should have been a moment of adjustment, and I would have expected a few thought balloons showing how exited and/or worried he was.

I doubt this is what Dan intended (since this is the end of this story, there's no good reason for it, and Dan didn't talk about it in the commentary), but I have a hard time not interpreting this comic as the woman using some sort of calming or mind-control magic on Tensaided.

  8. I'm glad Ellen made the change, and the reasons I'm glad are also my speculation for why she might have:

The damsel in distress trope has been so overused over the years that I often find it boring and/or annoying. Furthermore, since it's usually a guy doing the rescuing, it also has a tendency to come off as a bit misogynist (though having female heroes does somewhat mitigate this). Honestly when it comes to new stories/games, these days the only time I don't mind a damsel-in-distress-plot is if it's an extremely lighthearted story where it being cliche is part of the point, or if there's an interesting new twist on the trope and it's extremely well written.

  9. Personally, I think good puns are where multiple meanings of the same word or two words that sound the same are used, and bad puns are where a word needs to be mangled or replaced by a similar-sounding word to make it work.

Of course I'm in the (seemingly unusual, if people's reactions are any indication) position of being fairly neutral when it comes to puns; I rarely find them funny, but except for the worst of what I consider "bad puns", they rarely bother me either.

  10. So, I notice this question makes Susan blush and stammer a bit. Given her reaction to the "ditzy" effect in Goonmanji 2 and similar magic in other non-canon stuff, I suspect she actually enjoys the effect of having multiple fairies out, and has done it on purpose since discovering it (presumably in the safety of her own bedroom or a similar controlled situation).

  11. I was surprised to learn in the comments the reason that Zeus didn't spell out the rules (according to the characters' speculations) was left out of this comic. I actually assumed reading the comic that the rules being secret was why: if he isn't supposed to say there are new rules, surely saying what they were would be even worse.

In fact, maybe revealing the new rules are against the new rules. "The first new Immortal rule is: don't talk about the new Immortal rules."

The Egyptian demigod who told Pandora about Tedd might know enough about the Mopercrew to send a message from a misidentified source.

"Mopercrew" is an interesting term. It reminds me of a Pokemon name.

Yet, here we are using comments in a web comic channel to make contact with humans and canines. (Unless Explorer is the one posting your comments; it's difficult to be sure on the Internet. So humans and canines and felines, to err on the safe side.)

I don't know about Explorer, but there's at least one feline who posts on the forums. Granted, I'm fictional, but as we're still managing to communicate I'd say it still counts.

Also, not to be all hipster like, I disliked Cosby before it was cool to dislike Cosby.

As a kid in the 80s, I thought he made a good TV-Father-Figure, though not nearly as good as Mr. Rogers or as cool as Optimus Prime. I don't think I found him particularly funny though, and after I stopped watching The Cosby Show I rarely thought about him again until the accusations against him started being prominent in the news.

  14. So I've still been playing games a fair amount, but I haven't really had much to say about them until now. However, I've recently been playing a couple different versions of the game known in the US as Super Mario Bros. 2, and I felt like talking about them.

First, over the past couple of months I played a fan translation of Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic (the game that was remade to create the US Super Mario Bros. 2). I already knew about the most obvious change: the fact that the main characters originally looked different and were entirely unrelated to the Mario franchise (despite one of them sporting a mustache very similar to Mario's). However, it was interesting seeing all the other differences.

One thing that I though was pretty neat in Doki Doki Panic that I'm disappointed they dropped when they made SMB2 is that between worlds you are given a chart of all the levels, which keeps track of which levels you have completed with each character; this also serves as a character and stage select screen. I suppose the reason they dropped it is because the NES version of SMB2 had no save feature (or password system), and beating every level four times in a single play session would be a bit much to ask. Still, I don't understand why they never brought it back for the later versions of SMB2.

Another interesting change is that originally the story was about a family that jumped into a book to save two kids who had been taken into the book-world by the evil frog Mamu; this story is told through sprite-animation at the beginning, rather than the text used for the backstory in SMB2.

There were also a lot of visual differences beyond the main characters. For instance, instead of mushrooms, mushroom blocks, and giant bird-head-gates, there were lots of masks of various styles scattered around the world. Also, the grass, cherries, and vines didn't move, while the waterfalls flowed much faster than in SMB2.

Over-all, I really enjoyed playing it, though I think that other than the lack of a stage-select, SMB2 feels more polished.

After beating that, I moved on to the most recent remake of SMB2, Super Mario Advance. The changes made for that version feel just as drastic as the ones made when changing Doki Doki Panic into SMB2. There are new "giant" Shyguys, a new boss, new potion/mushroom locations, and the occasional change to the landscape. You start with only one bar of health (thus starting as small Mario/Luigi/Toad/Peach), but thanks to the new mushrooms can build to a higher max health. And of course the graphics and music have been given a huge overhaul relative to the NES SMB2 (though I think they're pretty close to the SNES version).

I think SMA is probably the best version of the game so far, but there is one change they made that really annoys me: they replaced the NES/SNES title screen and in the process dropped the section telling the story of the game. So in an era when it was no longer common practice, you had to read the instruction manual to find out the story -- a fact which is particularly ironic since this was the first version of the game not to include the story in the game itself!

Tape had a distinct advantage that you could tape shows from your feed, antenna or cable, to replay. I had dozens that I recorded for our kids. If you had a camera, you no longer needed to develop your film.

    [...]

I don't recall Blu Ray ever having an impact on rental stores. It came out too late. I have never seen a Blu Ray video. No compelling need to invest in one, I'd get it maybe because I like having the media for movies that I like, but everything is available online now.

I am tempted, however, to set up an antenna, for old times sake. Would be worth it, just for local news shows.

I still have a ton of VHS tapes I recorded off the TV back in the 90s and 00s, though I rarely go back and rewatch them. (I keep thinking one day I will though, hence not having gotten rid of them.) I also have a Digital Converter box that I can hook up to my old VCR, and will still record shows to watch them later every so often (I honestly find it more convenient than a DVR, thought that might just be thanks to familiarity).

I also have a Blu-Ray Player; I got it because there are a handful of movies I want the best possible quality for (though admittedly on my not-exactly-cutting-edge TV the difference is minimal) and because a lot of times these days they only put the special features on the Blu-Ray versions, and I love special features.

As for watching stuff online, well, that just wouldn't be practical with my limited internet.

Incidentally, living in the middle of the woods my only options for TV are antenna and satellite; as it's cheaper (you just pay for the antenna once and that's it), we've always gone with the antenna.

Yesterday's rain was weird. Normal rain, you can feel droplets. Yesterday, we had rain with tiny drops, mist-like, kind of like being in a cloud, but it was not just fog, they were clearly falling.

That sounds like what we call "drizzle"; it's fairly common around here.

  17. Not necessarily; people can be fertile for several decades (even most of their lives for those who are biologically male). While a generation might average out to 20-30 years, if many people in a family have kids early there will be more generations in a given period of time, and if many have them late there will be fewer. As such, the further back in time we go the bigger the range of possibilities.

The number of generations would still give us a range of possible years of birth for Raven, but considering we already have strong evidence he was born in the Middle Ages, I wonder if that range would really narrow things down all that much?

  18. I like pineapple on pizza, but I've only had pizzas where it was used relatively sparingly (just enough to add a little sweetness, and not necessarily in every bite if you take small bites). This discussion has me wondering if maybe a lot of people's bad experiences with pineapple pizza were instances where there was so much pineapple it dominated the flavor. It's sort of like raisins in raisin bran: a moderate amount provides a nice contrast of flavors, but too much and you just have dessert (and one that requires a high sugar tolerance, at that). (Of course I'm sure some of the people who don't like pineapple pizza just don't like pineapple in the first place.)

I suppose there's also the matter of whether you like the combination of savory+sweet.

Incidentally I've never had actual "Hawaiian" pizza with ham. I've only had it as the only topping, or alongside onions.

  19. Temperatures hovering around 0 F today and tomorrow during the daytime (much colder at night), with high winds. Apparently the wind chill is something like -30, with the wind chill potentially getting down to -50 overnight. The weather report said that at these conditions, frostbite can set in on exposed skin in 5-10 minutes.

Needless to say, my plans involve spending a little time as possible outside, staying out for no more than a few minutes at at time, and bundling up as much as possible when I do.

(Incidentally, while we usually get subzero temperatures for a few days or even a week or so during January and/or February, I can't ever remember a time when the windchill was this bad. It's also a very strange flip from the rest of the winter thus far, which was far warmer than usual.)

Biologically, with no magic involved, the fact that Adrian has sired at least two children (Diane, and some distant ancestor of Susan) is pretty much proof that the Immortals' chromosomes are pretty close to human, and the count is exactly the same.

Of course, "with no magic involved" and "Immortals" don't go together very well.

7 hours ago, Darth Fluffy said:

Pandora is not 'not entirely human' - as portrayed in EGS, Immortals are fundamentally immaterial, existing outside of a physical realm. But, hey, recognize that it is fantasy, and the rules are as described by the author, in this case Dan, and they can manifest themselves physically. The parameters and level of fidelity of this manifestation are not yet specified; we don't know how DNA is involved.

The immortals we've seen have looked human-like when manifested, but recall that Voltaire faded out while Ashley watched. We don't know a reason they manifest with pointy ears. Could they do rounded ears? Why do they have a gender? Can they reproduce with each other (It seems to follow that if they can individually reproduce with humans, they can reproduce with each other). Do they always manifest in the same gender? What about when Pandora is the grotesque sprawling chaos creature? Is it female?

I suspect that by default they aren't human at all, but when they take on physical form they can produce bodies that are for all intents and purposes human (they presumably could take on the form of other species, as well). We know Pandora could do rounded ears and even present as male when disguised as an existing human (she impersonated Agent Wolf once, remember); perhaps the pointed ears are to show that they are Immortals to those who know about them (or maybe Immortals just think pointy ears are cool). Of course this theory doesn't explain why Elves are immortal and the children of Elves seem to be more likely to have magical power, but then that gets into the question of how magic is inherited, which I don't think Dan has really gone into.

On the other hand, I have an alternate theory that Immortals are ancient humans (or a closely related species) who become so magically powerful that they became god-like, but it happened so long ago that this fact has been forgotten by Immortal culture and all Immortals we've seen. In this case, Pandora's "Chaos" form would be a transformation brought on by her instability, and her adult human form presumably would be her "true" form.

Be careful with that. Shoveling snow actually claims a lot of lives through heart attacks, and if your snow was wet enough to break your snow blower, it's going to be very exhausting to shovel.

Good advice, but the way you phrase that it sounds like you missed the last line in my post. I was already done with the shoveling when I posted - and the shoveling was in fact quite exhausting.
