I wonder how long it will take Rhoda to convince Diane and Lucy to be themselves? An d it's ironic that Catalina will probably like Lucy better one she stops trying not to be intimidating.
-
If you're referring to her cheeks being red, I think she's actually blushing.
As for the eyeliner & lipstick, those are hard to judge in Dan's style and in grayscale; it could easily be fairly subtle.
-
I wonder if the way AJ actually "sees" his opponent when using his magic; in that case it must take a lot of work to interpret what the spell is saying. Alternately he might be getting a bit more informative feedback and Dan just thought this would be a good visual for it.
Either way, I really like the look of cow-Guy.

Space for spoilers:
I wonder how much Tedd can tell about Sam's magic. I also wonder what Tedd plans on doing with that knowledge. On the one hand he probably can't just keep the knowledge to himself given Sam is dating Sarah who is Tedd's friend; on the other hand if Tedd knows Sam has a sex-change enchantment, sharing that info would be revealing things about Sam that Sam doesn't want shared. I just really hope if Tedd talks to Sam about it, Tedd doesn't say anything offensive (particularly unintentionally); this is a sensitive subject and I could see Tedd jumping in without thinking things through.

Ah, but EGS isn't a slapstick cartoon, it's a transformation comic*. Of course, traditionally the results of pushing the button still would still have been something Diane wasn't happy with, but in comedy one of the greatest traditions is breaking from tradition.
* When it's not a drama, or an urban fantasy, or a gaming webcomic.

Wasn't this part of the reason Diane didn't want to share knowledge of magic? Certainly there's a lot of this reasoning going around (and the reasoning winds up pretty ironic when people one is "protecting" from magic actually know about it anyway).
-
The fact that magic is not public knowledge suggests to even those not in the know about the masquerade that magic is something to keep hidden. And so most people keep their magic secret, and the cycle continues.
(Plus there are the reasons Rhoda thinks about in the next strip.)

So, an awkward conversation is ended, but much is left to be resolved.
Incidentally, Justin, how will anyone who can't hear you know to get to where they can? (I know, he means for them to get to where they can hear him when he's not shouting; it still sounds funny the way he said it.)

That's a lot of character tags for a strip where relatively little happens.
Anyway, I should probably say something meaningful about the comic. I know! "Yay for starburst background & foreground in panel six!" There, perfect.

Early on, yes (in as much as a fictional character, and in particular a fictional character that isn't a murderer or something, can). Though I think that had more to do with bad experiences with my peers back when I was in school than with being a cat.

Space for kinda-sorta spoilers:
I guess Diane isn't the only one with self-image problems. At least Lucy cares about what Rhoda and Catalina think; early on she gave off the impression she didn't like Rhoda (but then, early on Diane seemed like a pretty nasty person herself).
I find it amusing that everyone thinks of Catalina as Rhoda's cat. That said, while she does have many cat-like traits, the way she lets Rhoda be the more dominant one in the relationship isn't very cat-like.

It can be both (particularly when we're talking about the old negative nerd stereotypes), and in this case I think it was supposed to be another "nerd" detail rather than a hint Diane thinks of herself as poor (though I suppose Susan's family does have more money than Diane's).

I don't think so. For one thing the "dorky nerd" look she imagined really doesn't look very good. Secondly, while some minor modifications (such as no tape on the glasses) could make it look good, it still wouldn't suit her personality.

Yay for bubbly background in panel three!
Meow for paw-mittens!
...I strongly suspect Rhoda and Catalina will soon be doing some heavy cuddling at the very least, and if we cut away to another scene and there is no evidence to the contrary, I'm going to assume that they get up to more than just cuddling.

The only sports or other non-video games I've played are ones that I had to in school and ones that my family played together at some point; bowling is neither.
I have seen it enough on TV to get a basic idea how it's played, though. (For that matter, I have played a few bowling mini-games in various video games, though that's obviously not the same as playing it IRL.)
EDIT: It occurs to me that I made it sound like video games are the only thing I've ever been interested in playing, which isn't the case (in fact, I wasn't even able to play video games regularly until I was 6 or 7, when we got a NES). As a kid I played with toys, and played pretend, and I played simple games like Tag or Hide and Seek with my cousins. And I've enjoyed playing cards or board-games with various family members over the years. But bowling just isn't something anybody I know in person does.

So, it turns out my first thought about Grace's reaction was correct. Luckily, Grace was wrong.
I love Jay's reaction, and it's neat that it gave Susan and Jay something to bond over. I was actually pretty suspicious of Jay when she first started showing up, but now thanks to this page I like her; hopefully she doesn't wind up an antagonist in the future!

Space for spoilers (though it's really just a joke I'm spoiling)...
There are many things that growing claws can help with, but I agree that bowling probably isn't one of them. Then again, I've never been bowling, so I can't say for sure.

So my first thought when I saw the final panel was that Grace thought Susan had accidentally deadnamed Jay. However, it's more likely she remembers "Jack" thanks to her dream journal, and just never connected the name to Jay.
I do wonder however what Jay will think of being called Jack (particularly as she doesn't remember telling Susan that name).

I just heard that Akira Toriyama died last Friday, at the age of 68. For those who don't know, he was a manga writer/artist who created several popular series -- most notably Dragonball (which I was a big fan of back in the early 00s). He was also character designer for a number of video games including the Dragon Quest (AKA Dragon Warrior) series, and my favorite game, Chrono Trigger.

I wasn't sure whether to include a tag for Steve, as he's a new character and we already have a few other "Steve"s in the comic. (I guess Dan likes the name.)
My prediction for who we'll see in the next comic: Sarah. While I'm sure she doesn't come to every tournament, it would be a bit disappointing not to have her in this tournament when Hope went through all the effort to meet up with her again.

I wonder if the comic will ever advance far enough for us to see the future Tedd mentions in this strip? It certainly could lead to some fun stories!

They hear you just fine, it's just that most cats can't be bothered to learn non-feline languages.

Yay for swirling dark clouds background in panel one!
I think what Pandora was thinking was that if AJ awakened, he might learn spells that would help him reveal the existence of magic either by pointing out who has magic, or (in a very unlikely outcome) by causing transformations. Of course anyone with magic has the potential to reveal magic if they're not stopped by DGB first, but then it's not like she had to be choosy about who she marked; I suspect Pandora actually wound up marking pretty much everyone she could find that she could give a mark.
