"Norm! Wadda ya say to a little beer?"
"Where've you been all my life?"
"Daddy's home."
"Hello, nice to meet you. We're gonna get together, you and I."

By that notion, Starbucks, with their burnt coffee, must be Hell. Hmm, you're onto something.

4 hours ago, mlooney said:To be fair to Tedd, he's seeing Edward from the rear, while Edward is waving his arms around.
Notably, neither are communicating with each other. Lack of communication is a diplomat fail. Not saying anything might be sending a specific negative message in context, but not communicating is bound to lead to misunderstanding. and Edward's style is charts and exposition, not poignant silence in response to a situation.
This may be rooted in Edward no knowing how to deal with some aspects of Tedd; fear of the wand, apparent lack of magic ability, girliness, . . . in any case, Edward is still Tedd's parent, and needs to get over it and become functional in their relationship.
Hmm, I wonder if Edward's overly negative response to Hope has to do with latent hostility toward Tedd?

Tedd is not on the same wavelength as his dad. They really don't understand each other.
Grace on the other hand is actually gracious, seems to be really bonding with Hope.

Yeah. I live in a hurricane zone, but inland. I'll likely still get some warning, as other suffer.
-
You will have much less warning from now on, due to recent staff and funding cuts.

She was also his personal assistant, although I expect that aspect of their relationship does not carry over to their married life, not if they want it to remain healthy.
5 hours ago, mlooney said:Hmm. He's an endless barrel of exposition without charts. They must add something other than pure data dumping.
I don't think that he performs without charts. He incorporates charts to the degree that you have to wonder where they came from.

7 hours ago, mlooney said:Like I said, “explode” has a technical meaning and “starting to burn really fast” isn't it. The flame front needs to be supersonic for it to be an “explosion”.
Not saying that Lithium-ion batteries don't fail in an energetic way, just it's not technically an explosion.
Lithium batteries in cell phones have caused injuries, technical definition of 'explosion' not withstanding. A big-ass car battery would be expected to cause proportional mayhem if not mitigated. I expect that for marketability, in order to get passable safety ratings, such measures were take. It might be something as simple as putting baffles in to isolate cells. I'm pretty sure Tesla would not spend a few pennies to enhance safety for no reason.

Our economy is such that restaurants transform all the time, although many remain vacant for a long time. With our excellent leadership, I expect this to accelerate. I do not, however attribute this to magic nor sci fi transformer tech.
-
Sound like there is some fire retardant properties built in, which makes sense; high energy batteries default to explosive, I think; especially when column one metals are involved.
-
She could make the coffee . . .
-
On further though about this 'contest', isn't the Tesla battery problematic for the tank? I imagine crushing it releases all the stored energy all at once, explosively; that can't be good.

No excuse! He's had a couple of comics to get his coffee on.
Do transdimensional alien invaders schedule their invasions for your convenience? You've got to be ready for contingencies!
Tedd should cobble together an automated coffee pot that brews him a cup, no fuss. Maybe it could magically detect when he's going to wake up?

So, it seems that Edward is internally reconciling with Pandora.
For a diplomat, he's not a great communicator.

51 minutes ago, Don Edwards said:Other instruments, you have your hands on. You can tell where they are in relation to the instrument, by feel - some combination of what your hands are touching and the positions of your wrists, elbows, and (for extreme cases such as the trombone and piano) shoulders.
The theremin, you pretty much have to actually watch yourself play. An extra sense to incorporate.
Right, less about muscle memory and more about paying attention all the time. Maybe you get a sense of gauging the distance to each note with experience? Still, difficult; it's not like there's a fretted version of the Theremin . . . hmm, note to self . . .
Another limitation worth noting, the Theremin is monotonic as a result of it's design; I don't see how you could make it capable of multitones without incorporation multiple Theremins within the same unit, but that might not be very difficult; could probably be done with one customized chip, especially if the multitone intervals were fixed, a la a guitar tuning. Might even have nobs to set the chord intervals.

She should morph into a mongoose and eat the snake.

I heard a live Theremin in a band concert last night. You have likely heard one before. To hear actual music played on one is . . . different. It was only used in one song (which apparently specified it's use), The Haunted Carousel, by Erika Svanoe, but it played solo at times.
The performer, Ryan Saathoff, was adequate to the song, difficult to say how good he is on the instrument overall. He seemed to hit his desired notes. It does not look easy to play, nor does it seem like you could control it well enough to pass as an instrument to lead a more conventional song session. I've seen a very few other Theremin solos on YouTube, and they seem to reinforce this view.
Listening to this, yes, the Theremin can be used as a musical instrument, but in practice, it is more often a special effects device.

OK, so this is relevant to the current story arc how?
Granted, she could morph into a dragon, devour all the guests, and then go live happily ever after, but I don't think that's where Dan is headed with this story.

So, canonically, this Ellen like girls, so they have an extra shot an hitching up with royalty.
The dragon discussion in the commentary seems irrelevant.

12 hours ago, Amiable Dorsai said:Also? Tedd needs to watch a few Wallace and Gromit episodes and come up with a device that will hand Edward a fresh cup of Coffee as soon as he becomes vertical in the morning.
He can build one for me, too.
As a coffee filter myself, I approve of this.
-
I am sipping my coffee right now. (Explorer, that's 'right meow')
-
I am awarding myself a cookie for stating that Edward needed his coffee.
Grace has an overall good attitude which does not fit her history of early trauma.
We have a sitcom dad thing going here, because Edward should be the voice of reason. It may explain why he's not in a leadership position, but even so, it does not fit with 'he's an excellent diplomat'; he's acting particularly dense.

1 hour ago, Don Edwards said:Genetically, Ashley looks like an Asian/European mix. Such appearances can be deceiving, though.
Culturally she is definitely not Asian. Just look at her name, for starters. "Ashley" as a given name is extremely English - and relatively recent English at that, not getting going until after 1860. So her Asian genetics (if any) have apparently been passed through a few layers of culturally-Americanized ancestors.
In my headcanon her last name is "Lysande", which is Swedish. (Not "Lysander" which apparently is somewhat-Anglicized Italian.)
It is common for Chinese, at least, to adopt Western names for their tenure here, if they are on a green card extended visit. It seems likely that the generation born here would also be named Western names, at least many of them. I deal with name space for a large customer, and can vouch that this is true.
OTOH, Nanase is described as Japanese, but I believe her father has been shown to be a white guy, so Ashley being mixed is not far fetched for EGS. Tedd is also mixed race.

1 hour ago, Amiable Dorsai said:"Jarring" seems to be the point. DS has seldom (never?) shown Bishop in a good light.
Yeah; here entire backstory and current status seem to suggest she may be a capable agent in some sense, but appears to lack certain people skills and adherence to cultural norms. Which is more than can be said for some of today's leadership.

Yeah, a lot to mistrust. If he knew the whole story, he'd know she stood against the Voltaire dragon and did the EGS earth a favor; still folding back to misunderstanding and lack of communication, but more forgivable, difficult to communicate with someone(s) who are both invisible and in another realm.
