Mrs. Prof changed the radio station (which has been playing 24/7 on low volume in the cat quarantine room) from JackFM to Classical. Here's hoping this calms him ("Boots") down somewhat.
  2. The Weather.

Tonight's forecast for my area: Showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1am. Some of the storms could be severe. Low around 63. South wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. Friday Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 7am. High near 72. North wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In other words, maybe a lot of noise and bluster with not a lot of rain. Bleh.

Mrs. Prof's quarantine cat is turning out to be a real talker - as in an all-night talker. As in a "won't shut the fsck up all night long" talker. Incessant "meow meow meow meow meow" coming from the kennel starting at around 9pm and ending ... well, I'm not sure. I eventually crash due to exhaustion from listening to the little bastard. And he's a Jonny One-Note, too. Can't seem to meow at any pitch other than one single frequency. No, that's not fair - he does a pitch bend from a low note up a few steps, but it's the same start and stop notes every time. We'll both be relieved once he's out of here.
  4. Things You Find Amusing

Is there an entry for yourself in that list?
  5. Things That Are Just Annoying

My psychiatrist only accepts checks or cash. For some damned reason, Mrs. Prof ordered a big, huge register-style check binder that weighs a ton. I have to remember to tear off a check before I go in for an appointment, something I regularly forget to do. I usually wind up having to mail in a check after the appointment.
  6. What Are You Listening To?

Here's something rare - a chance to hear yours truly actually perform on an instrument. Way back in 1984, I was part of the mallet percussion ensemble of the Houston Nighthawk Drum & Bugle Corps. Unlike today's massive pit percussion sections where people multitask, we were a 4-person section playing one instrument each, consisting of a vibraphone, a marimba, a xylophone, and a glockenspiel (a.k.a. a set of orchestra bells). What I offer here is an MP3 recording of a section rehearsal from the early part of our tour of the southern United States from 1984. I played the bells in it, which you can hear if you listen to the highest-pitched parts of the ensemble, as well as to the melodic line in most places. A note about the compositions: I wrote the mallet parts for the first piece and contributed to the mallet parts for the second piece. There are two voices on the recording. The first voice you will hear is me, introducing the ensemble and recording the date and location of the recording. I also introduce the last piece we play, using a rather silly voice (I was shouting to the tape recorder from a distance). Please feel free to download and keep a copy of the MP3 as a memento of a drum & bugle corps that died a sad, cruel death. I hope you enjoy the recording as much as I did performing the part. http://www.lbjackson.com/demo/NighthawksMallets1984.mp3
  7. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

I've made it to almost 2pm without the migraine kicking in today. No nausea, no precursor problems, no pain behind the left eye. I'm hoping I've lucked out.
  8. Cats, Dogs, Other pets.

You are a kind-hearted person. Thanks to you and mlooney both.
  9. Cats, Dogs, Other pets.

Very, very much appreciated. Thank you!
  10. Cats, Dogs, Other pets.

I hope I am not violating any TOC by posting this for Mrs. Prof, but she has asked and I have promised. Please delete if not appropriate: please give if otherwise.
  11. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

Thanks, but I didn't cross my fingers hard enough. The migraine kicked back in at about 1:30 p.m. - pain behind one eye, then everywhere. The area behind my left eye still hurts like hell, and it's not my sinuses. I'm on my second rizatriptan now. The first one just knocked me out for a couple of hours. Sound & light hurt. I imagine not as bad as yours, but bad enough to shut me down for periods of time.
  12. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

Well, fortunately the migraines seem to be leaving me alone today. (fingers crossed) I've had a bad nausea event, for which I had to take Zofran, but no occasion to take rizatriptan. I've also had two cups of coffee as a back-up measure. Here's hoping I don't need a third.
  13. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

Is there anything stronger than rizatriptan?
  14. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

I have been on a sine wave of migraines for more than 24 hours now. Have taken a total of 5 doses of rizatriptan. If they don't back off for good tomorrow morning, I'm calling my doctor - he's open for routine visits again.
  15. Cats, Dogs, Other pets.

Mrs. Prof put in a Facebook friend request so that she can follow the chronicles of EtC. I hope you'll grant her access.
  16. The Weather.

    YIKES!
  17. The Weather.

I've witnessed (as in "looked at") a strike on an electric pole that I would estimate was no more than 40 yards away, as the football flies. There was no warning. Just, BAM! Instantaneous light and sound. Enough to tell you to get the fark back inside the building now.
  18. Changing Medications (Level of Trust Required)

Migraine. Big. Persistent. I've taken 3 doses of rizatriptan over the last 24 hours. That's the maximum. It's still not gone. Light hurts. The sound of my laptop's fans hurts. I'm supposed to do a podcast at 6:15pm. That ain't happening.
  19. Things That Are Just Annoying

There's a "loud car" ordinance in our city code. Can't be emitting more than a certain dB level from X feet away (I can't remember the specifics), regardless of the time of day. Got passed mainly because of "boom fests" that would happen at a certain car wash that was next door to a church. On Sunday mornings, no less.
  20. Cats, Dogs, Other pets.

Extremely, møøse bites notwithstanding. The vet tech got bit quite badly, or so I understand. The head of Animal Control came over to inspect our quarantine setup. He approved it, no problems.
  21. Things That Are Just Annoying

I regularly report these idiots to the police Non-Emergency phone number. It's supremely satisfying to see a cruiser show up and catch someone in the act. Once, I saw four units respond - must have been something else going on. Put the fear of Cthulhu in them, though - that address never spawned another complaint.
  22. Cats, Dogs, Other pets.

We have a guest for the next ten days. A feral cat, cared for by someone in Garland, developed an abscess on its face. The caregiver contacted another cat rescue organization not affiliated with Mrs. Prof about getting him to the vet. When the vet tech came out and got the cat, the caregiver neglected to say the cat was feral. So, when the vet tech opened the carrier in the exam room and reached in to get the cat, the cat bit him. We are now quarantining the cat due to Animal Control laws in the State of Texas - the first time this has been done in Garland for a feral cat. Normally, they would be put down. And before anyone asks, no, he has not been neutered and has not been vaccinated for rabies. We're taking care of the cat for the next ten days, at which point he'll hopefully be sterilized, vaccinated, and returned to his home after a bit of care to his abscess. Baker *knows* that there is another cat in the house. He's patrolling the door of the spare room where the cat is located like a military policeman guards a high value target. He's going to be a nervous wreck for the next few days. Loudmouth, on the other hand, could give a shiat.
  23. What Are You Ingesting?

Lunch consisted of frozen panko fried flounder, gussied up a bit with a lemon-ghee sauce on top and tartar sauce on the side. This followed an earlier breakfast of quail, pork, and jalapeno sausage. Many noms have been had this day.
  24. What Are You Listening To?

Since you are my friends, and since I trust you will not spread this beyond the bounds of this forum, I would like to share with you the following: https://leejackson.hearnow.com/derivations A sneak preview of the tracks from my second album, Derivations. They're only brief preview snippets, but they'll give you some idea of what the album is like. I hope you enjoy them. Release date is June 5th, on streaming, digital, Bandcamp (high-res), and if CD Baby's warehouse reopens, on CD.
  25. What Are You Ingesting?

Relaxing with a potent potable. 32oz. Lemon tea, a bottle of Fever-Tree Elderflower Tonic Water, and two shots of Plymouth Gin. Niiiiice.
