  1. What Are You Ingesting?

My birthday is coming up next week, so I went ahead and bought myself a rather outrageous present: a bottle of The Balvenie 12 year old Single Barrel First Fill Speyside single malt whisky. Not cheap by any measure, but it's going to last a good long while. https://www.goodygoody.com/balvenie-12-yr-single-barrel/43992 My last experiments were with Islay single malts and American Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon. I figured that this time I'd go back to my roots (Speyside, where my first high-end taste (The Glenlivet) came from) and try one of the other top tier distillers in the region. It came down to a choice between Glenfiddich and The Balvenie, and I chose the latter, mainly because it was less common than Glenfiddich is, but also because I've tasted a low-end Glenfiddich before and didn't like it. Besides, the reviews on this particular version of The Balvenie were stellar, so choosing it was a no-brainer. I'm having it delivered tomorrow morning. Can't wait to open it up.
  2. Probably every 4 to 6 months, if that often. Hopefully less.
  3. Not as bad as it could suck. If he'd have said that there was no treatment whatsoever, then that would have really sucked. At least now I know what's causing it and what'll have to be done about it.
  4. I had my hematologist appointment today. He came up with a possible reason why I keep getting anemic. If you'll recall, back in December of 2009, I had a Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass performed on me. This kind of procedure bypasses the duodenum, where most of the body's iron is absorbed, according to the doctor. He told me that no amount of oral iron supplements would keep my iron levels where they should be, even if I could tolerate them. The only solution is to receive periodic IV infusions of iron. At this time, I'm waiting for further blood tests to come back, just to verify things. Meanwhile, the doctor is trying to get my insurance to approve me to take a single-dose IV iron replacement called Monoferric as soon as possible. He said a decision on insurance approval should come in about a week.

Cool! How's it working for you? Sorry to hear about your Dr not keeping your appointment.
  6. What Are You Ingesting?

Sorry for the delay - cooking took a lot out of me. The Frikadellen came out really good. I found that I need to cook them 5 1/2 minutes on each side, not just 5 minutes, to get the right combination of crispy char on the outside and doneness on the inside. However, I tried to make a gravy from the pan drippings using chicken broth, and it came out like crap. I had to rescue it with heavy cream and turn it into a cream sauce instead, which turned out okay (and which went pretty well with the Frikadellen). Side dish was Wild Fork frozen Creamed Spinach, which was its usual high quality. I've got plenty of leftovers, as usual. Can't wait to dig into them.
  7. What Are You Ingesting?

I am in the midst of cooking another batch of Frikadellen. So far, the taste tests are coming out very good. I'll have more to report once the dinner is done.
  8. What Are You Ingesting?

Mrs. Prof used the Zojirushi "fuzzy logic" rice cooker to make boxed Zatarain Jambalaya with spiced chicken sausage mixed in. Very good stuff, borderline larrapin'. It needed some shrimp to be truly larrapin', but Mrs. Prof has a shellfish allergy, so no shrimp. Sigh. I really feel sorry for her on that allergy. To not be able to know the taste of a really good piece of crabmeat, submerged in fine garlic butter...it's a shame.

Put the kettle on your Rain Forest Store wish list, if you will. Something nice may come of it.
  10. Sportsball

No, ranked 3rd and 4th. Their losses bumped my Texas Longhorns back up to the 3rd ranking spot.

    It's 10:50 a.m., and OU still sucks!!!

Writing to say I enjoyed the chaos in the AP today, with both Georgia and Miami losing.
  13. Nope, sorry, I bleed too easily, and with my anemia, I need every drop of blood I can spare.
  14. MY LEFT LEG HAS BEEN FARKING ITCHING!!! This is the one that has the really bad edema issues. Well, the edema has been backing off lately, but in its place, its skin has been flaking like mad, and at times like this, it's been itching like crazy. I got Mrs. Prof to get after it with some Green Soap (a mild cleanser) and a prescription moisturizer. It's still itching somewhat, but not quite as bad as it was before Mrs. Prof treated it. I can only hope it gets better.
  15. Things That Are Just Annoying

I have been prescribed by my doctor to take Xyzal, a kissing cousin to Zyrtec, twice a day due to the severity of my allergies and due to my BMI. You might be able to switch to Xyzal and go to 2x a day. (It's basically Zyrtec with a slightly different molecule added. Works better for me.)
  16. Things That Are Just Annoying

I don't post in this thread with good reason very often, but I have a reason this time. I just filled out the medical paperwork needed for my upcoming appointment this Wednesday with the hematologist concerning my anemia diagnosis, and man, was it annoying as all hell. The paperwork was on an online site, and there were around 20 pages or so to fill out. Some of them called for things like the dates of my last immunizations - hell, I had a hard time remembering if I'd been immunized for some of the injections they were talking about, much less what date I got the shots. Like it makes a difference what dates I got the shots, anyway. Jerks.

  18. New Music Release Thread

Continuing my good, steady work on the band arrangement of Bruckner's 2nd Symphony in C Minor. I'm up to measure 258 out of approximately 800 of the 4th movement now. I've clocked in almost 100 measures today alone. Right now, I'm taking a bit of a break to let my mind rest somewhat and to catch up on net ephemera. I'm hoping to hit measure 300 by the end of the day.
  19. Finally! I'm awake. The only problem now is that my pinky finger on my left hand keeps spasming and locking up, thanks to the brush I had with Carpal and Cubital Tunnel Syndromes. Damn them both to hell. My left hand is a pain in the arse nowadays. Good thing I'm right handed.
  20. I still can't stay awake for very long, unless I'm standing up. I find myself waking up before I realize that I've even started to doze off. I have no clue as to what's causing it - it's either the hydromorphone I'm taking, the anemia I've been diagnosed with, or a combination of the two. I don't know. I just wish it'd leave me alone.
  21. What Are You Ingesting?

"Larrapin'" is a phrase that my grandfather used to use to indicate extreme deliciousness. Read back in the thread and you'll see where I introduced it for the first time. I just had some of the leftover Frikadellen with some more Inglehoffer stone ground mustard. Good lord, that's good stuff. Larrapin' beyond belief. I chased it down with some imported Swiss "ruby chocolate" that arrived a couple of days ago. I love that stuff. Om nom nom.
  22. What Are You Ingesting?

Tonight was another cooking session. I made a German meat patty dish called "Frikadellen." They're also known as German meatballs, or German hamburgers. Very simple recipe: ground beef & pork, plus eggs, breadcrumbs, grated onions, minced garlic, and salt & pepper. Pan fry for 5 minutes per side. Larrapin' stuff, especially when served up with Inglehoffer stone-ground mustard (for me). They were universally praised, and will become a staple around Chez Prof. Mrs. Prof said they remind her of a hamburger steak dish her mother used to make for her during her youth, and in a good way. It needs a brown gravy, though, so I'm going to need to research a brown gravy recipe that uses the pan drippings. Shouldn't be hard, but I'm open to suggestions. Send me your best shots.
  23. Political Discussion Thread (READ FIRST POST)

I asked Mrs. Prof if she would be interested in moving to a different country. Note that I did not suggest Canada. A bit later on, I suggested Australia. I'm not 100% sure if we'd be much better off down there, though.
