  1. I'm trying to get a different backup rotation set going on the WD_Black E: drive - a Grandfather/Father/Son rotation. I screwed up my first attempt, so I'm at the tail end of getting attempt number 2 started now. The first backup, a full image of drives C: and D:, is taking up 3037 GB of the 5000 GB on the E: drive, according to the WD_Black's Dashboard software, so it's taking farking forever for R-Drive Image to do the backup and subsequently verify it. It started at 2pm on Halloween, and right now it's 56% of the way through the verify operation (which is going significantly faster than the backup operation did). Today at 2pm, it's supposed to commence the next phase of the GFS rotation, which is one of the Son backups. That'll be an incremental backup, which will be performed daily and kept for 7 days. Somewhere in the 7 day rotation period, a Father backup (in this case, a differential backup) will get done. One per week for 4 weeks will take place, and each will be kept for 4 weeks.

That's if everything goes as it's supposed to go. And don't start talking to me about rotating media or doing offsite this and that - I barely afforded the WD_Black drive. :(

  2. Got a reply from my PCP. He's referring me to another hematologist about my potential anemia. I'm probably going to wind up getting another IV dump of iron.

In other news, the home health nurse will be here in about 15 minutes to do a basic check-up. I don't have much to report, other than I got short of breath carrying one of my cats back from the main bedroom to the kitchen so he wouldn't bug Mrs. Prof (she's still sick). Might be because I did it without my cane - that taxes me a bit more than normal.

  3. Mrs. Prof and I just early-voted. Fortunately, there were no riots of MAGA-cap-wearing dolts who were refusing to remove their caps. All went well. In fact, we got to early-vote early-voting. An election judge approached me and asked about my disability (I had my cane with me), then let Mrs. Prof and me in through a side door to the front of the line so I wouldn't have to stand through the considerably long just-past-5pm line. (The wait would have been quite painful if she hadn't helped.) Thankfully, no one complained.

Oh, as to whom I voted for? It damn sure wasn't Trump/Vance, that's for certain, and I never vote Libertarian or Green party tickets. You do the math.

I generally like German soup mixes.  Tomorrow , when I have money (the 3rd is on a Sunday, I get money early!) I'll get some.

Fill us in on what you get (brand & type), if you would, please. I'm interested, and I've got some hungry mouths over here who get bored easily and are looking for new flavors to explore. Thanks.

  5. Addendum:

Mrs. Prof was still hungry after her bowl of White Asparagus Soup, and she's fighting off an upper respiratory infection, so I offered to make her something else. She requested some of our son's leftover chicken & dumplings. Fortunately, there was just enough left to fill the size of the order she made (large), so I heated it up and brought it back to her.

She has basically had breakfast in bed this morning. Woo hoo.

  6. Had a shipment from a German online store come in a few days ago. Among the items enclosed was something new I wanted to try - White Asparagus Soup, made by Maggi. It comes in a paper/foil packet. You just add the powder contained inside to 500ml (approx. 2 cups) of cold water, then put it over medium heat and bring it to the boil. Once boiling, take it back down to low heat and cook it for 3 minutes. Voila - soup.

I made said soup this morning (which was kind of the evening for me - my schedule is futzed again). Couldn't have been easier, except that I briefly confused the smallish chunks of real white asparagus (!) for lumps in the soup powder. Once past that, it was smooth (pun intended) sailing. The verdict? Larrupin'. No salt or pepper needed for me, although Mrs. Prof wanted a bit of pepper, so I gave her some White Pepper to avoid ruining the aesthetics of the White Asparagus Soup. She definitely enjoyed the hell out of it, which is rare for any of the "experiments" I bring home or order from Amazon or elsewhere. This experiment passed with flying colors for her.

I'm glad I bought 3 packets. That means I've got 2 left, which equates to 4 servings (2 servings per packet). Just right for Mrs. Prof, my son, and me the next time German night rolls around. You see, the main focus of the order from the German online store was more Jager sauce for the schnizel we have in our freezers. Between that, the soup, and some sauerkraut I bought, we're well hooked up for another German night now.

  7. I've got myself started into the 4th movement of Bruckner No. 2, and I've already put the first 100 measures behind me. There's a lot of repetition and blank space in the early going, so it's moving quickly. Regardless, I'm still 1/8th of the way through the movement. Yee haw.

In other news, I really wish you folks would listen to and report back on the earlier movements that I posted above. I say this at the risk of sounding like I'm whining, but I'm at a serious lack for feedback across all of the forums to which I've posted these movements. To date, I've had a total of one bit of feedback posted and one question asked, both on a Facebook Bruckner group. I'm not looking for expert feedback, y'all - just plain old feedback. 'Twould be very much appreciated. Hell, I'm not beyond bribery - if you'd like some of my autographed trading cards, or even a free album of mine from Bandcamp , I'm willing to trade. Just pick your poison, tell me what it is, and I'll do what I can to make it happen.

We are composers. We are desperate.

  8. My son just utilized the Instant Pot to make a most excellent batch of chicken and dumplings. Of particular note was the soup. It was creamy as all get-out. Larrupin', as my grandfather would say. "Put a bowl of it on top of your head, & it'd make your tongue slap your brains out tryin' to get to it."

  9. I finally got some notes back from my primary care physician about the blood tests he ran on me last week. My potassium and kidney panels were great, but my hemoglobin was down, at 11.5 when it should be between 13-17. He asked if I was on an iron supplement, and I had to admit that I stopped taking the one he recommended because it was making me sick and giving me (wait for it...) horrible night sweats! We're talking serious body leakage here, folks. ;) So, I'm waiting for his reply on Monday as to what I should do.

  10. Mrs. Prof came back from the Billy Joel concert in San Antonio yesterday in a somewhat under-the-weather manner. Typical flu-like symptoms, without it necessarily being the flu. Since I had been relying upon her to scan in the pages of the study score of the Bruckner 2nd Symphony, and since she hadn't scanned any of the pages of the 4th Movement yet, *and* since she hadn't shown me her proprietary method for getting such good scans, I spent Saturday and most of today in what one might call an enhanced tizzy, with nothing to do once I'd finished all of my tasks related to the first three movements. At around 4pm she finally got up the strength to come to her computer and show me how to do her scan technique. She got 3 pages in, leaving me to do 21 further pages that she'd cut out of the cheaper study score's binding (I bought two study scores, one for excising/scanning, and one for keeping). I figured I'd be off to the races after that, but off-schedule fatigue set in, and I fell asleep for a couple of hours.

I'm up now, and I'm giving the 4th Movement another listen-through before I get started on doing the arrangement of it for concert band / wind ensemble. It's going to be a grueling task, since the movement runs 21+ minutes long. That translates to 806 measures, by far the longest work I've ever dealt with. Please wish me luck.

  11. I've put the first three movements of Bruckner's Symphony No. 2 in C Minor (WAB 102), arranged by me for concert band / wind ensemble, up on YouTube. Please, please have a listen and let me know what you think. Here are the links:

    1st Movement -

    2nd Movement -

    3rd Movement -

Thank you for putting up with this.

  12. Update:

I've lost 10 lbs. since the Colitis stopped and since I went back on the Bumex diuretic. Here's a brief log of my weight during this ordeal:

    Starting weight (Oct. 10): 320
Weight when I saw doctor (and went to hospital) (Oct 15/16): 304
Weight when I went back onto Bumex (Oct 22): 321
    Current weight (Oct 25): 311

I'm down 10 lbs in just under 3 days, thanks to diuretics, so hell yes I'm staying on the potassium.

  13. I can't seem to stay awake for more than a few minutes at a time tonight. Damned leftover fatigue from the Colitis.  My PCP said this would happen, but why does it have to happen this overwhelmingly? I feel like I'm asleep at the wheel (no relation to the C&W music act) of an 18-wheeler. Bleh.

    Actually, did you know it's not an 18-wheeler? It's a 23-wheeler. It's got 18 rolling, 2 spare, a fifth wheel, steering wheel, and a flywheel. :D

  14. My PCP appointment went well. My potassium level was 4.2, smack dab in the middle of the normal range.

And I just had my first normal poop in a couple of weeks. Huzzah.

I'm still a bit weak/drawn out from the whole ordeal, but the doctor said that's to be expected. I've also decided to switch pre/probiotics to something called Seed. Pardon the spam, but here's the link:

I don't morally censure, I just want the money. Anyway, I'm giving it a try in the place of the Codeage SBO that I was using. This definitely tastes better.

  15. For the first time since Thursday, October 10th, I woke up from a normal sleep today without any noticeable symptoms of Infectious Colitis. No gas, no gurgling, no cramping. Don't know if it's due to the Lomotil I took last night, or if things are truly slowing down. I really hope it's the latter.

Either way, I'm calling my PCP's office on Monday at 8am to set up a follow-up post-ER appointment. Should be fun.

  16. The Problem of the 4TB Drive Backup saga may be reaching a happy conclusion. I'd found a WD_BLACK 4TB P10 drive for around $128.00, right at the outer edge of my budget limit. It was on Newegg, but I didn't want to buy it there, so I checked it out on Amazon first. When I got there, I found a WD_BLACK 5TB P10 that was selling for just $119.00. I snapped it up (good thing - they're sold out now) and should receive it later this week.

So, good timing gets me a drive that will back up both of my NVMe drives in my laptop onto a single device, not onto two devices like I was prepared to do. Joy anticipated. Good thing, too, 'cause I can use it after recent events. :P
