  1. Well, I was wondering about how much time had passed. Without putting an exact number on the clock, I think we can safely say that the time since the mall incident has been significant.

Depending on the nature of the "Business" to which Edward was attending, a potential family crisis may have been a convenient excuse to leave early.

And yet again, the Veres family manages to skirt the underlying issues by a bigger distraction.  I suppose that exploding aberrations and "Fate-of-Magic" debates may be a more immediate issue.  But someday Tedd and Edward really need to discuss what it is to be a seer, Noriko, and gender identity. They really do respect and care for each other, but the topics had been so awkward and uncomfortable to address for so long that the silence has become a habit.

  2. May 23

230 – Death of Pope Urban I of the Catholic Church.  He was best known for his role in the Aesop Fable "The Urban Pope and the Rural Pope".

1430 – Joan of Arc is captured by the Burgundians while leading an army to raise the Siege of Compiegne.  I am certain a devout young woman with deeply held convictions will be treated fairly by her captors and rescued by her allies.

1568 – Dutch rebels led by Louis of Nassau, defeat Jean de Ligne, Duke of Arenberg, and his loyalist troops in the Battle of Heiligerlee, opening the Eighty Years' War.  How do they know the fighting will last 80 years?

1618 – The Second Defenestration of Prague precipitates the Thirty Years' War.  I suppose after everyone accepted the 80 Year name, they were pretty confident about naming this one 30 Years.

1701 – After being convicted of piracy and of murdering William Moore, Captain William Kidd is hanged in London.  The courts ignore his plea of "I was just Kidding!"

1824 – Birth of Ambrose Burnside, American general and politician, 30th Governor of Rhode Island.  He was not a great commander for the Army, but no military officer ever had better facial hair.

1829 – Accordion patent granted to Cyrill Demian in Vienna, Austrian Empire.  How did this legendary musical city not anticipate the suffering that would follow?

1873 – The Canadian Parliament establishes the North-West Mounted Police, the forerunner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police...

I never wanted to write historical commentary.

I always wanted to be  A LUMBERJACK!

    █████ I'm OK

    ██Wildflowers ███ Nobody Expects The ██ Llamas!

    Ok, where was I?

1911 – The New York Public Library is dedicated.  Please ignore the rumors that it may be haunted.

  3. But this does confirm that Arthur is actually reading the Agency files on at least some of the Maine Eight.

I wonder how much time has passed since they were at the werehouse?

And are they at the regional FBI headquarters or an "undisclosed location"?

  4. May 22

853 – A Byzantine fleet sacks and destroys undefended Damietta in Egypt.  Most powerful empire of its day and the best it can do is sack an undefended port?

1176 – The Hashshashin (Assassins) attempt to assassinate Saladin near Aleppo.  Most feared hired killers in history and the best they can do is attempt to kill someone in the middle of a war?

1200 – King John of England and King Philip II of France sign the Treaty of Le Goulet.   In other words, intermission.

1246 – Henry Raspe is elected anti-king of the Kingdom of Germany in opposition to Conrad IV.  If the King and the Anti-King ever come into contact, they would annihilate each other and most of the surrounding feudal state.

1570 – The first atlas, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, is published with 70 maps.   And not one of them had directions to the next Standard Oil gas station.

1762 – Sweden and Prussia sign the Treaty of Hamburg.  Hold the onions.

1819 – SS Savannah leaves port at Savannah, Georgia, United States, on a voyage to become the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean.  In 1933, Congress would designate the anniversary as National Maritime Day because we need another holiday celebrating business.

1849 – Future U.S. President Abraham Lincoln is issued a patent for an invention to lift boats, making him the only U.S. President to ever hold a patent.  It seems anyone can get a patent.

1856 – Congressman Preston Brooks of South Carolina severely beats Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts with a cane in the hall of the United States Senate for a speech Sumner had made regarding Southerners and slavery.  To me, this seems like a more honest version of politics.

1906 – The Wright brothers are granted U.S. patent number 821,393 for their "Flying-Machine".  As I said, anyone can get a patent.

1990 – North and South Yemen are unified to create the Republic of Yemen.  No one better try this with North and South Dakota.

1998 – A U.S. federal judge rules that U.S. Secret Service agents can be compelled to testify before a grand jury concerning the Lewinsky scandal involving President Bill Clinton.  And thus the modern Praetorian Guard can add Character Assassination to their available weapons and tactics.

2009 – BBC Radio 6 organizes the first World Goth Day.  Strangely, Rome remains unsacked.

  5. May 21

1554 – Queen Mary I grants a royal charter to Derby School, as a grammar school for boys in Derby, England.  She likes the hats.

1659 – In the Concert of The Hague, the Dutch Republic, the Commonwealth of England and the Kingdom of France set out their views on how the Second Northern War should end.  You know that things are bad in Scandinavia when they need advice from England and France about how to STOP a war.

1904 – The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is founded in Paris.  With a recognized governing body in place, there should be no more soccer related controversy or violence.  Ever.

1927 – Charles Lindbergh touches down at Le Bourget Field in Paris, completing the world's first solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean.

1932 – Bad weather forces Amelia Earhart to land in a pasture in Derry, Northern Ireland, and she thereby becomes the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.  Lindy lands at an airport in Paris.  Earhart is forced down in an Irish Pasture.  There a lesson in there about the treatment of genders in aviation.

1936 – Sada Abe is arrested after wandering the streets of Tokyo for days with her dead lover's severed genitals in her handbag. Her story soon becomes one of Japan's most notorious scandals.  Eighty two years later, this story would still be a notable scandal in almost any country today.

1952 – I pity the fool who doesn't know Mr. T was born on this day.

1992 – After 30 seasons, Johnny Carson hosted his penultimate episode of The Tonight Show featuring guests Robin Williams and Bette Midler.  It was episodes like this that made Johnny worth every penny of his obscenely large salary from NBC.

2011 – Radio broadcaster Harold Camping predicted that the world would end on this date.  He was wrong.  Just like every other prediction about the end of the world so far.  I believe there may be a pattern...

  6. Cauliflower, carrot, and green pepper?

I've seen pickled giardiniera (or sottaceti or "hot mix") on Italian Beef sandwiches.

I suppose it was inevitable that it would eventually make its way on to pizza.

One of the greatest, and most disturbing, aspects that accompanies the right of free expression is the ability to put ANYTHING on pizza.

Having said that, just because giardiniera MIGHT show up on an Italian Beef sandwich, that is no reason for the seller to assume that the customer expects that the vinegar salad would be part of an Italian Beef Pizza.

And now, I want an Italian Beef sandwich.  I'm going to the "Chicago Style" pizzeria down the street.

  7. Considering how effective the "Sleep" type spells seem to be in EGS, I really wonder why the Magus types even bother with the flashy fighting magic.

Now how long will it take Arthur to realize that the three humans he just knocked out are not the bad guys?
It will probably go better for them if Kevin doesn't say anything at this point...
But who am I kidding?  A Federal case involving a paranormal threat?  This is exactly the place Kevin can make life more difficult for everyone.

  8. While watching the royal wedding (replay on Ewe Toob) I was struck by a premonition.

At some point in the next year, that is, before the end of May 2019, Meghan the Duchess of Sussex will come to the United States and hit the media circuit hard.

She will be promoting a Charitable cause, although it will really be more of a book tour.  Her book may be largely ghost written.

One of the more thoughtful scenes in this tour will be when she appears on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah where they will have a carefully scripted conversation about what it is to be Mixed-Race in the United States and the British Commonwealth.

At least one talk show appearance will be interrupted when Howie Mandel makes a "Surprise" visit.

She will appear on Sesame Street.  In at least one segment, she will appear with The Count in her role as The Countess of Dumbarton.

  9. May 19

715 – Pope Gregory II is elected.  He will eventually claim the Vatican Attic (the Vattic?) as his personal living space after a long argument with Sister Marcia.

1445 – John II of Castile defeats the Infantes of Aragon at the First Battle of Olmedo.  Does a military victory really rate a note in history when your opponents are babies?

1536 – Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII of England, is beheaded for adultery, treason, and incest.  The amazing thing is that other women would agree to marry Mr VIII again, and again, and again...

1743 – Jean-Pierre Christin developed the centigrade temperature scale.  He had the brilliant idea of taking the scale developed by Anders Celsius and turning the numbers around so that higher numbers would represent hotter temperatures.

1749 – King George II of Great Britain grants the Ohio Company a charter of land around the forks of the Ohio River.  The spoons of the Ohio River had mysteriously disappeared by this time, leaving North America with unmatched cutlery.

1962 – A birthday salute to U.S. President John F. Kennedy takes place at Madison Square Garden, New York City. The highlight is Marilyn Monroe's rendition of "Happy Birthday".  Who cares if his birthday wasn't actually for another ten days?

  10. VWM?
    What the VWM went VWM?
Was that one of the previously mentioned magic doors opening up in the vicinity of our heroes?

And on a tangent, has this been Elliot's most awkward date yet?
Or was the time he asked Sarah to watch his martial arts practice still worse?

When and why did Susan start working for Mr. Tensaided?

It is often difficult for a Teen to find a job, regardless of what the overall employment situation is like.  There was probably some criteria that Susan used to tell her this Man was at least "tolerable" before she submitted her application.  Perhaps it was as simple as seeing her mother and Mr Tensaided behave cordially towards each other.

What speaks volumes is that, after she had been there for some time, Susan decided to stay and Mr Tensaided chose to promote her.

  12. Magus has two priorities ahead of dealing with Ellen at this point.

    1.  Stay ahead of the Government agents long enough to

    2.  Get back to his native reality.

The big variable in all this is the means and timing of the return trip for Magus.

Magus knows where Ellen lives.  The only problem is that the Government also knows where Ellen lives  And as soon as awkward Elliot speaks to a responder, the Government will also know that Magus wants to contact Ellen before he leaves this reality.  Do you think Ellen can deal with being tailed by a Federal agent 24/7 for an unspecified period?

Maybe the government will assign an undercover platypus to keep an eye on her?

  13. Declaring a person dead...?

Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn't seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps, "My friend is dead! What can I do?" The operator says, "Calm down. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence; then a gun shot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says, "OK, now what?"

The World's Funniest Joke, according to Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World's_funniest_joke

  14. Shouldn't Elliot or Ellen have picked up a phone by now and called Edward Verres?

"Mr Verres?  It's Elliot/Ellen Dunkle.  Hey, we're at that warehouse where your agency held the Dewitchery Diamond.  You know the one with all the supposedly useless artifacts?"

    ...

"It's a long story and we'll be glad to tell you everything when you get here.  But for right now?  Two things.  First, the supposedly useless artifacts are suddenly not useless.  And second, we are in a fight and not doing well."

    ...

"We aren't fighting the Security Guard.  There aren't any warehouse employees here at all."

  15. There are a lot of authors and artists playing around with a relatively small quantity of characters.  It is not surprising that the comic publishers, to resolve contradictions and inconsistencies, will at various times make this sort of announcement.  "Everything that was published before THIS point no longer exists.  Despite what you may think you remember from our old comics, cartoons, and movies, THIS is now our real history."

907 – Zhu Wen forces Emperor Ai into abdicating, ending the Tang dynasty after nearly three hundred years of rule.  Although to be fair, 300 year old Tang wouldn't be served to Astronauts on even the most severe NASA budget cuts.

1689 – King William's War: William III of England joins the League of Augsburg starting a war with France.  Did England and France really need that much pretext to start a war?

1820 – Birth of Florence Nightingale.  She would become notorious for spreading the radical idea that the sick and injured would have a better recovery in clean and comfortable surroundings.  By coincidence, she was born on what would become International Nurses Day.

1846 – The Donner Party of pioneers departs Independence, Missouri for California.  It is difficult to make a comment about this in good taste.

1937 – Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Westminster Abbey.  At just over six months since his ascension, this was one of the more rapidly occurring British coronations in several hundred years.  It was as if Westminster had been preparing a coronation for someone else and just needed to change the names on the Arch Bishop's cue cards.

1941 – Konrad Zuse presents the Z3, the world's first working programmable, fully automatic computer, in Berlin.  Was there any advantage (technological, military, economic, moral, or social)  that the German Government did not waste in WWII?

1310 – Philip IV of France has fifty-four members of the Knights Templar burned at the stake, ostensibly for heresy.  Certainly not because France was heavily indebted to the Templars.
