  1. I was thinking in terms of Life Peerage type Lordships, as are granted by the modern British government. The Mage-ruled side of the EGS world seems to be willing to grant noble status to any sufficiently powerful Mage who is willing to swear fealty to the reigning Queen or King, but it is kind of implied that this is a status granted to the individual rather than their bloodline—any descendants would have to prove their own worth, and a child with no potential to become a Mage would not inherit a title.

Anyway, I would think that if Liam Tyrant-Slayer had a more specific title (e.g. Count or Baron), then it would have been stated, which is why I speculated that he has some sort of Peerage-at-large (i.e. he has the rank and a substantial salary/stipend, but no specific landed estate tied to his title of nobility as opposed to private holdings).

Liam more or less said this, in that he's as high a rank as possible for a griffin. I would assume from his actions that he's supporting the underground as much as he can.

IIRC, Liam is basically a Captain of the Royal Guard? (Or whatever you call a high-ranking Royal Guardsman who is not a General. Would they use Colonels?) Dwight addresses him as “Lord”, which implies a rank of Nobility higher than Knight but probably lesser than Baron.

Absolutely agreed. But it is all situational. The point isn't which is better, a sniper rifle or a minigun. The point is what kind of action they are preparing for.

If the goal is targeted assassination, then the sniper rifle would be preferred. If the goal is a massacre (i.e. high body count in a target-rich environment, such as a gathering of Mages), then the minigun or machinegun is warranted.

However, if our rebels are not planning on raiding military stores and instead want to  keep to the civilian or black market, then a 1919 Browning .30-06 machinegun or civilian semiautomatic rifle such as the infamous AR-15 would be a more practical choice than a rotary gun.

  4. Tech makes sense for what they want to take back because most of the things that we know that the EGS side has that the other side does not are either tech or the products of tech. Non-magical (and thus harder-to-trace) telecommunications, computers, high-tech materials such as ballistic or ceramic armor, or weapons would all seem valuable to a rebel faction.

It's possible that they meant on the their side of the coin.  They know that "magical royalty" here doesn't rule as such.

Given that we know that Uryuoms are restricted from high technology on their side, their goal may be to acquire tech that would aid them in overthrowing the Royal Mageocracy. Watch out for them trying to acquire nuclear weapons.

As for Magical Royalty ruling here, since First World nations are all either Republics or have only token monarchies (British Commonwealth, or any other present European monarchies), the Mages do not hold the public leadership positions, but if DGB is any indication, they do pull strings from the shadows.

  6. All of this talk of buying businesses or other investments overlooks the main reason that this trio had chosen gold as their portable store of value: They come from a place whose fiat currency is unrecognized by any authority on this planet, and which is therefore unexchangeable. Thus, they must carry their money in the form of saleable material.

  7. This may not be the first time that they have sold off some gold, merely their first visit to this particular dealer. Making multiple small deals of several thousand dollars each would attract less attention than trying to unload a quarter million dollars in gold all at once.

  8. When dealing with a society which uses fiat currency, and with which your society has no formal relations, it is quite sensible to carry some mundane-but-valuable material such as gold to convert into their currency. Despite inflation, the value of one Troy ounce of gold has tended to hover around one week’s income for a middle-class household ever since currency was invented.

Also I'm curious as to why this arc is names "Layers".  Of course it's only 3 strips in, so it may become obvious later.  Plus I suspect this is going to be a longer arc as it's already labeled "Part 1"

So Grace is like an ogre?

  10. “Sick” as slang definitely dates from the period when Dan was a teenager.

As for the cleric wanting Nanase to read the glyphs, he probably only knows that she and the glyphs are from the same other world. He is only speculating that she would be familiar with the particular script/language.
