      Welcome!   03/05/2016

Welcome, everyone, to the new 910CMX Community Forums. I'm still working on getting them running, so things may change.  If you're a 910 Comic creator and need your forum recreated, let me know and I'll get on it right away.  I'll do my best to make this new place as fun as the last one!

Nobody has given Justin one yet because nobody except Pandora knows he's awakened and she mostly isn't being that obvious. (HE doesn't know he's awakened - if Pandora gave him a spellbook, he would know.) So he's currently in the clear regarding keeping up with changes to his spellbook.

She also might have given him a book (hiding it amongst his other belongings) and didn't let him know (which would so be like her if she did).

I can definitely see her doing that.  Somewhere on Justin's shelves, he will one day find a phone book, or Memoirs of the Great Accountants, or a Twilight book, and pick it up only because he doesn't remember ever seeing it before....

You know, the "search constantly for hidden updates" thing would explain how spellcasters of legend could be constantly reading in an economy where they couldn't afford a lot of books...

Now that's an interesting observation!  And changes in wording might be the real reason why D&D magic-users have to read their spellbooks every day -- maybe magic there is like Stile's magic in Phaze, where he can never use the exact same spell twice, but he can rephrase things to get the same effect, and the magic-user's spell book has a really good thesaurus.

Justin wasn't around when Edward was waving around with the awakening detection wand. Apparently, sharing information or not, it didn't occurred to him that if he's not sure, he should simply let Edward test him.

He may not even be aware that there is a simple, painless (except to the ears) way to test for magic ability.  I think it most likely, however, that his conversation with Luke is a true reflection of what he believes -- he's had no reason to think he has any magic beyond the ASMA training (I do assume the group talks to each other enough for him to have at least found out that's magic) until Luke brought up the possibility, and they proceeded to disprove his claim about Justin being Marked.  Now that the possibility has been brought up, Justin might have enough doubts to ask his friends about it, at which point I'll be disappointed if no one thinks of asking Mr. Verres.

  2. Would there be any interest in starting up an online game of what I have heard described as "Werewolf," "Ultimate Werewolf," or "I Am Not A Werewolf"?

Basically, it's a game about lying your butt off and/or trying to figure out who else is lying their butt off.

In the most basic version, the players are divided into Villagers, Werewolves, and a Seer.  The werewolves know who each other are, and once every night they get to pick one player to devour.  During the day, they try very hard to act like a normal villager and not give away that they are a werewolf.  The villagers spend the day talking, and trying to figure out who among them is a werewolf.  If enough villagers think that someone is a werewolf, they can vote to lynch that person (maximum one lynching per day), at which point they find out whether they were right.  The villagers win if they find and kill all the werewolves, and the werewolves win if they equal or outnumber the villagers.

The Seer is on the side of the Villagers, and every night they get to check one person to find out if they are a werewolf.  This naturally means that the werewolves would really like to know who the Seer is, and if they figure it out they will likely devour them.  The Seer therefore has to try to steer the rest of the group's decisions without actually revealing that they are the Seer and know for a fact that they are about to, say, lynch an innocent villager, or that they really should vote to lynch a particular person.

I've played this game a great deal in person and it can be a blast!  The only problem I can foresee is that all of the discussion is really supposed to be within the group as a whole, so we'd have to all agree not to send PMs to anyone except the game moderator about the game, or to discuss the game in private in any other format.  There are a bunch of other roles/characters that can be brought in if people enjoy the first game or two....

So, is there any interest in trying this?  Or should we wait until the first EGS Convention to play in person? ;-)

A word of warning, if I'm moderating this, there may occasionally be times I can't reply right away, so you'lll have to have a little patience.

Just finished the first season of The Expanse. It's a little cliffhangery, and unfortunately by splitting the first book in half (Leviathan Wakes), a lot of the really cool stuff is gonna get shunted to the second season, which thankfully has already begun production. But in all, it's probably the best sci fi on television right now so I can't complain.

Hmm, I think that book was among the packet of Hugo nominees I got for Chicon 7, but I don't remember whether I got through it.  I think it just didn't draw me in enough given how much I had to read through (I wound up not voting on the novels that year).

If you don't remember me, it's probably because (I'm pretty sure) this is one of several sites where I was using the screen name "Warrl". I decided this is a good time to change it.

Perhaps we need a consolidated place to list all the nickname changes?

    6 hours ago, exterminator said:

Maybe you knew already, but you can change your screen name if you go to Account Settings (in you name in the web head) up to three times a month, so no one's stuck with any screen name here. I don't know if this was possible in the old forums, though, but the more you know...

I discovered that when I made a typo on my initial registration.  Personally, I hope people don't change nicks often, too confusing.

Very strange seeing you without your pundit hat (aka moderator title). Hope you can handle being one of us until that's been remedied. ;)

Kidding aside, I can't wait till we can get all the sub forums remade for Story, NP, Sketchbook and such, before this gets too cluttered.

I kinda liked having Story and NP in the same place, as long as we had the little red tags on Story posts to distinguish them from NP ones.  However, I concede that if Dan ever starts doing Sketchbook posts with any sort of frequency again, things would get a bit cluttered.

Thank you for keeping your picture the same!  I'm going to have to find mine, I know it's around here somewhere....

I'm back and Robin has kindly returned me to moderator status. I will have to reconstruct the FAQ and courtesy rules from the ground up, I suspect, but at least that means I will get to get all the rules we have now in one single easy to read post.

Congrats on getting your rank back!  We look forward to the return of the courtesy rules, and the inevitable tweaks they'll need as people misbehave.  We are once again in good hands!

Hey there. My name is Zee, I write fanfic (all on AO3) and I just got approved on the last version of this site before it died. Looking forward to good stuff on this incarnation.

Welcome, Zee!  TOH, since we don't currently have a Newbie Intro section, should we do an intro thread in Off-Topic, or will we be getting a new intro section?

Until and unless all the previous posts come back, we defiantly lost more than we gained. The forum software doesn't matter nearly as much as the content it contains.

Robin is working on it. Some of the material may be recoverable. Give him time.

Venting a bit is natural, but I don't think anyone means to complain about Robin, or Ben or Thom.  We all know they're doing everything they can, and if/when they need help many of us will be happy to contribute!  I'm just glad they were able to restart the forums and give us a place to hang out together again!

BTW, I see you got your definite article back! :-)

  6. I don't think we know yet how much of the old data might still be recovered.  I made a plea for them to please at least set up something so we could carry on, and not wait for the data recovery attempts' conclusion.  If they can get a bunch of stuff back, they'll probably either set it up as an archive or try to merge it all together, no idea which.

My girlfriend got me into Dr Who last year...and the only way I had of watching it was Netflix. This was also the only thing I got Netflix for as well. Now I get to cancel Netflix...but I don't get to watch Dr Who anymore. :/ Bit of a mixed feeling, there.

Yeah, I was disappointed when Doctor Who left the streamers, too.  I've been told you can watch some of the episodes on the BBC America website, but I haven't really tried it out yet.  Guessing we should revive the Watching thread if we continue this....

I had bought four Big Finish Doctor Who stories at Chicago TARDIS last Nov, and got through two and a half of them over all my holiday driving, but I felt more like catching up on podcasts than re-starting the third story on this trip.  Started with the show about the Christmas episode and worked my way forward, but I think I'll go catch up with Radio Free Skaro and then alternate in broadcast order on the way back tomorrow. :-)

Does that make it any clearer?  I was seeing it as a play off of "saving for a downpayment," hence my phrasing as "You'll pay for that!"  I dunno, maybe I was seeing a pun-ish wordplay where none was intended?

  9. Verity!, an all-women Doctor Who podcast (named in honor of the original producer of the show).  They've decided on a theme of Firsts for this year, and thus are reviewing both first episodes, old series and new.  It's great hearing the breadth of perspectives on "Rose" and what everyone thought of the idea of a revival of the series at the time.  The sort-of-companion-podcast Radio Free Skaro (which is all guys) often makes for a good contrast to this one, but I haven't caught up yet to learn what the boys have planned for the season off.

One of my favorite review quotes ever came from a Verity! episode, describing Clara's influence on the Doctor.  Something along the lines of, "Donna showed how sometimes, the Doctor needs someone to tell him when to stop.  Clara has taken the brakes off and is going WHEEEEE!!!!"

Cool!  Naturally I knew contrecoup, it's a pretty well-known medical phenomena, but limerence is new and expresses a concept I didn't know a good word for before!  May I ask what you were quoting there?

I was wondering how many we might have like that!  Hopefully the archive will be at least mostly recovered....

Hmm, that's interesting, it just broke up my "recovered" at the end of a line.  Got the hyphen in the right place, at least!

  12. Hooray!  Welcome back, everyone!

This thread is a bit akin to the Newbie Intro section, except it's for everyone to post when they see the forums are back, to let everyone know you're here and give any news you feel like sharing since the crash.  :-)

I'm pretty much status quo, except for missing all you guys a lot more than I would have expected.  Facebook just isn't the same, is it?

ETA: Hmm, I seem to be missing an "r" as well, I'll have to go fix that....and I put this here before the Off-Topic section came back; TOH, if you want to move this thread over there, feel free!
